Book Hydrological and Biological Responses to Forest Practices

Download or read book Hydrological and Biological Responses to Forest Practices written by John D. Stednick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alsea Logging and Aquatic Resources Study, commissioned by the Oregon Legislature in 1959, marked the beginning of four decades of research in the Pacific Northwest devoted to understanding the impacts of forest practices on water quality, water quantity, aquatic habitat, and aquatic organism popu- tions. While earlier watershed research examined changes in runoff and erosion from various land uses, this study was the first watershed experiment to focus so heavily on aquatic habitat and organism response to forest practices. The Alsea Watershed Study, as it came to be known, extended over 15 years with seven years of pretreatment calibration measurements, a year of treatment, and seven years of post-treatment monitoring. The research was a cooperative effort with scientists from Oregon State University, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Cooperating landowners included the Georgia-Pacific Corporation, the U.S. Forest Service, and a local rancher. It was a remarkable 15-year partnership marked by excellent cooperation among the participants and outstanding coordination among the scientists, many of whom participated actively for the entire period.

Book Improving Fish Stock Assessments

Download or read book Improving Fish Stock Assessments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.

Download or read book River Biota written by Peter P. Calow and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-07-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As with all ecosystems, river systems involve a complex interaction of a rich diversity of micro-organisms, plants and animals with their physical and chemical environment. The river habitat presents unique problems for organisms exposed to unidirectional currents, seasonal variation in flow, and disturbance due to pollution and other human interference. The book starts with a description of the taxa, their adaptations and their ecologies, followed by chapters describing the ecosystem processes in terms of trophic interactions and the key production processes related to photosynthesis and decomposition. A major chapter then considers the principles, practices and problems associated with making reliable observations on river organisms, leading to final chapters investigating how river biota are impacted by human activity and how, in turn, they can be used as indicators of these effects in river-management programmes.

Book Macroinvertebrate Community Response to Timber Harvest and Spawning Salmon in Southeast Alaska Rainforest Streams

Download or read book Macroinvertebrate Community Response to Timber Harvest and Spawning Salmon in Southeast Alaska Rainforest Streams written by Emily Yvonne Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the separate and interactive effects of timber harvest and salmon spawning on benthic macroinvertebrate community composition and distribution in Southeast Alaska streams. I predicted that 1) spawning salmon disturb benthic macroinvertebrate communities in riffles habitats and increase invertebrate drift, 2) the magnitude of spawning salmon disturbance is greater in highly harvested watersheds relative to less-impacted streams and, 3) that macroinvertebrates utilize refugia habitats such as backwater pools, stream edges, and the hyporheic zone during the salmon run to avoid riffle epilithic disturbances. Macroinvertebrates were collected quantitatively and qualitatively in multiple habitats during salmon runs on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska in 2007 and 2008. Spawning salmon caused significant declines in riffle macroinvertebrate density, biomass, and richness and the magnitude of this effect increased with increasing timber harvest intensity. In less-impacted streams, macroinvertebrate density and biomass increased. Macroinvertebrate density and richness significantly increased in stream drift during spawning. Stream edges and the hyporheic zone appear to offer refugia for macroinvertebrates during salmon spawning. This study demonstrated that timber harvest activities intensify the effects of spawning salmon disturbance on macroinvertebrate communities and that macroinvertebrates may utilize refugia in response to salmon disturbance and in Southeast Alaska streams.
