Book Online Dating as A Strategic Game

Download or read book Online Dating as A Strategic Game written by Maurice Kwok-to Choi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a study using online ethnography as the major research method, this book explains why and how men in Hong Kong use QQ—an online instant messenger—to “chase” women in mainland China, especially in the neighboring city of Shenzhen. Chasing women through QQ is a reciprocal exchange process during which the resources to be exchanged in the interaction are not negotiated. Rather, the men provide resources to the women, hoping for rewards in return that are not guaranteed. This characteristic of the exchange makes men who chase women through QQ very strategic in their action. They try to maximize the rewards and minimize the costs by adopting myriad strategies, such as constructing an attractive online identity by strategic self-presentation. The role of emotions in the exchange process is also examined. Men learn the emotional norms through the online forum, but sometimes it is difficult for them to control their emotions; some men fall in love when they are not supposed to. As it happens, they have failed to calculate the costs and rewards rationally in that they may provide too many resources to the women without getting enough rewards in return. This book provides original insights into the thought processes, motivations, desires, anxieties and risks of Hong Kong men seeking short-term sexual relations with women on the mainland. These insights are highly relevant to our understanding of the quickly evolving use of social media, a phenomenon of worldwide importance and deep implications.

Book Strategic Staffing

Download or read book Strategic Staffing written by Jean Phillips and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formerly published by Chicago Business Press, now published by Sage Strategic Staffing, 4e prepares all current and future managers to take a strategic and modern approach to the identification, attraction, selection, deployment, and retention of talent. Organizations increasingly realize that their employees are the key to executing their business strategies, and the current competition for talent has made the identification and attraction of high-performing employees essential for companies to succeed in their marketplaces. The right employees give their organization a competitive advantage that sets it apart and drives its performance. In today’s business environment, a company’s ability to execute its strategy and maintain its competitive edge depends even more on the quality of its employees. And the quality of a company’s employees is directly affected by the quality of its recruiting and staffing systems. Because hiring managers are involved in the staffing process, hiring managers and human resources (HR) professionals need to be familiar with strategic staffing techniques. Over the past 10 years, advancing technology and the increased application of data analytics have changed the practices of sourcing, recruiting, and staffing. Strategic Staffing 4e is grounded in research, communicates practical and modern staffing concepts and the role of staffing in organizational performance, and is engaging to read. The new edition contains updates to many sections on the roles of technology and analytics and adds more focus to the discussion of ethics that was added to the fourth edition. New research findings were also incorporated, and many company examples were updated. The fifth edition of Strategic Staffing continues to present up-to-date staffing theories and practices in an interesting, engaging, and easy-to-read format.

Book Sex and the Sexual during People s Leisure and Tourism Experiences

Download or read book Sex and the Sexual during People s Leisure and Tourism Experiences written by Neil Carr and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex and the sexual have for far too long been consigned to the dark corners by social scientists in general and tourism and leisure scholars in particular. Sex and the Sexual During People’s Leisure and Tourism Experiences seeks to begin to rectify this situation by bringing the position and nature of sex and the sexual into the light of academic debate. As such, this book is designed to highlight cross-disciplinary emerging work on sex and the sexual in leisure and tourism and provide the readers with insights into this social realm. It encompasses a broad array of sex-related issues and tourism and leisure environments from across a variety of countries. The book should appeal to researchers and students across the humanities and social sciences both for the value of the research in its own right and the ability of it to be used as a lens through which to view the position of sex and the sexual as well as tourism and leisure in today's world. Overall, it is argued that sex and the sexual should play a part in the academic discourse, especially if we wish to describe what is actually happening out there as far as tourism and leisure are concerned.

Book Gender Sexuality and Power in Latin America since Independence

Download or read book Gender Sexuality and Power in Latin America since Independence written by William E. French and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2006-11-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring the original primary research of a number of leading scholars, this innovative volume integrates gender and sexuality into the main currents of historical interpretation concerning Latin America. The book argues that gender and sexuality—rather than simply supplementing existing explanations of political, social, cultural, and economic phenomena—are central to understanding these processes. Focusing on subjects as varied as murder, motherhood and the death penalty in early Republican Venezuela, dueling in Uruguay, midwifery in Brazil, youth culture in Mexico, and revolution in Nicaragua, contributors explore the many ways that gender and sexuality have been essential to the operation of power in Latin America over the last two hundred years. The linked questions of agency, identity, the body, and ethnicity are woven throughout their analysis. By analyzing a rich array of medical, criminological, juridical, social scientific, and human rights discourses throughout Latin America, the authors challenge students as well as scholars to reconsider our understanding of the past through the lenses of gender and sexuality. Making the case for the centrality of gender and sexuality to any study of political and social relations, this volume also will help chart the future direction of research in Latin American history since Independence.

Book The Evolution of Desire

Download or read book The Evolution of Desire written by David M. Buss and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “drop-dead shocker” (Washington Post Book World) that uses evolutionary psychology to explain human mating and the mysteries of love If we all want love, why is there so much conflict in our most cherished relationships? To answer this question, we must look into our evolutionary past, argues prominent psychologist David M. Buss. Based one of the largest studies of human mating ever undertaken, encompassing more than 10,000 people of all ages from thirty-seven cultures worldwide, The Evolution of Desire is the first work to present a unified theory of human mating behavior. Drawing on a wide range of examples of mating behavior — from lovebugs to elephant seals, from the Yanomamö tribe of Venezuela to online dating apps — Buss reveals what women want, what men want, and why their desires radically differ. Love has a central place in human sexual psychology, but conflict, competition, and manipulation also pervade human mating — something we must confront in order to control our own mating destiny. Updated to reflect the very latest scientific research on human mating, this definitive edition of this classic work of evolutionary psychology explains the powerful forces that shape our most intimate desires.
