Guidance is much needed on the design of high strength steel reinforced concrete (SRC) columns beyond the remit of Eurocode 4. Given the much narrower range of permitted concrete and steel material strengths in comparison to EC2 and EC3, and the better ductility and buckling resistance of SRC columns compared to steel or reinforced concrete, there is a clear need for design beyond the guidelines. This book looks at the design of SRC columns using high strength concrete, high strength structural steel and high strength reinforcing steel materials – columns with concrete cylinder strength up to 90 N/mm2, yield strength of structural steel up to 690 N/mm2 and yield strength of reinforcing steel up to 600 N/mm2 respectively. The companion volume provides detailed worked examples on use of these high strength materials. This book is written primarily for structural engineers and designers who are familiar with basic EC4 design, and should also be useful to civil engineering undergraduate and graduate students who are studying composite steel concrete design and construction. Equations for design resistances are presented clearly so that they can be easily programmed into design spreadsheets for ease of use.

Noël Challamel is Professor in Civil Engineering at UBS, University of South Brittany in France and chairman of the EMI-ASCE Stability committee. His contributions mainly concern the dynamics, stability and inelastic behavior of structural components, with special emphasis on Continuum Damage Mechanics (more than 70 publications in International peer-reviewed journals). Charles Casandjian was formerly Associate Professor at INSA (French National Institute of Applied Sciences), Rennes, France and the chairman of the course on reinforced concrete design. He has published work on the mechanics of concrete and is also involved in creating a web experience for teaching reinforced concrete design – BA-CORTEX. The enhancement of A1035 is achieved by the modification of the composition and microstructure of the steel. Therefore, the behavior of concrete structures reinforced with high-performance steel (A1035) is different from those reinforced with the regular steel (A615). Concrete bridge decks reinforced with different amounts of A1035 were studied in this research program. The structural behavior of twelve concrete bridge decks reinforced with A615 Grade 420 (60 ksi) and A1035 Grade 830 (120 ksi) steel was investigated at both service and strength limit states. The tensile strain of steel and compressive strain of the concrete were measured in each load step. In addition to measuring the deflection, a microscope was used to measure the maximum crack width during testing. Then, the finite element method was used to model the concrete bridge decks. ABAQUS software was used to represent the model. The concrete material was represented by C3D8 elements, and the steel material was modeled by T3D2 elements. Concrete Damaged Plasticity Model was used to represent the nonlinear behavior of concrete. The plastic behavior of the reinforcing steel was represented by Plasticity option. The final part of the dissertation focuses on investigating the structural behavior of concrete beams reinforced with A1035 and cast with different concrete strengths. The structural behavior of eight reinforced concrete beams was investigated. Two types of reinforcement were used, regular steel (A615) and high-performance steel (A1035). Three different concrete strengths were used, normal, high, and ultra-high strength. The deflection, maximum crack width, compressive strain of concrete, and tensile strain of steel were measured during testing.

Particular attention is given to the proposed design method of limited ductile high-strength reinforced concrete columns. Analytical studies on normal- and high-strength reinforced concrete beams and experimental research on high-strength reinforced concrete columns are conducted and discussed. To investigate the post-peak behaviour and flexural ductility performance of reinforced concrete beams and columns, the author proposes a new method of rigorous nonlinear moment-curvature analysis that incorporates the strain history effect of tension steel. The moment-curvature curves derived using the new method resemble more closely the actual post-peak behaviour of reinforced concrete members compared to their conventionally-derived counterparts. The results enable the author to derive: (1) a theoretical equation that correlates the curvature ductility factor of reinforced concrete beams to various structural parameters; (2) two sets of design ultimate concrete strains suitable for use with either the proposed equivalent rectangular concrete stress block or the equivalent rectangular stress block of BS 8110; and (3) a series of design charts that facilitates the concurrent design of flexural strength and ductility of reinforced concrete beams. A new parametric study using the proposed analysis method is also conducted to refine the author's previously-proposed equation on transverse steel content of limited ductile high-strength reinforced concrete columns. A series of high-strength reinforced concrete columns containing transverse reinforcement calculated in accordance with this refined equation are tested under compressive axial load and reversed cyclic inelastic displacements to assess its adequacy. These columns prove capable of achieving a curvature ductility factor close to 10, which is the commonly-accepted measure for limited ductile structures. They are subsequently compared with another series of columns containing transverse steel calculated in accordance with the shear requirement of BS 8110. The performance of the latter series is shown to be much worse than the former in terms of flexural strength and ductility. The influence of transverse steel configuration is investigated on some test specimens selected from these two series of columns. In addition, three column specimens are tested to investigate the effect of tension steel lap splice. The test results indicate that the lap splice should be located further away from the potential plastic hinge region. The author also proposes a rational evaluation of plastic hinge length, which could hitherto only be assessed empirically during experimental tests, using various methods that can be grouped into direct and indirect methods. The results are compared with the experimental data obtained from the majority of the column test specimens and with the experimental data obtained by other researchers, and they match closely. Book excerpt: Test results are presented from an experimental program carried at the University of Texas at Austin aimed at evaluating the seismic performance of concrete columns reinforced with high-strength steel. Comparisons are made between the performance of columns reinforced with conventional Grade 60 steel, and the higher Grade 80. The high-strength steel used in this study is the result of a recent push in the U.S. to produce higher grade reinforcing bars with relatively high ductility. All steel used satisfied the specifications of ASTM A706. Column specimens were tested under constant axial load and reverse cyclic lateral loading until collapse. Columns performed in a similar manner, indicating that current limits on the yield strength of reinforcing bars in seismic applications could be raised to include Grade 80 A706 bars. Conclusions are drawn with respect to the effects of higher strength reinforcement on, member cracking, drift capacity, plasticity spread, plastic hinge performance, and strain demands on reinforcing bars.

Book excerpt: Corrosion of steel reinforcement has been identified as one of the major problems facing many existing reinforced concrete structures including bridges. The exposure to aggressive environmental conditions such as those with high concentrations of chloride ions due to the use of de-icing salt in cold regions or high concentrations of carbon dioxide due to increased greenhouse gas emissions, accelerate the initiation process of corrosion. As corrosion initiates, the structural performance in terms of load-carrying capacity, ductility, and service life deteriorate over time. Coupling the effect of reinforcement corrosion with service loads may further weaken the structural performance of reinforced concrete bridges due to the presence of transverse load-induced cracks. Accordingly, a research program was conducted to evaluate the structural performance of reinforced concrete beams subjected to coupled effects of service loads and reinforcement corrosion. The research project consisted of combined experimental and numerical investigations. The experimental phase consisted of tests of nine small-scale beams and six large-scale beams. The beams were designed, constructed, instrumented, and loaded under a four-point load test. The primary test variables were the applied corrosion current density, level of corrosion, and level of sustained loading as percentage of beam ultimate capacity (0% Pu, 40% Pu, and 60% Pu). The corrosion level of steel reinforcement was quantitatively assessed using gravimetric weight measurements and three-dimensional laser scanner technique. Test results indicated that failure of corroded RC beams was brittle due to premature rupture of corroded steel bars, which was attributed to the development of localized corrosion at the sections with flexural cracks in beams. Furthermore, it was found that beams subjected to higher levels of service loads, experienced further reductions in ultimate load capacity and ductility. In addition, tensile tests were used to evaluate the effect of corrosion on the mechanical performance of steel bars retrieved from the corroded beams. It was found that the tensile strength of corroded steel bars, based on nominal sectional area, was reduced with the increase of corrosion levels. In contrast, the tensile strength, based on minimum sectional area, was not influenced by the non-uniform distribution and localization of corrosion. In fact, there was a slight increase in strength with the increase of corrosion levels. The numerical phase consisted of finite element analyses of beams using DIANA FE analysis software. A simplified approach was implemented to introduce the damage induced by corrosion into two-dimensional nonlinear FE models, based on the experimental testing of corroded beams and corroded steel bars. The analyses were reasonably accurate in predicting cracking patterns, residual load capacity, residual ductility, and failure modes of corroded beams. Subsequently, the validated model was used to conduct a parametric study on the level of service loads, level of corrosion, strength of concrete, and tensile reinforcement ratio. It was found that the FE model of corroded beams was strongly influenced by the level of service loads, level of corrosion, and tensile reinforcement ratio.
