Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Steppe He seemed utterly unconscious of the cold blasts of: the wind that whipped open his gypsy cloak, exposing and lashing unmercifully his hairy bronze-colored chest. Turning toward me his free, strong and handsome face from his recumbent post ure, he thoughtfully puffed away at his big pipe, blowing thick clouds of smoke from his mouth and nostrils. His motionless eyes were fixed beyond me upon the darkness that stretched endlessly over the death-like silence of the steppe. He talked to me without interruption, making no motion whatsoever to shield himself against the pitiless bull'eting of the storm. And so you are joining us? That's fine! You have chosen a Splendid course, Falcon. We all have to meet our fate. Go about and see the world, and when you have seen enough, lie down and die and that's all! This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anima Vilis a Tale of the Great Siberian Steppe From the natural condition of things, all questions touching either directly, or indirectly, on the subject of existence in Russia, have for some time past created so much interest, that we cannot follow too closely anything that will help us to a better knowledge and understanding of the Empire of the Czar. For years we have hurled all kinds of anathemas at the Russian nation on account of the cruelties practised on Siberian prisoners; we have abused her lack of liberty, her tyranny, etc. Europeans, however, have formed their opinions of Russia from the "cannibalistic newspaper articles," as Prince Wolkonsky has very rightly designated them in the preface to his lectures on Russian Literature. In 1888, I went to Russia with my friend, Count Nicolas Potocki. As soon as my project was made known, many of my friends inundated me with advice of various kinds. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ivan Turgenieff's Spring Floods, and a Lear of the Steppe Never yet had he experienced such utter weariness, morally or physically. He had spent the whole of that evening in the society of agreeable and educated people; some of the women were pretty, almost all the men were distinguished for their intellect and talents; he, himself, had spoken well, if not brilliantly; yet never had that medium vitae, already experienced by the Romans - that aversion from life - taken such strong hold of him before. Had he been some years younger, he would have wept tears of anguish, lonesomeness, and irritability, for his heart was full of bitterness. A heavy gloom encircled him like a dark autumnal night, and he could find no way out of this darkness and bitterness. The only remedy for such a gloomy state of mind was sleep, but that solace he felt was denied him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Russia: From the White Sea to the Siberian Steppe Other writers with abler pens have described certain aspects of Russian life, but I am certain that none ever approached the task with more sincere pleasure than I. If at moments I have been critical, then I would say that criticism based upon careful consideration of facts and conditions is, in itself, a hall-mark of appreciation. For it is so much easier to accept everything without comment than to accept certain things and object to others. There is much Russia can learn from us, but I am not certain that it counterbalances in the scales the measure of what we can learn from Russia. Book Russian Wonder Tales

Download or read book Russian Wonder Tales written by Post Wheeler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Wonder Tales: With a Foreword on the Russian Skazki These older meanings, for the teller, vanished many centuries ago. The only things the skazki picture that are common to Russian country life today are those things which in Russia never change - the Wide, wind swept steppe and dense forest, the love of animal life and the comradeship of the horse, the dread and terror of the long winter cold, and the passionate welcome given to the springtime sun. Whatever else they may tell the student is in a tongue now unintelligible to the peasant, who has least of all been aware that, in these centuries old repetitions there have been handed down to a new era pictures indelible, though blurred and indistinct, of an ancient age, of times, customs, religion and deities no longer his own. Download or read book Steppes written by Michael Bone and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steppes—semi-arid biomes dominated by forbs, grasses, and grass-like species, and characterized by extremes of cold and heat—occupy enormous areas on four continents. Yet these ecosystems are among the least studied on our planet. Given that the birth and evolution of human beings have been so intimately interwoven with steppe regions, it is amazing that so few attempts have been made to compare and quantify the features of these regions. In this ground-breaking volume, five leading voices in horticulture—all staff members of Denver Botanic Gardens—examine the plants, climate, geology, and geography of the world’s steppes: central Asia, central and intermountain North America, Patagonia, and South Africa. Drawing upon their first-hand experience, the writers illuminate the distinctive features of each region, with a particular emphasis on the striking similarities between their floras. Each chapter includes a primer of species of horticultural interest—a rich resource for readers with an interest in steppe plants.

  • Release : 2019-05-03

Download or read book The Steppe and the Sea written by Thomas T. Allsen and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1221, in what we now call Turkmenistan, a captive held by Mongol soldiers confessed that she had swallowed her pearls in order to safeguard them. She was immediately executed and eviscerated. On finding several pearls, Chinggis Qan (Genghis Khan) ordered that they cut open every slain person on the battlefield. Pearls, valued for aesthetic, economic, religious, and political reasons, were the ultimate luxury good of the Middle Ages, and the Chingissid imperium, the largest contiguous land empire in history, was their unmatched collector, promoter, and conveyor. Thomas T. Allsen examines the importance of pearls, as luxury good and political investment, in the Mongolian empire—from its origin in 1206, through its unprecedented expansion, to its division and decline in 1370—in order to track the varied cultural and commercial interactions between the northern steppes and the southern seas. Focusing first on the acquisition, display, redistribution, and political significance of pearls, Allsen shows how the very act of forming such a vast nomadic empire required the massive accumulation, management, and movement of prestige goods, and how this process brought into being new regimes of consumption on a continental scale. He argues that overland and seaborne trade flourished simultaneously, forming a dynamic exchange system that moved commodities from east to west and north to south, including an enormous quantity of pearls. Tracking the circulation of pearls across time, he highlights the importance of different modes of exchange—booty-taking, tributary relations, market mechanisms, and reciprocal gift-giving. He also sheds light on the ways in which Mongols' marketing strategies made use of not only myth and folklore but also maritime communications networks created by Indian-Buddhist and Muslim merchants skilled in cross-cultural commerce. In Allsen's analysis, pearls illuminate Mongolian exceptionalism in steppe history, the interconnections between overland and seaborne trade, recurrent patterns in the employment of luxury goods in the political cultures of empires, and the consequences of such goods for local and regional economies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Close on the heels of the magnificent With Fire and Sword and The Deluge, comes this impassioned tale of love, war, heroism, treason and betrayal, with which the great classic Trilogy of Poland's most popular 19th century writer is brought to an end. Fire in the Steppe is the final book of Sienkiewicz's literary masterpiece which grips and enthralls just as powerfully today as it did when it was first published. It is an epic tale of love and adventure set in the savage wilderness of Poland's eastern borderlands in the 17th century, and it is also the most realistic of Sienkiewicz's novels. The Trilogy's most memorable heroes, Pan Zagloba and Pan Volodyovski, are joined here by the unforgettable Basia, whose own adventures ring with strength, courage and determination against the bloody background of raids, border battles, and invasion by the awesome armies of the Turkish Empire in 1672. Told by a master storyteller, Fire in the Steppe concludes the stories of the Trilogy's fabulous heroines and heroes who live, love and die in these pages of Poland's most enduring epic.
