Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From American History The object of this little book is to interest children in the history of their country. No attempt is made to give a connected or consecutive record, but rather to relate a number of striking incidents and to arouse the desire for an acquaintance with the full story of the greatest land on which the sun ever shone. Since the volume is intended for quite young pupils, the language is simple and direct, and it is believed that everything is told in a way that will not only interest and be understood, but will be in structive to the boys and girls not yet old enongh to take up a regular course in the study of history. Book Stories of Early American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Early American History Classic Reprint written by Wilbur Fisk Gordy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Early American History For children of tender years, the material must not only be concrete and colorful, but it must also be presented in language so simple that the thought can be easily grasped. If the author has succeeded in this twofold purpose, Stories of Early American History should fulfil its mission. It is hoped that the fine illustrations and the attractive typographical features of the book will help in bringing vividly before the child's mind the events recounted in the text. Another aid in making the stories real will, it is intended, be found in Some Things to Think About. These and similar questions, which will suggest themselves to the teacher, will doubtless serve to help the child in Vitalizing the life of the past and connecting it with the present and his own life. In conclusion, I wish to acknowledge my deep obliga tion to Mr. Forrest Morgan, of the Watkinson Library, Hart ford, and to Miss Elizabeth P. Peck, of the Hartford Public High School, both of whom have read the manuscript and have made many valuable suggestions and criticisms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America First: One Hundred Stories From Our Own History When children advance beyond the nursery age, no story is so wonderful as a true story. Fiction to them is never as appealing as fact. I have often been faced with the inquiry: whether or not a story is a true one. The look of gratification, when told that "it actually happened," was most satisfying to me as a story-teller. The nearer a story is to the life and traditions of the child, the more eagerly it is attended. True stories about our own people, about our neighbors and friends, and about our own country at large, are more interesting than true stories of remote places and people. We naturally arc interested in our own affairs, and the nearer they are to us the greater the interest we feel. That history is just a long, thrilling story of the trials and triumphs of pioneers and patriots is well known to those who have had to do with the teaching of history to youthful minds. Book Hero Stories From American History

Download or read book Hero Stories From American History written by Albert F. Blaisdell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero Stories From American History: For Elementary Schools This book is intended to be used as a supplementary historical reader for the sixth and seventh grades of our public schools, or for any other pupils from twelve to fifteen years of age. It is also designed for collateral reading in connection with the study of a formal text-book on American history. The period here included is the first fifty years of our national life. No attempt has been made, however, to present a connected account, or to furnish a birds-eye view, of this half century. It is the universal testimony of experienced teachers that such materials as are pervaded with reality serve a useful purpose with young pupils. The reason is plain. Historical matter that is instinct with human life attracts and holds the attention of boys and girls, and whets their desire to know more of the real meaning of their country's history. For this reason the authors have selected rapid historical narratives, treating of notable and dramatic events, and have embellished them with more details than is feasible within the limits of most schoolbooks. Free use has been made of personal incidents and anecdotes, which thrill us because of their human element, and smack of the picturesque life of our forefathers. It has seemed advisable to arrange the subjects in chronological order. As the various chapters have appeared in proof, they have been put to a practical test in the sixth grade in several grammar schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home School of American History We talk a great deal about our power but we do not realize it; we cannot realize it until we understand what it is which gives us power. We use a great many figures to convey an impression of our acreage and crops; but it is the farmer, the mechanic and the merchant who are the real capital of the country. Their character, energy, intelligence, thrift and practical sagacity constitute our real wealth the wealth which is not subject to the fluctuations of the market or the untimely conditions of the weather. This volume tells the story of material growth as fully and more comprehensively than most books but it tells also the story of America as it is written in the life, character and habits of the American man and woman. Book Hero Tales From American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hero Tales From American History Classic Reprint written by Henry Cabot Lodge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero Tales From American History After we had chosen our subjects we decided to prefix a motto, a fitting quotation, to each one of them. We were not unmindful of Addison's delightful essay on Mottoes and Signatures, which was itself prefaced by the familiar words Of Horace Ab ovo usque ad mala, or of the fact that a quotation from some Greek or Latin poet was at the beginning of each one of the Tatlers and Spectators. We were inclined to agree with Addison when he remarks: It was a saying of an ancient philosopher, that a good face is a letter of recommendation. It naturally makes the beholders inquisitive into the person who is the owner Of it, and generally prepossesses them in his favor. A handsome motto has the same effect. What influenced us still more I think was the fact that we were both habitual readers and genuine lovers of Scott and re joiced in the mottoes which he usually placed at the be ginning Of each chapter in his novels. In this exercise Scott had a peculiar charm, for apart from the ready fruits Of his wide reading, not only in accepted literature but in odd and out-of-the-way literary corners and by ways, whenever he was at a loss for an apt quotation he made one himself, attributing it to Old Play.
