Book Straightening Out the Corners

Download or read book Straightening Out the Corners written by Philippe Vermès and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Records the biker culture in over 77 duotones." --Publishers Weekly. "French art photographer Philippe Vermes gives the subject a most dignified presentation...A gravity & seriousness usually absent from photographs of bikers." --Photo District News. Philippe Vermes saw a part of America behind the leather, black T-shirts, & tatoos of the bikers. His interest led him to Sturgis, South Dakota, for the annual Black Hills Motor Classic to capture that culture in photographs. There, he made black & white portraits of bikers from all walks of life who shared one common passion: the love of motorcycles. One of the portraits that Vermes made was of the late Malcolm S. Forbes, noted biker, balloonist, & publisher. Mr. Forbes was so impressed with the work that he authored a one page preface for the book. The body of work also impressed noted photo art critic, A.D. Coleman. Upon reviewing a preliminary selection of the photographs, Mr. Coleman volunteered to write the essay to accompany these photographs. This book is the result of that experience.

Book excerpt: Amphibian Diaries is a Field Guide for Truth-Seekers. A little green stowaway, named BP, in the author’s baggage teaches six principles for recognizing Truth. These principles enable genuine, interpersonal dialogue while searching for personal significance. The reader is invited to join the LifeBet, inspired by the philosophy of Blaise Pascal, which states that all of us live our lives by a bet we have made--there is a God, or there is no God. LifeBet participants commit to seven discussions about foundational life issues: Origin, Meaning, Morality, and Destiny. BP and the author argue that these high-level conversations, while difficult, are essential. They are made practical and effective with SEARCH, an acronym for the six principles: We all have a Soul with a hole, a need to be fulfilled by a significant and secure life. We have an intrinsic Expectation of satisfaction that we cling to by faith. We express our beliefs in terms of Answers to life’s ultimate and necessary questions: Origin, Meaning, Destiny, and Morality. Our Reason to believe is always a matter of logical, empirical, and practical variables. Our beliefs are an expression of our view of the Correspondence between our ideas about reality and reality itself. Intrapersonal, interpersonal, and inspirational Humility is required for the entire conversation Life and God. Readers have access to a website with concise and insightful support materials as well as connection for interaction with the author and others: www.AmphibianDiaries.com. The book, the website, and the concept are all designed to move the reader in the direction of hope in a gentle and respectful manner. It presumes that if people genuinely seek Truth they will find themselves in the freedom of God’s love.

His novels are written in a simple, highly readable style, with clearly delineated plots. An enduring theme of his novels is the dignity of work, spanning all classes. His famous novel ‘On the Beach’ (1957) reflects his pessimism for humanity in the atomic age, while ‘A Town like Alice’ (1950) tackles themes of emigration and racism, as the heroine seeks economic prosperity in a disadvantaged outback community. Book excerpt: The Breaking Wave is one of Nevil Shute’s most poignant and psychologically suspenseful novels, set in the years just after World War II. Sidelined by a wartime injury, fighter pilot Alan Duncan reluctantly returns to his parents' remote sheep station in Australia to take the place of his brother Bill, who died a hero in the war. But his homecoming is marred by the suicide of his parents' parlormaid, of whom they were very fond. Alan soon realizes that the dead young woman is not the person she pretended to be. Upon discovering that she had served in the Royal Navy and participated along with his brother in the secret build-up to the Normandy invasion, Alan sets out to piece together the tragic events and the lonely burden of guilt that unravelled one woman’s life. In the process of finding the answer to the mystery, he realizes how much he had in common with this woman he never knew and how “a war can go on killing people long after it's all over.”

Book The Suffragette Derby

Download or read book The Suffragette Derby written by Michael Tanner and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Wednesday 4 June 1913, fledgling newsreel cameras captured just over two-and-a-half minutes of neverto-be-forgotten British social and sporting history. The 250,000 people thronging Epsom Downs carried with them a quartet of combustible elements: a fanatical, publicity-hungry suffragette; a scapegoat for the Titanic disaster and the pillar of the Establishment who bore him a personal grudge; a pair of feuding jockeys at odds over money and glory; and, finally, at the heart of the action, two thoroughbred horses - one a vicious savage and one the consummate equine athlete. Taken together, this was a recipe for the most notorious horse race in British history. One hundred years on, this particular Derby Day is remembered for two reasons: the fatal intervention of Emily Davison, a militant suffragette who brought down the King's runner, and the controversial disqualification of Bower Ismay's horse Craganour on the grounds of rough riding - the first and only time a Derby-winner has forfeited its title for this reason. The sensation of Davison's questionable interference in the name of suffrage has overshadowed the outrage of Craganour's disqualification and the intricate reasons behind it. Now, with a view to allowing this scandal the attention it deserves, Michael Tanner replays the most dramatic day in Turf history - and finally uncovers the truth of the Suffragette Derby.
