Download or read book To Promote Peace written by Dennis L. Bark and published by Hoover Press. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharing the premise that an adequate, credible defense is the best guarantee of peace, sixteen distinguished foreign policy experts test the chances of peace by examining American foreign policy in To Promote Peace. Writing from the vantage point of the mid-1980s, these contributors approach a broad spectrum of the day's issues, developing fresh ideas and innovative policy approaches at every turn. Their essays—always challenging, clear, and incisive—furnish a realistic blueprint for peace in a world dominated by nuclear fantasies and cutting-edge technologies. Declaring that the Allies must bear their fair share of NATO's common defense, Melvyn Krauss argues the time has come to begin phasing out U.S. forces in Europe. Pointing out that compromised intelligence has squandered much of our technological advantage, Arnold Beichman demands that top priority be given to the establishment of an effective, sophisticated intelligence network. Showing the effects of dÉtente-inspired build-down of tactical nuclear weapons, H. Joachim MaÎtre explores a variety of weapons systems in achieving true mutual deterrence. From an analysis of the critical relationship between energy supply and peace to tough and well-reasoned predictions on what the future holds, To Promote Peace is not afraid to spark debate and seek new initiatives and direction. Its assessments consider global issues with more realism, more courage, and more certainty of the necessity of maintaining the United States as a forceful presence throughout the world.

Download or read book Strategic Choice and International Relations written by David A. Lake and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strategic-choice approach has a long pedigree in international relations. In an area often rent by competing methodologies, editors David A. Lake and Robert Powell take the best of accepted and contested knowledge among many theories. With the contributors to this volume, they offer a unifying perspective, which begins with a simple insight: students of international relations want to explain the choices actors make--whether these actors be states, parties, ethnic groups, companies, leaders, or individuals. This synthesis offers three new benefits: first, the strategic interaction of actors is the unit of analysis, rather than particular states or policies; second, these interactions are now usefully organized into analytic schemes, on which conceptual experiments may be based; and third, a set of methodological "bets" is then made about the most productive ways to analyze the interactions. Together, these elements allow the pragmatic application of theories that may apply to a myriad of particular cases, such as individuals protesting environmental degradation, governments seeking to control nuclear weapons, or the United Nations attempting to mobilize member states for international peacekeeping. Besides the editors, the six contributors to this book, all distinguished scholars of international relations, are Jeffry A. Frieden, James D. Morrow, Ronald Rogowski, Peter Gourevitch, Miles Kahler, and Arthur A. Stein. Their work is an invaluable introduction for scholars and students of international relations, economists, and government decision-makers.

Download or read book Making Money with Option Strategies written by Michael C. Thomsett and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Money With Option Strategies is a practical, down-to-earth guide that introduces and fully explains an action plan to reduce risk in any stock portfolio. There are many options books available already, and they fall into two major categories: basic primers limited to explaining the terminology and market of options; and more advanced books discussing theory and pricing models of options. None of these books addresses the largest audience of all—those who know the basics but are not interested in theories and pricing models. They want clear, practical ways to apply these principles to make money and reduce their risks. Making Money With Option Strategies is designed for this market. Michael has traded options since the mid-1970s and is the best-selling options author in the United States. His best-selling Getting Started in Options, a beginner’s book now in its ninth edition, has sold more than 300,000 copies since 1986. Many people view options as exotic, complex, and high-risk beasts. They are not. If your portfolio risk keeps you up at night, adding carefully designed option strategies to hedge risks will help you get a good night’s sleep.

Download or read book Real Options and Corporate Strategy written by Christian Berner and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2000-03-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Every investment, for example new facilities, new products, or strategic partnerships is driven by the pursuit of creating values . Major changes are going on in the valuation of investments. Although the classic shareholder value concept is still a valuable source for identification of value drivers of strategic management, it needs to be extended in terms of its ability to evaluate long-term investment choices. Far too long capital budgeting has only been considered under aspects of its contribution to an overall added economic value rather than focusing on a firm s resources. Recent research emphasized the strategic value of resources leading to formulate the approach of a resource-based view of a firm s activities. Usually management tries to capture future development with static methods of capital budgeting, i.e. future cash-flows are discounted with a fixed risk-adjusted discount rate. However, the finding of present values and capitalized values could produce pitfalls in investment decisions. Strategic investment decisions are often characterized by a wide range of possibilities to react flexibly to the changing business environment. This area of tolerance in investment decisions could not be captured with traditional instruments of investment evaluation. In the 1970s, the discounted-cash-flow analysis (DCF) emerged and proved its practicability. This method assumes a now or never approach in undertaking a project. Some authors suggest adding the theory of option prices to investment decisions, as in the 1970s and the 1980s developments in the valuation of capital-investment opportunities based on option pricing revolutionized capital budgeting. Option pricing allows adaptation and revision of future decisions in order to capture managerial flexibility and to finally capitalize on any possible future development. To incorporate these real options means to limit losses and offers a vital contribution to long-term corporate success, especially in those marketplaces characterized by uncertainty and rapid change. This method also explains the value of waiting for the initial project and considers its value in comparison to the opportunity costs of waiting. These costs are dictated by the behavior of competitors and loss of cash-flow streams from the project. Incorporating this method could possibly lead to a better understanding of the importance of resource allocation, the value of strategic investments and [...]
