Download or read book Strings Hands Shadows written by John Bell and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puppetry is arguably the most widespread form of performance. The artistry of puppetry includes aspects of the visual arts, theatre, music, and dance. Puppets can be traced as far back as ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome and are found today in cultures worldwide, across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. John Bell shows how puppets have been used to relay myths, poke fun at political figures, comment on cultural events of the period, express moral stories, and entertain adults and children alike. This richly illustrated book gives a historical overview and looks at the wide variety of this traditional art form. From European and Asian puppets in modern and ancient times to the Puppet Modernism movements, the book explores the important innovators and innovations of puppetry. Brief biographies of key figures such as Tony Sarg (credited with creating the first over-life-size puppets used for parades), Paul McPharlin (creator of Punch’s Circus), and Jim Henson (world-reknowned creator of many puppets, including the Muppets) help describe the evolution of puppetry. Definitions and descriptions of a variety of puppet styles, including shadow puppets, marionettes, hand puppets, rod puppets, and many others, add to the understanding of this fascinating form of art. With over one hundred color illustrations, this book highlights the "lives" of such characters as Kermit the Frog, Punch and Judy, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the traditional Chinese puppet Te-Yung to reveal the ways that puppets have become an integral part of many cultures. Captivating and fun, this book offers valuable insight into the wonderful world of puppetry.

Book excerpt: In a war between democracy and civil rights, which do you choose? "The ability to control one’s own future is not a privilege, it’s a right!" The image of the figure who spoke was carried across all the comms channels by a hacker signal. It was an extreme ectomorph, tall and ultra thin, with slanted eyes, swirling dotted tattoos, an extended cranium and high curling hair.… "The ability to select one’s own government," it continued, "is not a privilege, it’s a right. Democracy is the only form of government that ensures these privileges remain rights - inalienable human rights. Rights that cannot be controlled by the privileged few, nor shared with bug-eyes, slimies or others whose alien ways corrupt human society! I am the Dalang, Speaker of the Wayang Liberation Front, and this is not the last you will hear from me! Long live the Federalist Revolution!" Strings on a Shadow Puppet is the exciting debut novel from T. L. Evans that combines the thrills of military science fiction with the thoughtful intrigue of espionage and mystery. Book excerpt: As the world settled into peace following World War II, sisters Beverly and Carolyn "Carrie" Leeds face a tragedy that forces them to stand on their own. The lives of the Leeds sisters begin in a lush valley in upstate New York. They know what it is to be loved and protected by caring parents-until that fateful day in 1947 when they get the call from the railroad. Their parents' train plunges into oblivion while traveling back to New York in the middle of a fierce blizzard after a trestle collapses. The Leeds sisters are close reflections of each other, with their rich shade of tawny hair, deep brown eyes, fair skin, and average height. Only one physical difference sets them apart-Beverly was born with an extensive skin blemish, a blood red birth mark that covers half of her face, running down her shoulder and neck. This dramatic difference sets her and her sister on distinctively different paths. Beverly continually suffers from the deep shame that sets her apart, sheltering herself in her reclusive lifestyle. Meanwhile, Carrie branches out into the world. Will the two sisters ever be close, or will their vastly different personalities carry them even farther apart?

Book Channeling the Future

Download or read book Channeling the Future written by Lincoln Geraghty and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-04-02 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though science fiction certainly existed prior to the surge of television in the 1950s, the genre quickly established roots in the new medium and flourished in subsequent decades. In Channeling the Future: Essays on Science Fiction and Fantasy Television, Lincoln Geraghty has assembled a collection of essays that focuses on the disparate visions of the past, present, and future offered by science fiction and fantasy television since the 1950s and that continue into the present day. These essays not only shine new light on often overlooked and forgotten series but also examine the 'look' of science fiction and fantasy television, determining how iconography, location and landscape, special effects, set design, props, and costumes contribute to the creation of future and alternate worlds. Contributors to this volume analyze such classic programs as The Twilight Zone, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., as well as contemporary programs, including Star Trek: The Next Generation, Angel, Firefly, Futurama, and the new Battlestar Galactica. These essays provide a much needed look at how science fiction television has had a significant impact on history, culture, and society for the last sixty years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two great writers and their books that have had an influenced on me in the writing of this book are Jonathan Swifts (1667-1745) and John Bunyan (1628-1688). Jonathan Swift masterpiece titled 'Gulliver's Travels' was an allegorical attack on the hypocrisy of the human behavior that he witnessed in almost every level of life in England, especially on the political stage. John Bunyan was the author of another famous allegorical book about a soul in search of salvation-'Pilgrim's Progress.' I do not believe this book will in any way approach the level of these two great masterpieces, but like Swift and Bunyan, I too have some comments about the behavior of my fellow Spacelanders (as I like to refer to them). What do they really believe in? What have they committed and dedicated their lives to? Because I believe the answers to these questions are the determining factors of their behavior. Like all allegorical books you will need a great imagination. But as Oscar Wilde said, "Imagination is a quality given man to compensate him for what he is not, and a sense of humor was provided to console him for what he is." Edwin Willwerth has been married for over fifty years and is the father of three children. He was a high school mathematics teacher for thirty years. Besides teaching in several public and private schools within the United States, he has also taught in Paraguay for one year, Nepal for two years and China for six months. He has been very active in his local church, serving for a number of years as a Sunday School teacher and later as head of the Sunday School Department. He was the Missionary Director within his church for several years. He has also spent time on Missionary projects in Haiti and Campeche, Mexico.

Martin insists she isn’t dead and doesn’t belong here, but as far as she can tell, the trip was a one-way ticket. She can’t even remember her real name or how she ended up here. In Between is dangerous enough without wasting time peering through the weave at the living and dreaming of what might have been. Of course, if Adriel, the witch, and Lynx, the cat, insist on trying to help her, she can hardly refuse to meet them at the edge. But if magic can’t locate her living body, how can one stubborn cat achieve the impossible? Does enough magic really exist in the world to bring her back over? Lynx has beaten the odds before, and he's determined to do so again. The stakes have always been high, but crossing the veil may be more than anyone can survive.
