Book Strategic Survey 2009

Download or read book Strategic Survey 2009 written by IISS and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strategic Survey is a journal of records that includes all relevant names and titles, chronologies and dates. But it is also much more: the hard facts are embossed in considered and nuanced analysis over 300 pages of text. The Strategic Survey opens with 'Perspectives', an assessment of the effect of major events and trends on the strategic landscape. Next, particular strategic policy issues, such as terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, missile defence and the future of peacekeeping, are examined in separate chapters. Another eighteen to twenty chapters of similar length, written along thematic rather than merely chronological lines, cover developments in particular regions or countries. The Strategic Survey concludes with 'Prospectives', an essay setting forth strategic priorities for the coming year. Also included are thirty-two pages of maps depicting strategically important activity and political change - such as piracy and Russia's new federal districts - globally, regionally and locally. The interplay of political developments and the actual or potential use of military force remains The Strategic Survey's chief concern.

Book The Muslim Croat Civil War in Central Bosnia

Download or read book The Muslim Croat Civil War in Central Bosnia written by Charles R. Shrader and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Muslim-Croat Civil War in Central Bosnia, 1992–1994 Charles R. Shrader offers the first full-scale military history of a crucial conflict in Bosnia between two former allies. When the Bosnian Serbs and their Serbian allies attacked Bosnia-Herzegovina in March, 1992, the Bosnian Croats and Muslims collaborated to defend themselves. As Serbian pressure increased and it became clear that the West would not intervene, the two allies began to stake out their own claims. Drawing on testimony and exhibits from cases presented before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Shrader describes the organization and tactical doctrine of the Croatian Defense Forces and the Muslim-led Army of Bosnia-Herzegovina. He analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the two sides in such fields as communications, training, and logistics. He assesses not only the problems of command and control in the newly formed armies, but also the impact of criminal activity, the mujahedeen, and the intervention of peacekeeping forces. What looked to many like aggression by the Bosnian Croats, Shrader views as the adoption of an “active defense,” a doctrine embraced by U. S. forces, against a predatory Muslim force. He believes UN and European observes rushed to judgment regarding the aggressive intent of the Croatian command. Far from being the attackers, Shrader concludes, the Bosnian Croats in Central Bosnia were clearly outnumbered, outgunned, and on the defensive. Surrounded by superior Muslim forces, they barely held out in their enclaves in the Lasva Valley until a cease-fire was achieved in February 1994. Although Shrader’s work is a detailed, meticulous, analysis by a neutral expert, not everyone will find his conclusions comfortable. But every serious student of the conflict in Bosnia will have to take his history into account. Enhanced by maps, useful appendices, and a glossary, this should become the standard work on military operations in Central Bosnia and a useful case study of internal warfare and ethnic conflict.

Book The Ethical Dimensions of Global Change

Download or read book The Ethical Dimensions of Global Change written by Barry Holden and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are currently in a period of rapid global change that is of profound importance, but the nature of which is difficult to comprehend. A crucial element in any such comprehension must be an understanding of its ethical dimension since ethical ideas enter into the structure of international orders. Particular ethical questions are also, of course, of great intrinsic interest and importance. This book covers both aspects through an analysis of key concepts and issues.

Book The Nebi Yearbook 1998

Download or read book The Nebi Yearbook 1998 written by Lars Hedegaard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thorvald Stoltenberg Ambassador Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board Most of us have been overwhelmed by the speed and extent of the changes that have been taking place in Europe since the late 1980s. Over the span of a few years, we have witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union and the unification of Ger many. This process has had far-reaching implications for Northern Europe: the Baltic states have attained independence, and with the establishment of the Baltic Sea regional co-operation and the Barents co-operation, a new type of East-West relations has come into being. The process of change continues. Its latest manifestation is the agreement between Russia and NATO, and NATO and EU enlargement is expected to take place over the next few years. With such far-reaching transformations, we need to reflect on what is hap pening. We need a more coherent picture of the new situation in Northern Europe and of where we are heading. This Yearbook is an attempt to fulfil this need. I would like to thank the editors for taking this initiative, which has been long awaited by those of us who have been actively interested in the improved relations between the former East and the old West that have been made possible by the end of the Cold War - and particularly in the new opportunities for cross-border co-operation and integra tion in the North European and Baltic space.

Book Europe and America

Download or read book Europe and America written by John Peterson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conflict in Bosnia, disputes within the new World Trade Organizatiion and debates about NATO enlargement all illustrate a single point: no relationship is more important in determining the state of international relations than the alliance between Europe and America. Contrary to accepted wisdom, John Peterson argues that the end of the Cold War actually enhances the prospects for partnership between the United States and the European Union. Completely updated, this book offers a clear and penetrating analysis of the problems and opportunities facing the transatlantic alliance.

Book International Politics in Europe

Download or read book International Politics in Europe written by G. Wyn Rees and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout much of Europe the preoccupation with military security that dominated political thinking after the end of the Second World War has given way to an emphasis upon mutual interdependence. But what does this mean, both theoretically and practically, terms of a `new' agenda? The focus of this book is upon four main issues: * economic development * security * the environment * human rights These are of course not in themselves new issues, but during the period of the Cold War they were subordinated to the ideological division of the continent. Now they have emerged as decisive in the way in which Europe will develop. The authors examine the four issues in depth, and draw out the links between them. They also examine the various levels at which these problems exist - the level of the `system', of the state and of the individual. Thus it is possible for them to illustrate general issues with specific reference to local, national and Europe-wide political debates.
