Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Ships Of the countless stories of naval action which I have listened to in the course of the months I have spent with the Grand Fleet, I cannot recall a single one which was told as the consequence of being asked for with malice aforethought. I have never yet found a man of action who was enamoured of the sound of his own voice raised in the recital of his own exploits, and if there is one thing more than another calculated to throw an otherwise not untalkative British Naval Officer into a state of uncommunicativeness, in comparison with which the traditional silence of the sphinx or the proverbial close-mouthedness of the clam are alike sheer garrulity, it is to ask him, point blank, to tell you (for instance) how he took his submarine into the Baltic, or what his destroyer did at Jutland, or how he fought his cruiser at Dogger Bank, or something similar. Book The Ghost Ship Other Stories Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ghost Ship Other Stories Classic Reprint written by Richard Middleton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ghost-Ship Other Stories The other day I said to a friend, "I have just reading in proof a volume of short stories by an author named Richard Middleton. He is dead. It is an extraordinary book, and all the work in it is full of a quite curious and distinctive quality. In my opinion it is very fine work indeed." It would be so simple if the business of the introducer or preface-writer were limited to such a straightforward, honest, and direct expression of opinion; unfortunately that is not so. For most of us, the happier ones of the world, it is enough to say "I like it," or "I don't like it," and there is an end: the critic has to answer the everlasting "Why?" And so, I suppose, it is my office, in this present instance, to say why I like the collection of tales that follows. I think that I have found a hint as to the right answer in two of these stories. One is called "The Story of a Book" the other "The Biography of a Superman." Each is rather an essay than a tale, though the form of each is narrative. Book Ships and Havens Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ships and Havens Classic Reprint written by Henry Van Dyke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ships and Havens F all the things that man has made, 1 none is so full of interest and charm, 9 none possesses so distinct a life and character of its own, as a ship. Ships are but boards, says Shylock in The Merchant of Venice. But we feel that this is a thoroughly wooden opinion, one of those literal judgments which stick to the facts and miss the truth. Ships have something more in them than the timbers of which they are made. Human thought and human labor and human love, - the designer's clever con ception, the builder's patient toil, the explor er's daring venture, the merchant's costly enterprise, the sailor's loyal affection, the traveller's hopes and fears, - all the manifold sympathies of humanity, inform the dumb pil grims of the sea with a human quality. There is a spirit within their oaken ribs, a signifi cance in their strange histories. The common language in which we speak of them is an unconscious confession of this feeling. We say of a ship, She sails well. She minds her helm quickly. The wind is against her, but she makes good headway. We wish her a prosperous voyage. We en dow her with personality; and, as if to ac knowledge the full measure of our interest, Iwe express it in terms which belong to the more interesting sex. One reason for this is undoubtedly the fact that the ship appears to us as a traveller to an unseen, and often an unknown, haven. It is the element of mystery, of adventure, of movement towards a secret goal, that fasci nates our imagination, and draws our sympa thy after it. When this is wanting, the ship loses something of her enchantment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tall Ships I am not likely to forget the date. It was Nancy's sixteenth birthday and the Colonel gave a mighty party for her at Holly Hall. That evening the Colonel asked me to carry a load of oysters for him across the Bay to Annapolis in my bugeye on the morrow, and Nancy begged to go along. In themselves these were small matters, but from them all the rest followed. Holly Hall, our neighbor, was one of the larger plantations on the Neck. It sprawled across the widest part, from Chesa peake Bay on the west to the coves and inlets that notched the shore of Harris's Creek on the east. From north to south it was more than 3 miles long, and was split neatly down the middle by the oyster-shell road that crossed the Neck. West of the road the great fields where Colonel Savage raised his corn and tobacco and melons ran far down to the Bay. {to the east a considerable stand of the virgin forest remained, and the little clearings here and there among the trees were used for the kitchen gardens and for pasture for his blooded horses and purebred cattle and sheep and swine and fowl.
