Download or read book Competitive strategy of global container shipping industry The case of NOL APL written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The container shipping industry is essentially a service industry, based on the derived need of shippers wanting to transport their goods to buyers around the world. The industry relies on the volume of world trade and consequently is highly cyclical with its profitability being dependent, in large part, on the health of the global economy. It is also a highly capital intensive industry that requires large amount of investment in large scale fixed assets, such as ocean vessels, ports facilities, terminal equipments, global office networks and communication infrastructure. The industry has been undergoing a period of restructuring and consolidation in the 1990s, reflected in both merger and acquisition and in the formation of global alliances. This paper will explore the literature on growth alternatives and competitive advantages of the industry. The specific case on NOL/APL growth path and its key success factors of strategy-performance relationship will also be identified. This paper will conclude by making some suggestions on longer-term strategy for the company in order to generate sustainable profitability and financial success for the NOL/APL group.

Book Managing Global Logistics for Business Growth

Download or read book Managing Global Logistics for Business Growth written by Anthony Barone and published by Buoyant Capital. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a lot of reasons why companies go global. A particular foreign market may present a greater profitability opportunity than the local market of the business. Perhaps, the business has reached the tipping point in its export business and the market has grown large enough to merit an additional manufacturing facility or partner in another country. Maybe access to skilled, lower-cost workers is an attraction. Possibly setting up a local shop in a foreign market will help circumvent trade barriers that are constraining the company’s growth. The book is for small to medium enterprises (SME), a business that has grown beyond the “start-up venture”. The SME would be an ongoing business, with employees, receivables, and payables. It has a business growth plan, and as the manager, you know what business you are in and have the resources to expand. SMEs typically do not have a cadre of specialists, particularly where logistics and trade compliance are concerned. Those duties are most likely being added to existing staff with similar domestic responsibilities. However, realize that global is not the same as local business, it is outside of common knowledge and there are matters that managers need to understand better so they do not make serious mistakes in the process of going global. Book International Maritime Transport

Download or read book International Maritime Transport written by Heather Leggate and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the international maritime transport industry is difficult to overstate. This new book presents an interdisciplinary approach from a wide range of internationally-based experts. International Maritime Transport represents a radical departure from previous works in its structure and approach. The section editors each discuss the state of the art in the opening chapter, before introducing a selection of works providing a wide-ranging analysis of the subject. Wide discretion of approach has provided literary freedom for individual opinion and analysis within the overall framework: this permits a level of innovation which is perhaps stifled by the more standardized model. Whilst each perspective can be seen as exclusive, together they form a comprehensive volume of issues in contemporary maritime transport. Topics covered include: ports as interfaces, logistics, manpower and skills, financial risk and opportunities, the regulatory framework. Each chapter contains an introduction which explains the context of the chapter within the book and the contemporary state of the art. Under the editorship of maritime experts James McConville, Alfonso Morvillo and Heather Leggate, the book is sure to be of interest to students and academics working on maritime studies, as well as being useful to professionals and policy makers in the maritime industry.

Book Port Investment and Container Shipping Markets

Download or read book Port Investment and Container Shipping Markets written by Oecd and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-25 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-scale port projects have irreversible effects on land use and multiple impacts on the local economy and local community. They affect the way that the regional and national economy operates as a whole, with major impacts on regional transport systems. Port planners make better decisions when these broad impacts are examined as part of the development of a national freight transport and logistics strategy. Private investment in port terminals is also facilitated by the certainty engendered by development of a national freight transport and logistics strategy. This report examines the issues that need to be considered before the decision to proceed to costly expansions with long-life spans and a structural influence on the local and national economy. The report benefits from a case study of Chile, where plans for a major expansion of port capacity in the central part of the country are well advanced. Chile provides the detail for an examination of factors critical to decisions on container port investments anywhere: demand forecasts, change in liner shipping markets, hinterland transport capacity, competition between container terminals, and the framework for financing of investment.
