Book Strategic Intent

Download or read book Strategic Intent written by Gary Hamel and published by Harvard Business Review Press. This book was released on 2010-06-21 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this McKinsey Award-winning article, first published in May 1989, Gary Hamel and C.K. Prahalad explain that Western companies have wasted too much time and energy replicating the cost and quality advantages their global competitors already experience. Canon and other world-class competitors have taken a different approach to strategy: one of strategic intent. They begin with a goal that exceeds the company's present grasp and existing resources: "Beat Xerox"; "encircle Caterpillar." Then they rally the organization to close the gap by setting challenges that focus employees' efforts in the near to medium term: "Build a personal copier to sell for $1,000"; "cut product development time by 75%." Year after year, they emphasize competitive innovation—building a portfolio of competitive advantages; searching markets for "loose bricks" that rivals have left underdefended; changing the terms of competitive engagement to avoid playing by the leader's rules. The result is a global leadership position and an approach to competition that has reduced larger, stronger Western rivals to playing an endless game of catch-up.

Book Winning the Uncertainty Game

Download or read book Winning the Uncertainty Game written by Daniel F. Oriesek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the challenges that emerge for organizations from an ever faster changing world. While useful at their time, several management tools, including classic strategic planning processes, will no longer suffice to address these challenges in a timely and comprehensive fashion. While individual management tools are still valid to solve specific problems, they need to be employed based on a clear understanding of what the greater challenge is and how they need to be combined and prioritized with other approaches. In order to do so, companies can apply the clarity of thinking from the military with regard to which leadership level is responsible for what and how these levels need to interact in order to produce a single aligned response to an outside opportunity or threat. Finally, the tool of business wargaming, while known for some time, proves to be an ideal approach to quickly and effectively bring all leadership levels together, align them around a common objective and lay the groundwork for effective implementation of targeted responses that will keep the organization competitive and in the game for the long run. The book offers a comprehensive introduction to business wargaming, including a historical account, a classification of different types of games and a number of specific real-world examples. This book is targeted at practicing managers dealing with the aforementioned challenges, as well as for students of business and strategy at every level.

Book Understanding Business Strategy

Download or read book Understanding Business Strategy written by Lourdesamy Iruthayasamy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-06 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book cuts through the strategy verbiage to get to the fundamentals of business strategy—its meaning, formulation, and implementation. Challenges to understanding strategy are examined, including institutions and national culture. Strategy theories are not just explained but assessed in terms of their validity, limitations, and applicability across countries, cultures, and organisations. The thinking and works of major strategists like Ohmae, Mintzberg, Porter, Rumelt, Barney, Prahalad, Hamel, Peng, Kim, and Mauborgne are reviewed in the context of strategic thinking, strategy formulation, and strategy implementation. The confusion and consensus in strategy are highlighted. While not prescriptive in terms of telling the corporate leader how to formulate strategy, for there is no one best strategy or one best way to formulate strategy, the book does identify broad approaches to corporate strategy formulation and implementation and the underlying principles. To this extent, corporate leaders and students and instructors of business and management will find the book informative and instructive.

Book Business Policy and Strategic Management

Download or read book Business Policy and Strategic Management written by Elisha Stephens & Brice Martin and published by Scientific e-Resources. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The knowledge of business policy and techniques of strategic management is the need of the hour to prospective business managers. The present competitive environment has brought several drastic changes in policy making and strategic management. Hence, there is necessity of theoretical understanding about the business policy as well as strategic management. Businesses need to implement sound strategies to succeed. Those strategies form part of an overall management and business policy that guides the business in connecting with customers, generating profits and managing resources. The related concepts of strategic management and business policy are keys to help small business owners manage their responsibilities and set clear objectives. Strategic management represents a theoretical concept first introduced by Peter Drucker in the mid-20th century. The idea behind strategic management is that organizations will be better equipped to meet their goals and objectives if the owners and managers adopt a clear business philosophy. For many businesses, that philosophy will be to increase their share of the market. For others, it might be about making a difference in the community or about developing new products. Sometimes, a combination of motives drives the management's strategy. In any case, strategic management helps the business to keep its sights set on what matters most and to not get distracted by ancillary concerns. Strategic management is the art and science of formulating, implementing and evaluating cross-functional decisions that will enable an organization to achieve its objectives. It is the process of specifying the organization's objectives, developing policies and plans to achieve these objectives, and allocating resources to implement the policies and plans to achieve the organization's objectives. Strategic management, therefore, combines the activities of the various functional areas of a business to achieve organizational objectives. This book is designed to support and enhance both learning and teaching. An important aspect of the style adopted for this book is the use of exhibits, presenting a vast gamut of information regarding special theoretical matter.
