Research in this field is extremely new and has been rapidly growing in the last 10 years, because the elaborate structures created in nature can now be fabricated through various types of nanotechnologies. Indeed, a fundamental book covering this field from biological, physical, and engineering viewpoints has long been expected.Coloring in nature comes mostly from inherent colors of materials, though it sometimes has a purely physical origin such as diffraction or interference of light. The latter, called structural color or iridescence, has long been a problem of scientific interest. Recently, structural colors have attracted great interest because various photonic architectures, now developing in modern technologies, have been spontaneously created in the self-organization process and have been extensively used as one of the important visual functions. In this book, the fundamental optical properties underlying structural colors are explained, and these mysteries of nature are surveyed from the viewpoint of biological diversity and according to their sophisticated structures. The book proposes a general principle of structural colors based on the structural hierarchy and presents up-to-date applications.

Book excerpt: We present examples of familiar phenomena found in nonequilibrium systems, including oscillatory phenomena, order-formation processes, and pattern formation. In particular, we introduce commonly used mathematical methods to analyze their characteristics. First, we present oscillations described by the Lotka–Volterra and van der Pol equations, the Brusselator, the Oregonator, and relaxation oscillations as examples of oscillatory phenomena. Second, we investigate the order-formation process in colloidal crystals and present an experimental observation of 2D array formation. Third, we demonstrate pattern formation in crystals on the basis of the Mullins–Sekerka instability, and in chemical and biological systems on the basis of the Turing instability. In particular, we describe the optical properties and development of sophisticated structural patterns that directly interact with light. Finally, we briefly describe a theoretical phase-transition analogy that might clarify the concept of order formation in nonequilibrium systems.

The benefits of such biomimetic nanostructures are plentiful: they provide brilliant, iridescent color with mechanical stability and light steering capabilities. Structural color can be harnessed for long lasting paints, fabrics, signaling and communication systems, and displays. The color changes achievable with these structures are intuitively interpretable by humans. We discuss the methods for control over material design to tune nano- and microscale structure and properties in order to achieve macro scale responses that humans can interact with in meaningful and interesting ways. Through this work, we aim to provide tools with which researchers can explore color through a material design lens.
