Download or read book Crystallization of Polymers written by Marcel Dosière and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery that polymer single crystals are composed of chain folded macromolecules in 1957, the crystallization of polymers has attracted considerable interest and still provides fascinating and fruitful areas of research. Only a few books have been fully devoted to the crystallization of polymers in the past. This book contains the proceedings of the NATO ARW devoted to the `Crystallization of Polymers' which took place in September 1992 at the University of Mons-Hainaut (Belgium). In view of the variety of papers devoted to the crystallization of polymers, this book will be used in the next few years as a reference book for scientists concerned in the field of polymer physical chemistry. Crystallization of Polymers is mainly devoted to the experimental and theoretical study of the crystallization of synthetic polymers. As a kinetic study of the growth of polymer crystals should always be preceded by a morphological or a structural investigation, the structure, the morphology of polymer crystals and more particularly the lamellar and supralamellar organizations, as well as the nature of the crystal amorphous interface are reviewed and discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Order in Polymers presents the increasing importance of the relationships between order in the chemical constitution and in the steric structure of the macromolecules and physical and chemical properties of the polymers. This book discusses the simple types of steric order found in biopolymers. Organized into three parts encompassing 16 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the structural regularity as a primary requisite for the crystallization of a polymer. This text then examines the structure of cellulose, which is the most significant structural stereoregular polymer. Other chapters consider the major concepts of the stereoregulation of propylene catalytic polymerization. This book discusses as well the factors that determine microstructure and stereospecifity in polymerization. The final chapter deals with the significant role that membranes and membrane-related processes play in solving many ecological problems. This book is a valuable resource for chemical engineers, chemists, physicists, scientists, and research workers.

Book Structure and Dynamics of Confined Polymers

Download or read book Structure and Dynamics of Confined Polymers written by John J. Kasianowicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers are essential to biology because they can have enough stable degrees of freedom to store the molecular code of heredity and to express the sequences needed to manufacture new molecules. Through these they perform or control virtually every function in life. Although some biopolymers are created and spend their entire career in the relatively large free space inside cells or organelles, many biopolymers must migrate through a narrow passageway to get to their targeted destination. This suggests the questions: How does confining a polymer affect its behavior and function? What does that tell us about the interactions between the monomers that comprise the polymer and the molecules that confine it? Can we design and build devices that mimic the functions of these nanoscale systems? The NATO Advanced Research Workshop brought together for four days in Bikal, Hungary over forty experts in experimental and theoretical biophysics, molecular biology, biophysical chemistry, and biochemistry interested in these questions. Their papers collected in this book provide insight on biological processes involving confinement and form a basis for new biotechnological applications using polymers. In his paper Edmund DiMarzio asks: What is so special about polymers? Why are polymers so prevalent in living things? The chemist says the reason is that a protein made of N amino acids can have any of 20 different kinds at each position along the chain, resulting in 20 N different polymers, and that the complexity of life lies in this variety.

Book Structural Science of Crystalline Polymers

Download or read book Structural Science of Crystalline Polymers written by Kohji Tashiro and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 837 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the modern development of techniques for analysis of the hierarchical structure of polymers from both the experimental and theoretical points of view. Starting with molecular and crystal symmetry, the author explains fundamental and professional methods, such as wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering, neutron diffraction, electron diffraction, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, NMR, and synchrotron radiation. In addition, the author explains another indispensable method, computer simulation, which includes energy calculation, lattice dynamics, molecular dynamics, and quantum chemistry. These various methods are described in a systematic way so that the reader can utilize them for the purpose of 3D structure analysis of polymers. Not only such analytical knowledge but also the preparation techniques of samples necessary for these measurements and the methods of analyzing the experimental data collected in this way are given in a concrete manner. Examples are offered to help master the principles of how to clarify the static structures and dynamic structural changes in the phase transitions of various kinds of crystalline polymers that are revealed by these novel methods. The examples are quite useful for readers who want to apply these techniques in finding practical solutions to concrete problems that are encountered in their own research. The principal audience for this book is made up of young professional researchers including those working in industry, but it can also be used as an excellent reference for graduate-level students. This book is the first volume of a two-volume set with Structural Science of Crystalline Polymers: A Microscopically Viewed Structure–Property Relationship being the second volume by the same author.

Download or read book Absorbent Polymer Technology written by L. Brannon-Peppas and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been a veritable explosion of research and development in consumer-oriented fields that utilize polymeric materials which absorb large amounts of water. These fields encompass the preparation, characterization and commercialization of separation systems, pharmaceutical and personal care products such as infant diapers, feminine products, incontinence products and many other related areas. The polymeric materials utilized in these applications are known as absorbent or superabsorbent materials because of their ability to swell rapidly and to retain large volumes of water, urine and other biological fluids. The aim of this book is to introduce the fundamentals of polymer structure and swelling as related to polymers used for these superabsorbent materials. In the field of absorbence, particular attention is given to crosslinked structures which swell to more than fifty times their initial weight in water or electrolytic solutions. The book also provides descriptions of novel applications of superabsorbent materials as well as a detailed analysis of water transport in crosslinked polymers.Absorbent Polymer Technology should be of interest to chemists, polymer scientists, chemical engineers, and industrial scientists working with swellable polymeric systems in personal care, pharmaceutical, agricultural waste treatment and separation industries.

Book Structural Investigation of Star Polymer Networks Using NMR and SAXS

Download or read book Structural Investigation of Star Polymer Networks Using NMR and SAXS written by Lucas Löser and published by . This book was released on 2024* with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the structure of polymer gels consisting of star precursors using 1H-NMR and SAXS. For exploring the model-like structure of these gels, 1H Multi-Quantum NMR is used to extract quantitative information on the connectivity motif distribution for different variations of gels synthesized utilizing both permanent and transient crosslinks. The influence of the synthesis conditions on the emerging network structure is studied by varying preparation concentration, temperature, solvent, and precursors. The results are complemented by a structural investigation of the amphiphilic tetraPEG-tetraPCL system using PFG-NMR for the characterization of the diffusion of probe molecules and SAXS for an estimate on correlation length and length scale of microphase separation. Both methods were performed in selective (water) and nonselective (toluene) solvents. Finally, 1H MAS DQ NMR is used to demonstrate an immobilization effect of the PEG chain along the PCL cluster surface.
