Book Structural Functions of Harmony

Download or read book Structural Functions of Harmony written by Arnold Schoenberg and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1969 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is Schoenberg's last completed theoretical work and represents his final thoughts on the subject of classical and romantic harmony. The earlier chapters recapitulate in condensed form the principles laid down in his 'Theory of Harmony'; the later chapters break entirely new ground, for they analyze the system of key relationships within the structure of whole movements and affirm the principle of 'monotonality, ' showing how all modulations within a movement are merely deviations from, and not negations of, its main tonality.

Book A Practical Approach to the Study of Form in Music

Download or read book A Practical Approach to the Study of Form in Music written by Peter Spencer and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 1994-07-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning musics organizing principles . . . Approaching the study of form as an exercise in perceiving the interaction of a number of discrete musical events, Spencer and Temkos book embodies much more than a search for visual clues. Students of form develop perceptual tools that allow them to proceed from the aural experience to an understanding of the arch-principles upon which music is organized. The authors hold that the organizing principles of a given piece of music may be gleaned from studying the internal attributes that give a section its specific identity, the functional relations between sections, and the ordering of those sections.

Book Classical Form

    Book Details:
  • Author : William E. Caplin
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2000-12-28
  • ISBN : 0199881758

Download or read book Classical Form written by William E. Caplin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-12-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on ideas first advanced by Arnold Schoenberg and later developed by Erwin Ratz, this book introduces a new theory of form for instrumental music in the classical style. The theory provides a broad set of principles and a comprehensive methodology for the analysis of classical form, from individual ideas, phrases, and themes to the large-scale organization of complete movements. It emphasizes the notion of formal function, that is, the specific role a given formal unit plays in the structural organization of a classical work.

Book The Cognition of Basic Musical Structures

Download or read book The Cognition of Basic Musical Structures written by David Temperley and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-08-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, David Temperley addresses a fundamental question about music cognition: how do we extract basic kinds of musical information, such as meter, phrase structure, counterpoint, pitch spelling, harmony, and key from music as we hear it? Taking a computational approach, Temperley develops models for generating these aspects of musical structure. The models he proposes are based on preference rules, which are criteria for evaluating a possible structural analysis of a piece of music. A preference rule system evaluates many possible interpretations and chooses the one that best satisfies the rules. After an introductory chapter, Temperley presents preference rule systems for generating six basic kinds of musical structure: meter, phrase structure, contrapuntal structure, harmony, and key, as well as pitch spelling (the labeling of pitch events with spellings such as A flat or G sharp). He suggests that preference rule systems not only show how musical structures are inferred, but also shed light on other aspects of music. He substantiates this claim with discussions of musical ambiguity, retrospective revision, expectation, and music outside the Western canon (rock and traditional African music). He proposes a framework for the description of musical styles based on preference rule systems and explores the relevance of preference rule systems to higher-level aspects of music, such as musical schemata, narrative and drama, and musical tension.

Book Music of the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Music of the Twentieth Century written by Ton de Leeuw and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ton de Leeuw was a truly groundbreaking composer. As evidenced by his pioneering study of compositional methods that melded Eastern traditional music with Western musical theory, he had a profound understanding of the complex and often divisive history of twentieth-century music. Now his renowned chronicle Music of the Twentieth Century is offered here in a newly revised English-language edition. Music of the Twentieth Century goes beyond a historical survey with its lucid and impassioned discussion of the elements, structures, compositional principles, and terminologies of twentieth-century music. De Leeuw draws on his experience as a composer, teacher, and music scholar of non-European music traditions, including Indian, Indonesian, and Japanese music, to examine how musical innovations that developed during the twentieth century transformed musical theory, composition, and scholarly thought around the globe.

Book Fundamentals of Musical Composition

Download or read book Fundamentals of Musical Composition written by Arnold Schoenberg and published by Gardners Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Musical Composition represents the culmination of more than forty years in Schoenberg's life devoted to the teaching of musical principles to students and composers in Europe and America. For his classes he developed a manner of presentation in which 'every technical matter is discussed in a very fundamental way, so that at the same time it is both simple and thorough'. This book can be used for analysis as well as for composition. On the one hand, it has the practical objective of introducing students to the process of composing in a systematic way, from the smallest to the largest forms; on the other hand, the author analyses in thorough detail and with numerous illustrations those particular sections in the works of the masters which relate to the compositional problem under discussion.

Book Structural and Ornamental Diatonic Harmony in Western Music c 1700 1880

Download or read book Structural and Ornamental Diatonic Harmony in Western Music c 1700 1880 written by Zelda Potgieter and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides first-year university students majoring in western art music with a thorough study of both structural and ornamental diatonic harmony in the Common Practice Period (c.1700 until the late 1800s). It provides one of the most comprehensive coverages of the topic of ornamental diatonic harmony published to date, and offers ample musical examples to illustrate the concepts explained, as well as exercises in creative four-part writing, analysis, aural development and keyboard harmony to practice the application of these concepts. Understanding the difference between the way chords act at the structural level and the ornamental level explains why rules that apply to one do not necessarily apply to the other, providing novel insights into the interplay between harmony and melody and renewed appreciation for the ingenious ways in which composers throughout the Common Practice Period exploited these techniques.

Book Music Theory and Analysis in the Writings of Arnold Schoenberg 1874 1951

Download or read book Music Theory and Analysis in the Writings of Arnold Schoenberg 1874 1951 written by Norton Dudeque and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnold Schoenberg's theory of music has been much discussed but his approach to music theory needs a new historical and theoretical assessment in order to provide a clearer understanding of his contributions to music theory and analysis. Norton Dudeque's achievement in this book involves the synthesis of Schoenberg's theoretical ideas from the whole of the composer's working life, including material only published well after his death. The book discusses Schoenberg's rejection of his German music theory heritage and past approaches to music-theory pedagogy, the need for looking at musical structures differently and to avoid aesthetic and stylistic issues. Dudeque provides a unique understanding of the systematization of Schoenberg's tonal-harmonic theory, thematic/motivic-development theory and the links with contemporary and past music theories. The book is complemented by a special section that explores the practical application of the theoretical material already discussed. The focus of this section is on Schoenberg's analytical practice, and the author's response to it. Norton Dudeque therefore provides a comprehensive understanding of Schoenberg's thinking on tonal harmony, motive and form that has hitherto not been attempted.
