Book excerpt: This research presents an analytical and experimental investigation for the use of flexural CFRP sheets as a strengthening technique to improve the shear capacity of reinforced concrete deep beams. The analytical work presents a new analysis method that is developed to predict the response of reinforced concrete deep beams with and without flexural CFRP strengthening. The method utilizes the truss analogy approach that is extended from the Strut-and-Tie Model (STM) for unstrengthened beams. In contrary to STM, the new method is used to capture the full structural response of unstrengthened beams by modeling a single truss. On the other hand, the new method is used to predict the entire response of strengthened beams by assuming the beam to be composed of two parallel compatible trusses. The first truss has its lower chord member composed of the steel bars while the second truss has its lower chord member composed of the flexural CFPR sheets. By imposing the compatibility condition of a statically indeterminate truss, the contribution of each truss is realized. The experimental work was conducted on three deep beam specimens with identical rectangular cross-sectional area. The first beam was tested as a control beam, and the other two beams were strengthened in flexure with four layers of flexural CFRP sheets anchored by two different flexural anchorage devices. The first strengthened beam was anchored with GFRP patches applied to both sides of the beam. The second strengthened beam was anchored with side GFRP bars inserted longitudinally to both sides of the beam. The comparison between the analytical and experimental results showed reasonable agreement and asserted the validity of the analytical approach and methodology developed in this study.

Book excerpt: Typically, the reinforced concrete (RC) deep beam with large openings are facing some severe problems such as the interruption of natural load transfer by concrete struts acting in compression which can cause an intensive reduction in strength; and the clearly visible cracks in serviceability conditions. The CFRP has become an alternative solution to this issue and being extensively used as an external reinforcement to resolve the strength requirements in structural systems due to extremely strong yet light weight, outstanding fatigue properties, excellent corrosion resistance and easy yet efficient application on concrete. This experimental study is focuses on the investigation of the effect of CFRP wrap in strengthening RC deep beams with large square openings located in shear zone. Three approaches are under consideration; the first is the determination of natural load transfer in normal deep beam without opening, the second is the large square openings in deep beam without CFRP strengthening, and the third is the large square openings in deep beam with CFRP attached around the openings. A total of four RC deep beams which included a solid RC control beam, a deep beam with two large square openings, and two beams with two large square openings strengthened by using CFRP strips in different strengthening configurations, were tested to failure under four point loading to determine the relative structural behaviour such as ultimate load, failure mode, crack patterns, and load deflection behaviour. All RC deep beams were designed in a dimension of 120 x 600 mm and 2400 mm in length. The width and height of large square openings were in a dimension of 270 x 270 mm and located 300 mm from the edge of the deep beam. The loading point and support were located at 800 mm and 300 mm from the edge of the deep beam, respectively. RC deep beam with large square openings, US-BSO was significantly reduced the beam capacity by 61.76 % as compared to solid control beam, CB. However, the RC deep beam with large square openings strengthened by CFRP strips wrapped in U-shaped, SU-BSO has increases the beam capacity by 62.77 % compared to US-BSO. From the results obtained, it was found that the most effective CFRP strengthening method for RC deep beam with large square openings was U-shaped, which recovered the beam capacity up to 62.24 % as compared to solid control beam.

The structural behaviour, including the load deflection, cracking patterns, failure mode, and effectiveness of the CFRP wraps were investigated. A total of four (4) specimens of beams with compressive strength of 35 MPa were tested to induce shear failure under 4 points loading test, which included one solid deep beam acted as a control beam (CB), one of which was tested without strengthening (US-BRO), and the remaining beams were strengthened with CFRP wraps in varying configurations around the opening (S-BRO-1, S-BRO-2). The beam had a cross section of 120 mm in width and 600 mm in depth as well as a length of 2400 mm. All the test specimens had a same geometry, main reinforcement arrangements and openings location. All the preparatory works of specimen materials were conducted in Laboratory FKASA. The examined parameter was the effect of configurations of the CFRP wraps used for the shear strengthening. The inclusion of un-strengthened large rectangular openings in the shear zone of a reinforced concrete deep beam leads to a reduction of ultimate beam strength by approximately 70%. The application of CFRP wraps with the presented strengthening configurations restricted the propagation of the diagonal crack and effectively increases ultimate load-carrying capacity as well as the ductility of the beam. The strength re-gains by U-shaped strengthening configuration around the openings was approximately 36% as compared to the beam with un-strengthened openings. However, the deep beam with U-shaped CFRP with horizontal fiber strengthened at the top and bottom chords of the openings were not capable to restore the control beam's original structural strength remarkably. The beam only managed to re-gain about 41% of the control beam's capacity.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) are the most widely used externally bonded-reinforcing (EBR) materials for strengthening and retrofitting of RC structural members. The use of high strength galvanized steel mesh (GSM) strengthening material has recently gained some acceptance. However, Both CFRP and GSM have high strength but have low ductility. Recently developed aluminum alloys (AA) have high ductility and some desirable characteristics that may overcome some of the shortcomings of CFRP and GSM. Combining AA with CFRP and GSM will result in a hybrid material with balanced strength and ductility. Therefore, the major aim of this research is to develop a hybrid ductile and strong retrofitting system by combining AA plates with GSM and CFRP laminates to strengthen RC beams in flexure. A comprehensive experimental program was carried out to determine the tensile strength and the bond strength of the hybrid system. Fifteen-coupon specimens were tested for tensile strength, six specimens of concrete prisms for bond strength and 25 T-beam specimens for flexural strength under a four-point loading. Results showed an increase in the flexural capacity of the strengthened specimen ranging from 10% to 77% compared to the control beam and a decline in ductility of 13% to 59% compared to the un-strengthened specimen. Furthermore, analytical models based on ACI 440.2R-08 guidelines were employed to capture the flexural behavior of the tested specimens. Experimental results correlated well with the analytical predictions in a range of 30% of the experimental values. The study concluded that the newly proposed hybrid systems are promising systems for the improvement of the flexural behavior (strength and ductility) of RC beams."--Abstract.

Strengthening configuration of CFRP-wrap used in this study were U-wrap and surface-wrap which applied with one layer of CFRP and in vertical alignment (90o). Four RC deep beams which included a solid control beam, a beam with two large circular openings, beams with two large circular openings strengthened using U-wrap and surface-wrap were tested to failure under four-point loading. All the beam specimens were in a dimension of 120 x 600 mm and 2400 mm in length. The support and loading point were located at 300 mm and 800 mm from the edge of the RC deep beams, respectively. Circular openings was designed with a standard of 0.45h which considered as large circular openings in a diameter of 270 mm that located 435 mm from the edge of the RC deep beams. Shear span-to-depth ratio (a/h) in this study was 0.83 in which the distance between the loading point and the support was 500 mm in order for the beam specimens to fail in shear region. RC deep beam with large circular openings, NS-BCO greatly reduced the beam strength, approximately 51.20 % as compared to the control beam. On the other hand, RC deep beam with circular openings strengthened using U-wrap, UW-BCO increases the beam strength up to almost 85.0 % as compared to NS-BCO. Hence, the most effective strengthening method was U-wrap, UW-BCO which re-gained the beam strength up to 90.28 % as compared to control beam.

For example, steel plates and Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) jackets are externally bonded to members to increase their capacity in flexure and shear. However, due to the issue of corrosion these strengthening systems may lose their efficiency with time. FRP materials have been used to strengthen many structural components of different shapes and types. FRP jackets, FRP Strips, and FRP rods have commonly been used to rehabilitate existing structural components. The many advantages of using FRP as strengthening materials have made this material an attractive alternative: advantages such as lightweight, high strength, and ease of setting up. Among the many applications using FRP, Near Surface Mounted -- Fiber Reinforced polymer (NSM-FRP) is a promising technique used to strengthen concrete members. However, de-bonding issues have to be overcome to make this technique efficient and reliable. The NSM-FRP technique consists of making a groove along the surface of the concrete member to be retrofitted with depth less than the cover of the member. After cleaning the groove, epoxy paste is used to fill two-thirds of the groove's depth. The FRP element is then mounted in the groove. Finally, the groove is filled with epoxy and the excessive epoxy is leveled with surface of the concrete. This technique makes the FRP material completely covered by epoxy in the cover of the concrete. This method can be used for strengthening both the positive and negative moment regions of girders and slabs. Groove size, paste, concrete, and rods properties are the main variables that control the efficiency of the NSM-FRP rods. The main objective of this research project is to determine the behavior of reinforced concrete beams that are strengthened with NSM-CFRP reinforcement bars. In this research project, the bond characteristics of NSM-CFRP reinforcement bars are first determined from pullout tests. Then, NSM-CFRP rods are installed in reinforced concrete beams and the beams are tested. Loads, strains, and deflections are measured and theoretical and measured capacities are compared. Finally, the reliability and efficiency of using NSM-CFRP rods technique in retrofitting existing structures is observed.
