Come, children, let us enten therein and sojourn awhile in Hellas while her pagan poets sing us their songs of gods and goddesses who dwelt in star-palaces and rode betwixt heaven and earth in clouds or in dazzling chariots. Book Stories of Old Greece Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Old Greece Classic Reprint written by Emma M. Firth and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Old Greece "There is an instinct in the human heart Which makes all fables it has coined - To justify the reign of its belief, And strengthen it by beauty's right divine - Veil in their inner cells a mystic gift, Which, like the hazel twig in faithful hands, Points surely to the hidden springs of truth." Aside from their use as a means of strengthening the imagination, the myths embody ethical truths, which are helpful just in proportion to the intellectual activity which the stories arouse. The child lover will seek for the best means in accomplishing her end, - the harmonious culture of the child. In all that she does, she will be governed by the purest motives. The telling of a story has a broader meaning than that of entertainment. Its real motive is the making of what the child loves a means by which he may be led to a clearer understanding of his own powers and possibilities, and of his relations to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Greek Stories: Third Reader Grade Perhaps no other stories have ever been told so often or listened to with so much pleasure as the classic tales of ancient Greece. For many ages they have been a source of delight to young people and old, to the ignorant and the learned, to all who love to hear about and contemplate things mysterious, beautiful, and grand. They have become so incorporated into our language and thought, and so interwoven with our literature, that we could not do away with them now if we would. They are a portion of our heritage from the distant past, and they form perhaps as important a part of our intellectual life as they did of that of the people among whom they originated. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walk in Hellas, or the Old in the New Moreover, I intend to tell you many things which are small and unimportant. But little matters, if they be chosen with some insight, are the true characters by which we may spell out a nation or an age; small things often most vividly image the greatest deeds, the pro foundest thoughts. You know that the key-stone of the arch may be a pebble; the one pithy anecdote may be the concentrated utterance of centuries. And Greece herself is small, very small compared to most countries, but what does she not stand for? Exceeding small she is still that is just her gift, to make herself with her small ness the abiding image of what is worthiest and most beautiful in the world's history. Small things we shall not despise, when our very theme, Greece herself, is so small. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Stories of Greece and Rome Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Greece and Rome Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Greece and Rome In the old life of Greece and Rome there was more that was to last and influence us to the present day than in all the succeeding ten centuries together. In these few stories there comes out much of the high spirit of that far-off time as well as some of its barbarities, which we have outgrown. Here, then, the boy of to-day may get acquainted with some of the boys of an heroic age just as they were in their own homes and in the places that they knew. Let us hope that many who sit and pour over these pages may be in love, courage, and endurance twin brothers to "The Boy of Galatia," and thus make live again in our own schools and homes "the glory that was Greece," "the grandeur that was Rome." Book Tales of Ancient Greece Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tales of Ancient Greece Classic Reprint written by George W. Cox and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Ancient Greece The Tales collected in this volume have, with one exception, appeared in the 'Tales from Greek Mythology, ' 'The Gods and Heroes, ' and 'Tales of Thebes and Argos.' The 'Tales from Greek Mythology' were written for the use of young children. It has been found necessary to modify a few of these stories, to bring them nearer to the level of the rest. The story of the 'Vengeance of Odysseus' has been added to complete the series of legends from the Odyssey, so as to give some idea of that poem as a whole. In place of the longer introductions prefixed to the 'Gods and Heroes' and to the 'Tales of Thebes and Argos, ' a new introduction is given, tracing each story to its earliest form, and resolving it into its original elements. I have here placed before the reader results rather than proofs. Recent discussions on the subject seem to justify the conviction that the foundations of the science of Comparative Mythology have been firmly laid, and that its method is unassailable. Download or read book Ballads of Hellas Classic Reprint written by William Hathorn Mills and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ballads of Hellas Published by George Bell and Sons, London, England, in 1878, these ballads have been out of print for nearly forty years. I now re-publish them in the hope that they may again serve the purpose which they originally served - i. e. that, in running commentaries on the text of the original accounts in Herodotus and Xenophon, they may meet, so far as they go, the difficulty that young learners experience in grasping the subject matter of their translation-work. The general idea of them was of course suggested by Macaulay's Lays of Ancient Rome, but, so far as the spirit of them is concerned, there is more in them of Scott than of Macaulay. In those far-off days I tested the ballads by actual use, and was quite convinced of the value of the principle on which they were written. So forth they fare again. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Greece Often be repeated, that we must interpret an ancient writer by himself and by his own age, and not by our modern notions. We must not add on to him our mysteries and moralities, or translate his con fused modes of thought into our more distinct ones (more distinct, at least, to us). Neither must we measure him by our standards of right and wrong. His range of View may be limited, but we cannot safely enlarge it. Nor can we argue from his incon sistencies or omissions of details; nor draw inferences from his precise words, because we cannot expect him to use legal accuracy. Though from the grand parade Of printed verdicts thou hast long been free, The man who loved the Muse still found in Thee A judge to value, and a friend to aid. Thou, the nice student of fine-thoughted Keats, Mayst find my rhymes cast in too rough a mould For thy keen sense, fed with essential sweets: If so, speak free; I'll take thy blame for gold, And count their coin for brass, with false fair phrase Who blow the nattering trump before my Lays.
