Book excerpt: "Euphoric Vendetta" starts with the clandestine retaliation that has driven Shilpa Sen to join the Police Service. The childhood traumas that encompass a range of distressing incidents caused by violence and abuse tangled in a labyrinth of fear and doubt weave the tapestry of Shilpa's life that invigorated her dedication and determination for the relentless pursuit of justice amidst the unforgiving terrain of crime and corruption where the characters like Riya and Triparna are victims. On one level, it is a story about revenge, about a family distorted by the victim of child abuse that creates a web of deceit and depravity stretching far beyond the confines of a smooth and sound life. On the other hand, Inspector Shilpa Sen felt the weight of responsibility that was pressing down upon her shoulders. This was the responsibility to seek justice for those who suffer in silence, a responsibility to fulfil the unwavering commitment to truth and justice. The story also delves deep into the complexities of human mind that is like an ocean dealing with high tides and low tides. The emotional traumas are like the high tides creating a turbulence amidst the smooth flow of life when human mind loses its control and falls prey to destruction and manipulation. Out of an intricate web of memories and flashbacks along with the relationships and characters that can be identified with the day -to-day victims like Riya , Kajari Guha builds a story that thrills and chills even the most cynical reader.

Book Encyclopedia of American Short Films 1926 1959

Download or read book Encyclopedia of American Short Films 1926 1959 written by Graham Webb and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short subject films have a long history in American cinemas. These could be anywhere from 2 to 40 minutes long and were used as a "filler" in a picture show that would include a cartoon, a newsreel, possibly a serial and a short before launching into the feature film. Shorts could tackle any topic of interest: an unusual travelogue, a comedy, musical revues, sports, nature or popular vaudeville acts. With the advent of sound-on-film in the mid-to-late 1920s, makers of earlier silent short subjects began experimenting with the short films, using them as a testing ground for the use of sound in feature movies. After the Second World War, and the rising popularity of television, short subject films became far too expensive to produce and they had mostly disappeared from the screens by the late 1950s. This encyclopedia offers comprehensive listings of American short subject films from the 1920s through the 1950s.

But with each date they realize there’s an unexpected magic growing between them. Can they find their true selves without losing each other?

Book Gender and Violence in Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

Download or read book Gender and Violence in Historical and Contemporary Perspectives written by Jyoti Atwal and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a range of issues and phenomena around gender-related violence in specific cultural and regional conditions. Using an interdisciplinary approach, it discusses historical and contemporary developments that trigger violence while highlighting the social conditions, practices, discourses, and cultural experiences of gender-related violence in India. Beginning with the issues of gender-based violence within the traditional context of Indian history and colonial encounters, it moves on to explore the connections between gender, minorities, marginalisation, sexuality, and violence, especially violence against Dalit women, disabled women, and transgender people. It traces and interprets similarities and differences as well as identifies social causes of potential conflicts. Further, it investigates the forms and mechanisms of political, economic, and institutional violence in the legitimation or de-legitimation of traditional gender roles. The chapters deal with sexual violence, violence within marriage and family, influence of patriarchal forces within factory-based gender violence, and global processes such as demand-driven surrogacy and the politics of literary and cinematic representations of gender-based violence. The book situates relevant debates about India and underlines the global context in the making of the gender bias that leads to violence both in the public and private domains. An important contribution to feminist scholarship, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of gender studies, women’s studies, history, sociology, and political science.

Book 10 Things I Hate about Pinky

Download or read book 10 Things I Hate about Pinky written by Sandhya Menon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The delightful follow-up to When Dimple Met Rishi and There’s Something about Sweetie, which follows Ashish’s friends Pinky and Samir as they pretend to date in order to achieve their individual goals, to disastrous and hilarious results. Pinky Kumar wears the social justice warrior badge with pride. From raccoon hospitals to persecuted rock stars, no cause is too esoteric for her to champion. But a teeny tiny part of her also really enjoys making her conservative, buttoned-up corporate lawyer parents cringe. Samir Jha might have a few…quirks remaining from the time he had to take care of his sick mother, like the endless lists he makes in his planner and the way he schedules every minute of every day, but those are good things. They make life predictable and steady. Pinky loves lazy summers at her parents’ Cape Cod lake house, but after listening to them harangue her about the poor decisions she’s made (a.k.a. boyfriends she’s had), she hatches a plan. Get her sorta-friend-sorta-enemy—who is a total Harvard-bound Mama’s boy—to pose as her perfect boyfriend for the summer. When Samir’s internship falls through, leaving him with an unplanned summer, he gets a text from Pinky asking if he’ll be her fake boyfriend in exchange for a new internship. He jumps at the opportunity; Pinky’s a weirdo, but he can survive a summer with her if there’s light at the end of the tunnel. As they bicker their way through lighthouses and butterfly habitats, sparks fly, and they both realize this will be a summer they'll never forget.

Download or read book As Kismet Would Have It written by Sandhya Menon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will Dimple and Rishi find their happily ever after? Find out in this funny, romantic, endlessly charming enovella companion to the New York Times bestseller When Dimple Met Rishi! Dimple Shah has a lot of opinions about marriage, but they boil down to this: It’s not for her. Sure, she loves her boyfriend, Rishi, but why does she need to validate that with an institution that has historically never favored the woman? Why go through all that hassle? Rishi Patel deeply disagrees. He believes in the power that comes with combining love and tradition, and when the time comes, wants nothing more than to honor those things in a huge celebration with his friends and family. He knows Dimple loves him, but in hearing her rant about how marriage is a “construct of hegemonic masculinity” for the millionth time, a small, niggling part of him worries that it’s not the institution of marriage Dimple has a problem with; maybe it’s him. The two lovebirds find themselves at a philosophical impasse. Can they find a way to work it out, or does kismet have other plans?
