Book excerpt: “At last a book has been written that forensically examines how the British Armed Forces fought its way through Normandy . . . utterly absorbing.” —James Holland, bestselling author of Brothers in Arms Stout Hearts is a book which offers an entirely new perspective on the British Army in Normandy. This fresh study explores the anatomy of war through the Army’s operations in the summer of 1944, informing and entertaining the general nonfiction reader as well as students of military history. There have been so many books written on Normandy that the publication of another one might appear superfluous. However most books have focused on narrating the conduct of the battle, describing the factors that influenced its outcome, or debating the relative merits of the armies and their generals. What was missing from the existing body of work on Normandy specifically and the Second World War generally is a book that explains how an army actually operates in war and what it was like for those involved; Stout Hearts fills this gap. Stout Hearts is essential reading for those who wish to understand the “mechanics” of battle. How does an Army care for its wounded? How do combat engineers cross obstacles? How do tanks fight? How do Air and Naval Forces support the Army? But to understand what makes an Army “tick” you must also understand its people. Therefore explanations of tactics and techniques are not only well illustrated with excellent photographs and high quality maps but also effectively combined with relevant accounts from the combatants themselves. These dramatic stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things are the strength of the book, bringing the campaign to life and entertaining the reader.

Book The Prairies and the Pampas

Download or read book The Prairies and the Pampas written by and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1987-09 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Argentine and Canadian wheat economies, starting from very similar positions in the late nineteenth century, had diverged startlingly by 1930. In wheat production and export Argentina had stagnated and declined, while Canada had surged to a position of world leadership. This book explains how Canada had outpaced Argentina, a country with better growing conditions and a much shorter haul to port. The author finds the explanation in how differing government policies affected the paths the Canadian and Argentine wheat economies took. The author's investigations center on several key questions: In what ways did Canadian and Argentine policy makers and wheat growers attempt to improve their competitive positions by introducing efficient marketing systems, research, and agricultural education? How responsive were the two political systems to questions of land tenure, the role of immigrants, and political representation in the wheat regions? In sum, how did quite different views on the role of the state affect the outcome? The book is in three parts. The first provides a basic political and economic overview of Argentine and Canadian history between 1880 and 1930. The second part analyzes and compares the two countries' basic agricultural development policies. In the third part the focus moves away from a topical emphasis and shifts to an analysis of major agricultural policy issues in the two countries. The concluding chapter presents some final thoughts on the different paths of agrarian development in the two countries.

Book The Lanny Budd Novels Volume Two

Download or read book The Lanny Budd Novels Volume Two written by Upton Sinclair and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 2185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books four through six in the Pulitzer Prize–winning series of historical novels about an international spy in the first half of the twentieth century. An ambitious and entertaining mix of history, adventure, and romance, Upton Sinclair’s Pulitzer Prize–winning Lanny Budd novels are a testament to the breathtaking scope of the author’s vision and his singular talents as a storyteller. “Few works of fiction are more fun to read; fewer still make history half as clear, or as human” (Time). In these three novels, as the threat of Nazism grows in the 1930s, Lanny progresses from international art dealer to international spy. Wide Is the Gate: When his arms dealer father strikes a business agreement with Hermann Göring, Lanny uses the opportunity and his art world reputation to move easily among the Nazi high command and gather valuable information he can transmit back to those who are dedicated to the destruction of Nazism and Fascism. He’s playing a dangerous—albeit necessary—game, which will carry him from Germany to Spain on a life-and-death mission on the eve of the Spanish Civil War. The Presidential Agent: In 1937, Lanny’s boss from the Paris Peace Conference—now one of Roosevelt’s top advisors—connects him to the president. Appointed Presidential Agent 103, he embarks on a secret assignment that takes him back into the Third Reich as the Allied powers prepare to cede Czechoslovakia to Adolf Hitler in a futile attempt to avoid war. But Lanny’s motivations are not just political: The woman he loves has fallen into the brutal hands of the Gestapo, and Lanny will risk everything to save her. Dragon Harvest: Lanny has earned the trust of Adolf Hitler and his inner circle, who are convinced the American art dealer is a “true believer” committed to their Fascist cause. But when Roosevelt’s secret agent learns of the Führer’s plans for conquest, his dire warnings to Neville Chamberlain and other reluctant European leaders fall on deaf ears. The bitter seeds sown decades earlier with the Treaty of Versailles are now bearing fruit, and there will be no stopping the Nazi war machine as it rolls relentlessly on toward Paris.
