It was first published on September 30, 1898, a year to the day after her death from tuberculosis at the age of 24, on September 30, 1897. The book was a single volume formed from three distinct manuscripts - manuscripts of different length, written at different times, addressed to different people, and differing from one another in character. The work of unifying these disparate manuscripts was carried out by Pauline, the sister of Thrse. It was initially published with a limited audience in mind, the Carmelite convents and certain religious personalities, and just 2000 copies of the 475 page book were printed. It quickly became a publishing phenomenon however and Sister Thrse of the Child Jesus was canonised in 1925.------------------------------------------------------------St. Dismas Catholic Classic editions are all new translations, filled with numerous vivid illustrations and are offered at very reasonable prices in order to make these books readily available to the faithful.

Download or read book Story of a Soul The Autobiography of St Therese of Lisieux The Authorized English Translation of Th r se s Original Unaltered Manuscripts written by St. Thérèse of Lisieux (the Little Flower) and published by ICS Publications. This book was released on 2013-09-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated from the critical edition by John Clarke, OCD, 3rd ed. (1997). Includes Bibliography, general Index, and 11 photos. Two and a half years before her death in 1897 at the age of 24, as Thérèse Martin began writing down her childhood memories at the request of her blood sisters in the Lisieux Carmel, few could have guessed the eventual outcome. Yet this "story of my soul," first published in 1898 in a highly edited version, quickly became a modern spiritual classic, read by millions and translated into dozens of languages around the world. Decades later, in response to growing requests from scholars and devotees of the Saint, a facsimile edition of the manuscripts appeared, along with more popular French editions of what the Saint had actually written. Here, expressed with all of Thérèse's original spontaneity and fervor, we rediscover the great themes of her spirituality: confidence and love, the "little way," abandonment to God's merciful love, and her "mission" in the church and world today. Father John Clarke's acclaimed translation, first published in 1975 and now accepted as the standard throughout the English-speaking world, is a faithful and unaffected rendering of Thérèse's own words, from the original manuscripts. This new edition, prepared for the centenary of the Saint's death, includes a select bibliography of recent works in English on Thérèse, along with a new referencing system now widely used in studies of her doctrine.

Though she was only twenty-four years old when she died, her writings have had tremendous impact, making her one of the most popular spiritual writers in the twentieth century. A hundred years after her death in 1897, millions of copies have spread throughout the world and it has been translated into more than fifty languages. The reason for the continued success of her autobiography is, quite simply, that it is unlike any work of devotion and spiritual insight ever written. Once it is read, it cannot be forgotten. Its appeal across cultures and generations has been extensive, moving both peasants and popes, men and women, young and old—people of every kind of intelligence and education succumb to its spell. Yet is not a conventional work of religious devotion; instead, it is in many ways a supernatural book. In the words of Pope Pius XI, Saint Therese "attained the knowledge of supernatural things in such abundant measure that she was able to point out the sure way of salvation to others," and it is especially in The Story of a Soul that she has pointed out this sure way to the generations that have followed her. As Therese herself said of this book just prior to her death, "What I have written will do a lot of good. It will make the kindness of God better known."

Book excerpt: Born Marie Françoise-Therese Martin, Saint Therese of Lisieux in her twenty-four short years, through her simple and practical approach to spiritual life, left one of the most lasting impressions upon the Catholic world. In the view of Pope Saint Pius X, she was the greatest saint of modern times, and along with Saint Francis of Assisi, remains to this day as one of the popular saints in the history of the church. Contained here is her autobiography, in the words of Francis Cardinal Bourne, "It is the old story of simplicity in God's service, of the perfect accomplishment of small recurring duties, of trustful confidence in Him who made and has redeemed and sanctified us. Humility, self-effacement, obedience, hiddenness, unfaltering charity, with all the self-control and constant effort that they imply, are written on every page of the history of this little Saint. And, as we turn its pages, the lesson is borne in upon our souls that there is no surer nor safer way of pleasing Our Father Who is in Heaven than by remaining ever as little children in His sight." This edition of "The Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of Saint Therese of Lisieux" is printed on a premium acid-free paper.

Book excerpt: It may seem that holiness is too far away for ordinary people. But one saint shows us that our littleness is actually the way to holiness. Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Thérèse of Lisieux details the innermost thoughts of a young, humble Carmelite nun who became a Doctor of the Church through her teachings called "the little way." This saint has taught generations of Catholics that embracing our littleness with unbounded confidence in God's love can be a path to sainthood. Story of a Soul, the third book in Ascension's Catholic Classics series, uses the only full English translation of this key work of Catholic tradition. Exploring topics such as confidence in God's mercy, trust, and God's love for his children, this text draws readers ever closer to God through St. Thérèse's thoughts and story on her own path to sainthood. This special version of Story of the Soul includes: -Expert commentary from Fr. Jacob Bertrand Janczyk, O.P. and Anne-Elisabeth Giuliani, a consecrated woman, at the beginning of each chapter to make the text more approachable -25 photos of St. Thérèse and her life -Appendices of St. Thérèse's explanation of her coat of arms, the letter she carried on her heart, and the act of oblation of merciful love. -An insert of exclusive sacred art depicting St. Thérèse from Ascension's Sacred Art Collection of Holy Men and Women by Tianna Williams -A foreword by Cardinal Anders Arborelius, O.C.D. -A leatherlike cover, foil stamping, and a place-holding ribbon This beautiful book draws Catholics into a deeper relationship with God in their pursuit of holiness through the honesty, authenticity, and wisdom of one of the Church's greatest saints. Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Catholic Classics Edition is the version read in season 3 of the Catholic Classics podcast.

Download or read book The Story of a Soul The Autobiography of St Th r se of Lisieux written by Thérèse Martinof Lisieux and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a memoir of Thérèse of Lisieux, a French Catholic Discalced Carmelite nun. Her blood sisters were also nuns and they insisted she should write a memoir two years before her death at the age of 24. The book contains her childhood memories from the tragedy of the loss of her mother and her childhood nervous fits to finding peace in the convent. To a large extent the book deals with her spiritual search and describes her thoughts, emotions and beliefs she developed during her service. In the last eighteen month of her life, Therese fell into a crisis of belief, when she was tormented by the doubts, which he had to overcome. Suffering a severe form of tuberculosis, Therese perceived this illness as a one of her last examinations of faith and transformed her pain and suffering into the feeling of happiness based on her faith in salvation. This memoir became a very influential book on spirituality, which made Therese famous beyond the borders of France and remains an important piece of spiritual literature today.
