Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited lectures and seminars presented at the Banff Summer Institute on Particles and Fields held at the Banff Center in Banff, Canada,from 25 August to 3 September, 1977. The town is situated in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, and the observant reader may notice references in this volume to the bears which roam near the town. The subject matter of the school was recent advances in particle physics and field theory. Lectures were given on such topics as extended objects, lattice gauge theories, quantum chromodynamics and Reggeon field theory. Experimental reviews were given of recent work in charmed particle and neutrino physics. Summaries of the theoretical implications of these experiments were also given. The format of the talks included eight lecture series (of three to four hours each) given by Profs. Abarbanel, Appelquist, Feldman, Gilman, 't Hooft, Jackiw, Mann and Weinstein, seven one-hour seminars given by Profs. Caianiello, Fujii, Johnson, Lam, Phillips, Sherry and Tze, and several short contributed seminars (which do not appear in this volume). There were also small informal seminar groups held at the Center and, we hope, many physics conversations on the hiking trails where most of the participants spent their afternoons. Not included in these proceedings are the banquet speeches by E. Caianiello and S. D. Drell, as well as (for copyright reasons) a seminar by K. Johnson.

Book excerpt: In this revision: The electric charge of a subatomic particle is originated from its Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM). The electron mass is a magnitude that expresses quantitatively the square of its magnetic flux quantum. The proton, the neutron and all baryons consist of three energy levels on which the quarks are orbiting. The third energy level is equivalent to 80.5 Gev; it plays a role at decaying process through the weak force. The quark's OAM is a third or two thirds of the reduced Planck constant. The proton's missing spin is resolved by quarks OAM contribution. The electron is a bound state composition of a negative Pion and an electron Neutrino. The theory predicts a neutral boson of 160Gev (alongside to W+ boson from a 240Gev decaying particle). The 2007 data analysis at CDF (Tevatron) showed this possibility. Apparently this was a valid finding despite the final results.The 240Gev particle can also decay to two W+ and one W- Bosons instead of 160Gev Boson which makes it hard to be detected.

Book excerpt: This year, Orbis Scientiae 1976, dedicated to the Bicentennial of the United States of America, was devoted entirely to recent developments in high energy physics. These proceedings contain nearly all of the papers presented at Orbis, held at the Center for Theoretical Studies, University of Miami, during January 19-22, 1976. The organization of Orbis this year was due mainly to the moderators of the sessions, principally Sydney Meshkov, Murray Gell-Mann, Yoichiro Nambu, Glennys Farrar, Fred Zachariasen and Behram Kursunoglu, who was also chairman of the conference. The coherence of the various sessions is due to their efforts, and special thanks are due to Sydney Meshkov who was responsible for coor dinating many of the efforts of the moderators and for including essentially all of the frontier developments in high energy physics. Because of the number of papers and their integrated length, it has been necessary to divide these proceedings into two volumes. An effort has been made to divide the material in the two volumes into fundamental questions (including the appearance of magnetic charge in particle physics) and recent high energy results and attendant ppenomenology. These volumes were prepared by Mrs. Helga Billings, Mrs. Elva Brady and Ms. Yvonne Leber, and their dedication and skill are gratefully acknowledged. The origin of matter is not fully understood, and the CMB has grown into a powerful tool to inv- tigate the early eras of the universe. The progress of cosmological observations has now led to a 'standard' slow-roll in?ation model, which accounts quantitatively for many - served features of the universe. As the lectures will show, it still leaves large unchartered areas, and the underlying particle physics aspects are yettobeelucidated.
