She tried to regain her usual serene confidence. Why should she despair now, she asked herself, just when her cause was progressing so well, when the Gordon Colony had been strengthened by the addition of some fifty sturdy, capable Swedes, who had come over from Amer ica, and when still more of these good, dependable people were coming from Sweden. In reality her mission' had never appeared so promising as at that time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This hap pened about forty years before Christ; and the incidents recorded in the following volumes are supposed to occur between this period, and the capture of the Holy City, about three years afterwards, by Herod, assisted by the Roman general Sosius. The final destruction of J eru salem took place about a hundred years later. By the selection of 'a period thus intervening between the termination of the Old Testament and the Commencement of the New, the writer has not only: the advantage of an aera with which the general reader is comparatively little conversant, so far, at least, as the Jewish history is concerned; but he is enabled to avoid all immediate Contact with those personages and events which, having been made the subject Of Holy Writ, could not, perhaps, be introduced. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Child, or the Early Years of Our Lord Jesus Christ A few years since I heard a sermon on the song of the 'shepherds. It, too, revived the wonder of my childhood, as I imagined that brilliant glory shining upon the astonished shepherds. Standing soon after in a city park, when the trees and clouds were all made sur passingly beautiful by the burning of a worthless house, the thought came, Was it like this? There was the cloud for the angel, and here the glory of light! N o it was far more brilliant. We cannot imagine the surprise of the shep herdss And had they not known of a coming Saviour, they would not have been joyful at the words of the angel. Since that time my pur pose has been to try and write a little book, of which this is the result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For two thousand years, Hebrew writers imagined Jerusalem from a distance and used exile as a license for invention. The question at the heart of Figuring Jerusalem is this: how did these writers bring their imagination "home" in the Zionist century? Sidra DeKoven Ezrahi, one of our leading scholars of modern Jewish literature, explores the perils of this newly acquired proximity to a people's sacred and inherited resources. Ezrahi finds that the same diasporic procedures-cultic, ethical, and aesthetic-that Hebrew writers practiced in exile were maintained throughout the first half of the twentieth century, even in proximity to the Temple Mount, while Jerusalem was under the successive control of the Ottomans, the British, and then the Jordanians. After 1948, when the state of Israel was founded but East Jerusalem and its holy sites remained under Arab control, Jerusalem continued to figure in the Hebrew imagination as mediated space. But after 1967, all this changed. Over the next half century, the claim to exclusive sovereignty reignited a messianic fervor that had been suppressed in Hebrew culture for two millennia. The temptations and dilemmas of proximity to the sacred would become acute in every area of Hebrew politics and culture. Figuring Jerusalem ranges from classical texts, biblical and medieval, to the post-1967 writings of work of S. Y. Agnon, and the uncrowned poet laureate of Jerusalem, Yehuda Amichai. Ezrahi shows, ultimately, that the wisdom Jews acquired through two thousand years of wandering and exile, as inscribed in their literary imagination, must be rediscovered if the diverse inhabitants of this City are not to slaughter each other once again in the name of an exclusive and vengeful God"--

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy City: Benares Varied would be the nature of the sights that would meet your eyes in this ancient city - sublime and fantastic, elevating as well as queer. Advance with a scoffing predisposition and a supercilious contempt for what you may not understand, and things will take complexion from your temperament, and enough will there be for affording you amusement and means of cavilling and reviling. But why leave the honey and seek the sores which incidences of time must inevitably cause? Approach rather with a feeling of respect and in a spirit of considerate svmpathy making due allowances for the deformities of age, and with an earnest desire for peering into the inner nature of what you see, and enough shall you find for reflection, enlightenment and enjoyment. The apparent freckles and pallidness of age willthen pass away from your vision revealing the cherubic lineaments of the earlier days harbouring the soul immaculate and immortal! 'every religion is an expression of Divine \visdom' and its study is surely preferable to an off-hand condemnation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jerusalem, the Holy City We are told that the successive histories in which all this line of life and being is preserved, having now been exposed to the researches of modern criticism, have been found to be untrustworthy, and that all our views of his torical truth, and all our faith in ancient and sacred per sonages, must be given up. Book The Holy Land Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Holy Land Classic Reprint written by Robert Hichens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Land He was a Breton, he told me. A Breton! And why was he there in the burning African summer, so far from his own gray country? Very simply he told me why. Always, he said, from his earliest youth he had longed to go to the Holy Land, to stand on the sacred spot where Christ had died upon the Cross. He told nothing to any one of his desire, which at last became so keen that secretly he left his home, his native village, and made his way to the nearest seaport. There he saw a ship bound for Algiers. He was so ignorant of geog raphy that he supposed Algiers was a city in Palestine. So he went on board the ship, and presently found him self under the palms of Africa. In Algiers he nearly starved, perhaps would have starved, had he not heard by chance of Staoueli, and of the good Trappists who fed the hungry outside the gate of heaven. One day he walked out of the city, and at last, nearly dead with fatigue and hunger, came to the monastery's door, above which the Blessed Virgin was smiling. The monks took him in, fed him, clothed him, gave him work. And thus it came about that I found him sitting in the shadow of the tower on that burning day of summer.
