Book Story of an Old Town

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of an Old Town: With Reminiscences of Early Nebraska and Biographies of Pioneers; A Narrative Truth Describing the Birth of Nebraska, and Its Progress, of Its Oldest Towns, and Its First Settlers This work as now presented to the public has been arduous and painstaking, its object being to array a set of facts without deviation from the truth, portraying a part of the early history of Nebraska and its inhabitants. The task has been laborious as well as tedious, commanding the most minute research and consuming many years. To Robert W. Furnas, Geo. W. Doane, Capt. Silas T. Leaming, Henry Fontenelle, A. B. Fuller, Christopher C. Dunn, Dr. J. B. Whittier, John Lewis, James Ashley, and a host of others, the author is deeply indebted for the valuable assistance rendered. Without their co-operation the work would have been impossible. Entering Nebraska as a vast wilderness we leave it as one of the prosperous states of the union; certainly a most wonderful transformation. In picturing this great change we not only present general characteristics but personal, thereby making it of interest to the individual as well as the public. The author is positive in his statement that within this book historical events will be found of our state that no other book of like kind contains. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1916, this Book of Nebraska Pioneer Reminiscences was issued by the Daughters of the American Revolution of Nebraska, and "dedicated to the daring, courageous, and intrepid men and women--the advance guard of our progress--who, carrying the torch of civilization, had a vision of the possibilities which now have become realities. To those who answered the call of the unknown we owe the duty of preserving the record of their adventures upon the vast prairies of 'Nebraska the Mother of States. "Reminiscence, recollection, personal experience--simple, true stories--this is the foundation of History. Rapidly the pioneer story-tellers are passing beyond recall, and the real story of the beginning of our great commonwealth must be told now. The memories of those pioneers, of their deeds of self-sacrifice and devotion, of their ideals which are our inheritance, will inculcate patriotism in the children of the future; for they should realize the courage that subdued the wilderness. And "lest we forget," the heritage of this past is a sacred trust to the Daughters of the American Revolution of Nebraska."True Stories of Nebraska Pioneers: Illustrated and Annotated is a book of selections from COLLECTION OF NEBRASKA PIONEER REMINISCENCES, updated with photographs, biographies, and obituaries of many of the pioneers, and published by Knowledge Keepers. It is our desire to bring back to print as many works of our original history as possible into American homes for the preservation of the stories of our ancestors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A wonderful connecting of two women writers' stories more than a century apart.' Julia Kuehn, The University of Hong Kong The first-ever biography of the pioneering female journalist who fought to bring Japanese cherry trees to Washington, DC Every age has strong, independent women who defy the gender conventions of their era to follow their hearts and minds. Eliza Scidmore was one such maverick. Born on the American frontier just before the Civil War, she rose from modest beginnings to become a journalist who roamed far and wide writing about distant places for readers back home. By her mid-20s she had visited more places than most people would see in a lifetime. By the end of the nineteenth century, her travels were so legendary she was introduced at a meeting in London as “Miss Scidmore, of everywhere.” In what has become her best-known legacy, Scidmore carried home from Japan a big idea that helped shape the face of modern Washington: she urged the city's park officials to plant Japanese cherry trees on a reclaimed mud bank-today's Potomac Park. Though they rebuffed her suggestion several times, she finally got her way nearly three decades later thanks to the support of First Lady Helen Taft. Scidmore was a “Forrest Gump” of her day who bore witness to many important events and rubbed elbows with famous people, from John Muir and Alexander Graham Bell to U.S presidents and Japanese leaders. She helped popularize Alaska tourism during the birth of the cruise industry, and educated readers about Japan and other places in the Far East at a time of expanding U.S. interests across the Pacific. At the early National Geographic, she made a lasting mark as the first woman to serve on its board and to publish photographs in the magazine. Around the same time, she also played an activist role in the burgeoning U.S. conservation movement. Her published work includes books on Alaska, Japan, Java, China, and India; a novel based on the Russo-Japanese War; and about 800 articles in U.S. newspapers and magazines. Deeply researched and briskly written, this first-ever biography of Scidmore draws heavily on her own writings to follow major events of a half-century as seen through the eyes of a remarkable woman who was far ahead of her time.
