Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary effort of scholars from history, women's studies, and family and consumer sciences, Remaking Home Economics covers the field's history of opening career opportunities for women and responding to domestic and social issues. Calls to "bring back home economics" miss the point that it never went away, say Sharon Y. Nickols and Gwen Kay--home economics has been remaking itself, in study and practice, for more than a century. These new essays, relevant for a variety of fields--history, women's studies, STEM, and family and consumer sciences itself--take both current and historical perspectives on defining issues including home economics philosophy, social responsibility, and public outreach; food and clothing; gender and race in career settings; and challenges to the field's identity and continuity. Home economics history offers a rich case study for exploring common ground between the broader culture and this highly gendered profession. This volume describes the resourcefulness of past scholars and professionals who negotiated with cultural and institutional constraints to produce their work, as well as the innovations of contemporary practitioners who continue to change the profession, including its name and identity. The widespread urge to reclaim domestic skills, along with a continual need for fresh ways to address obesity, elder abuse, household debt, and other national problems affirms the field's vitality and relevance. This volume will foster dialogue both inside and outside the academy about the changes that have remade (and are remaking) family and consumer sciences.

Download or read book A Comprehensive National Plan for New Initiatives in Home Economics Research Extension and Higher Education written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In response to a Congressional call for action, Federal initiatives to improve and expand research, extension and higher education programs in human nutrition, home economics and family life are proposed. Federal commitments to strong human resources-oriented programs in agriculture focus on 4 high-priority problems: family economic stability and security; energy and environment; food, nutrition and health; and family strengths and social environment. An implementation plan for each proposal suggests research and higher education activities, integration arrangements, and 2-, 5- and 10- year targets. Proposed plans are to be conducted cooperatively by the USDA, land-grant universities, and cooperative extension services. The relationship between family needs and the foodand agricultural system must be closely examined. Strong research and educational programs need Federal leadership, financial support and concerted effort in order to solve theproblems of families in the 1980's.

This typology addresses three types of home economics programs - teaching, extension, and academia - through the lens of characteristics, curricula, and examples. Reviewing historical events that lead into the differentiation of home economics programs throughout the United States offers unique insights into the reasons for the development of each type. This typology offers a different point of view in considering what home economics programs entailed, and defines the field as an intentional and academic program of study for the women of higher education.
