Book excerpt: Refinement of this curriculum during the next four decades preceded dramatic change in the early twentieth century: job-related education, an elective system, and junior college status. Pre-professional programs, coeducation and a baccalaureate program followed. Next came new degrees and new venues. The 1980s and 1990s brought non-traditional adult education at twenty-five sites throughout Virginia that soon eclipsed the traditional program."

Book excerpt: Since its incorporation in 1833, Danville has proved one of the Old Dominion State's most interesting and historic cities, ranging from its brief stint as the last capital during the waning hours of the Confederacy, to its role as a major tobacco and textile producer in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, to the city's infamous disasters, such as the wreck of the Old 97. In these images, readers will journey back into the Danville of yesteryear and explore many elements of the city's past: its historic churches along Main Street, its stunning Victorian and Edwardian architectural treasures along Millionaires Row, and many of the city's most recognizable structures, including schools, businesses, and early government buildings.

  • Author : Ray Rivlin
  • Publisher : The History Press
  • Release : 2011-06-01

  • Pages : 380 pages

Download or read book Jewish Ireland written by Ray Rivlin and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewish Ireland: A Social History is an engaging and thoroughly researched panorama of Irish Jewry. Based on library and archival material, private memoirs and oral testimony, it traces Irish-Jewish life from the 1880s when Orthodox Russian Jews, forced to flee Tsarist persecution, began arriving in Ireland without any means of support, little secular education and no understanding of English. Overcoming poverty and antipathy, they established Jewish enclaves around the South Circular Road in Dublin and in townships and cities throughout Ireland, educated themselves from peddlers to professionals and entreprenurs, took an active part in the Irish civil war and other major conflicts, engaged in national politics and sport and achieved acclaim in literature, art and music. This insightful and often humorous portrayal of a people underlines the contribution made to Ireland by its Jewish citizens and gives an invaluable understanding of the Jewish way of life to the wider community.

Book The King s Hall Within the University of Cambridge in the Later Middle Ages

Download or read book The King s Hall Within the University of Cambridge in the Later Middle Ages written by Alan B. Cobban and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study of the King's Hall, Cambridge, from its foundation in the early fourteenth century until its dissolution in 1546. It is based largely on the 26 extant volumes of the King's Hall accounts which form one of the most remarkable sequences of medieval collegiate records in Europe. The rich profusion of the material has made it possible to reconstruct the economic, constitutional and business organisation of a medieval academic society, thereby providing for the college that same kind of exhaustive treatment which has been lavished upon other categories of medieval institutions. Dr Cobban discusses the vital contribution made by the King's Hall to the evolution of the University of Cambridge and shows how the interpretation of medieval Cambridge history has to be considerably modified. He demonstrates the important formative influence of the King's Hall in shaping the course of English collegiate development and the ways in which this College was finely attuned to the new educational trends of the age.

Book Subversive Southerner

Download or read book Subversive Southerner written by Catherine Fosl and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a Foreword by Angela Y. Davis Winner of the 2003 Oral History Association Book AwardWinner of the 2003 Gustavus Myers Center for Human Rights Outstanding Book Award Anne McCarty Braden (1924-2006) was a courageous southern white woman who in the late 1940s rejected her segregationist and privileged past to become a lifelong crusader against racial discrimination. Arousing the conscience of white southerners to the reality of racial injustice, Braden was branded a communist and seditionist by southern politicians who used McCarthyism to buttress legal and institutional segregation as it came under fire in deferral courts. She became, nevertheless, one of the civil rights movement's staunchest white allies and one of five southern whites commended by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in his 1963 "Letter from Birmingham Jail." Although Braden remained a controversial figure even in the movement, her commitment superseded her radical reputation, and she became a mentor and advisor to students who launched the 1960s sit-ins and to successive generations of peace and justice activists. In this riveting, oral history-based biography, Catherine Fosl also offers a social history of how racism, sexism, and anticommunism overlapped in the twentieth-century south and how ripples from the Cold War divided and limited the southern civil rights movement.
