Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful volume makes one of history's most extraordinary achievements in book design and printing available in an inexpensive paperback edition. The Story of the Glittering Plain, a richly evocative medieval tale of knightly adventure written by the Victorian poet and artist William Morris, was the first publication of Morris' newly founded Kelmscott Press; its second (1894) edition, reprinted here, was one of the most influential Kelmscott books. The sumptuous look and feel of the book, its exemplary presswork and fine paper, and scrupulous attention to every detail combined to create a sensation among printers and collectors. The Story of the Glittering Plain was one of a small group of Morris' masterpieces that were to revolutionize the art of printing and transform it from a routine trade into high art. In addition to the elegant typography, which Morris based on fonts by great fifteenth-century German printers, the book features rich ornaments and initials designed by Morris as well as 23 superb woodcuts by noted artist Walter Crane. The result is a chivalrous tale that is both an aesthetic and a heroic adventure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a quantitative point of view the achievement of the Kelmscott Press may not seem impressive: between 1891 and 1898 it produced fifty-two books and a set of specimen pages for another book. Yet each was remarkably beautiful. Designed by William Morris, printed on hand-presses, ornamented with initials and borders by Morris, and illustrated often by Edward Burne-Jones, these few Kelmscott Press books are famous everywhere today. Why they have so profoundly affected twentieth-century theories of book design and what cultural significance the founding of the Kelmscott Press played are some of the questions the author considers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ." . . the stories we have been telling deal with living men supposed to be influencing living men. When the dead are alleged to exercise a similar power, we have to suppose that some consciousness survives the grave, and manifests itself by causing hallucinations among the living. Instances of this have already been given in "The Ghost and the Portrait," "The Bright Scar" and "Riding Home after Mess." These were adduced as examples of veracity in hallucinations. Each appearance gave information to the seer which he did not previously possess. In the first case, the lady who saw the soldier and the suppliant did not know of their previous existence and melancholy adventure. In the second, the brother did not know that his dead sister's face had been scratched. In the third, the observer did not know that Lieutenant B. had grown a beard and acquired a bay pony with black mane and tail. But though the appearances were veracious, they were purposeless, and again, as in each case the information existed in living minds, it may have been wired on from them. . . ."
