Book Structural Health Monitoring of Large Structures Using Acoustic Emission Case Histories

Download or read book Structural Health Monitoring of Large Structures Using Acoustic Emission Case Histories written by Kanji Ono and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic emission (AE) techniques have successfully been used for assuring the structural integrity of large rocket motorcases since 1963, and their uses have expanded to ever larger structures, especially as structural health monitoring (SHM) of large structures has become the most urgent task for engineering communities around the world. The needs for advanced AE monitoring methods are felt keenly by those dealing with aging infrastructures. Many publications have appeared covering various aspects of AE techniques, but documentation of actual applications of AE techniques has been mostly limited to reports of successful results without technical details that allow objective evaluation of the results. There are some exceptions in the literature. In this Special Issue of the Acoustics section of Applied Sciences, we seek contributions covering these exceptions cited here. Here, we seek contributions describing case histories of AE applications to large structures that have achieved the goals of SHM by providing adequate technical information supporting the success stories. Types of structures can include aerospace and geological structures, bridges, buildings, factories, maritime facilities, off-shore structures, etc. Experiences with AE monitoring methods designed and proven for large stru

Book Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Fatigue Cracks in Steel Bridge Structures

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Fatigue Cracks in Steel Bridge Structures written by Jay McKeefry and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results from a laboratory study and field implementation of acoustic emission monitoring or fatigue cracks in cover-plated steel bridge girders. The acoustic monitoring successfully detected growing fatigue cracks in the lab when using both source location and a state of stress criteria. Application of this methodology on 3 field bridges also proved successful by detecting a propagating crack in 2 of the bridges and an extinguished crack in a third bridge.

Book Inspection and Monitoring Techniques for Bridges and Civil Structures

Download or read book Inspection and Monitoring Techniques for Bridges and Civil Structures written by G Fu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-09-20 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The safety, maintenance and repair of bridges and buildings depend on effective inspection and monitoring techniques. These methods need to be able to identify problems often hidden within structures before they become serious. This important collection reviews key techniques and their applications to bridges, buildings and other civil structures. The first group of chapters reviews ways of testing corrosion in concrete components. Given their continuing importance and vulnerability to decay, the next series of chapters describes ways of testing wood components within civil structures. A final group of chapters looks at visual and acoustic techniques and their use to assess bridges in particular.Inspection and monitoring techniques for bridges and civil structures is an invaluable reference for civil engineers involved in safety inspection, maintenance and repair of bridges and civil structures. - Reviews key inspection and monitoring techniques and their applications to bridges, building and other civil structures - Edited by a leading authority in the field

Book Protocols and Criteria for Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Fracture critical Steel Bridges

Download or read book Protocols and Criteria for Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Fracture critical Steel Bridges written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With bridge infrastructure in Minnesota aging, advancing techniques for ensuring bridge safety is a fundamental goal of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). Developing health monitoring systems for fracture-critical bridges is an essential objective in meeting the stated goal. This report documents the implementation of two, 16-sensor, acoustic emission monitoring systems in one of the tie girders of the Cedar Avenue Bridge, which is a fracture-critical tied arch bridge spanning the Minnesota River between Bloomington and Eagan, MN. The goal of the project is to develop a process for using acoustic emission technology to monitor one of the girders of the bridge while continuously collecting data from the monitoring systems. Given the cost of acoustic emission sensing equipment, an approach was adopted to space the sensors as widely as possible. Fracture tests were conducted on a specimen acoustically connected to the bridge to simulate fracture in a bridge member. Sets of criteria were developed to differentiate between acoustic emission data collected during fracture and ambient bridge (i.e. AE noise) data. The sets of criteria were applied to fracture test data and AE noise data to determine the validity of the criteria. For each criteria set, a period of Cedar Avenue Bridge monitoring data was analyzed. The results of the analysis of each period showed that the criteria could differentiate between the bridge AE noise data and the fracture test data. The AE noise data never met all of the criteria in the set, whereas all criteria were met during each of the applicable fracture tests.

Book Rail Crack Monitoring Using Acoustic Emission Technique

Download or read book Rail Crack Monitoring Using Acoustic Emission Technique written by Dan Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-23 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis provides an innovative strategy for rail crack monitoring using the acoustic emission (AE) technique. The field study presented is a significant improvement on laboratory studies in the literature in terms of complex rail profile and crack conditions as well as high operational noise. AE waves induced by crack propagation, crack closure, wheel-rail impact and operational noise were obtained through a series of laboratory and field tests, and analyzed by wavelet transform (WT) and synchrosqueezed wavelet transform (SWT). A wavelet power-based index and the enhanced SWT scalogram were sequentially proposed to classify AE waves induced by different mechanisms according to their energy distributions in the time–frequency domain. A novel crack sizing method taking advantage of crack closure-induced AE waves was developed based on fatigue tests in the laboratory. The propagation characteristics of AE waves in the rail were investigated, and Tsallis synchrosqueezed wavelet entropy (TSWE) with time was finally brought forward to detect and locate rail cracks in the field. The proposed strategy for detection, location and sizing of rail cracks helps to ensure the safe and smooth operation of the railway system. This thesis is of interest to graduate students, researchers and practitioners in the area of structural health monitoring.

Book Structural Integrity Evaluation Using AE Techniques

Download or read book Structural Integrity Evaluation Using AE Techniques written by RW. Harris and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic Emission structural integrity evaluation tests rely on the validity of the detected acoustic emission data and the ability of the practitioner to both analyze and interpret the data to make a correct decision on the future use of the structure tested. Unfortunately with acoustic emission surveillance testing, it is not possible to know that all the available data has been assessed properly. The equipment sensitivity, threshold settings, and event capture capacity, when combined with the operator's decision making ability in real time, make it very difficult to achieve reliable integrity evaluation. The main problem is to interpret the data and so any monitoring programs should involve Expert Systems in conjunction with both acoustic emission and other operational monitoring data to maximise the utilization of the large amounts of information now available from operating plants and structures.
