Book The Coin Evidence as a Source for the History of Classe Ravenna

Download or read book The Coin Evidence as a Source for the History of Classe Ravenna written by Elena Baldi and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2015 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research in this book is the result of work begun in the summer of 2003 when the author became involved with the research team investigating the harbour area of Classe, in a joint project of the Department of History, Culture, Civilisation (then Department of Archaeology), the Superintendence of Archaeological Heritage of Emilia Romagna with the Fondazione RavennAntica. The author carried out the cleaning and conservation of metal objects from the excavation, particularly the coins. Part of this work was realised in a postgraduate dissertation that discussed the evidence of the 2002-2003 excavation campaigns in the harbour area of Classe. The archaeological research of the harbour carried out between 2001 and 2005 brought to light a total of 2564 coins, most of which are illegible and in alloys of copper, documenting a chronological range between the 2nd century BC and the 8th century AD. The investigation of the Basilica of San Severo started in the summer of 2006 and is still ongoing (2014), however, the coins included in this work are those retrieved between 2006 and 2010 only. In this case, the excavations brought to light a total of 224 coins, in alloys of silver, copper and billon, with a large variety of emissions that witness the settlement of the site between the 1st century BC and the 14th century AD, with a few, sporadic modern and contemporary finds of the 20th century. The archaeological contexts studied represent a focal point for the reconstruction of the history of the territory and cover a wide chronological span that is useful for defining the characteristics of the settlement (housing, productive areas etc.) and its evolution.

Book A Printed Icon in Early Modern Italy

Download or read book A Printed Icon in Early Modern Italy written by Lisa Pon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-23 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1428, a devastating fire destroyed a schoolhouse in the northern Italian city of Forlì, leaving only a woodcut of the Madonna and Child that had been tacked to the classroom wall. The people of Forlì carried that print - now known as the Madonna of the Fire - into their cathedral, where two centuries later a new chapel was built to enshrine it. In this book, Lisa Pon considers a cascade of moments in the Madonna of the Fire's cultural biography: when ink was impressed onto paper at a now-unknown date; when that sheet was recognized by Forlì's people as miraculous; when it was enshrined in various tabernacles and chapels in the cathedral; when it or one of its copies was - and still is - carried in procession. In doing so, Pon offers an experiment in art historical inquiry that spans more than three centuries of making, remaking, and renewal.

Book A Decade of Italian Women

Download or read book A Decade of Italian Women written by Thomas Adolphus Trollope and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features the biographical accounts of ten women selected by the author not so much with any intention of bringing together the best, greatest, or most admirable, nor even the most remarkable women Italy has produced, as with a view of securing the greatest amount of variety, in point of social position and character. Each figure of the small gallery was intended to illustrate a distinct phase of Italian social life and civilization: the canonized Saint, that most extraordinary product of the "ages of faith," highly interesting as a social, and perhaps more so still as a psychological phenomenon; the feudal Châtelaine, one of the most remarkable results of the feudal system, and affording a suggestive study of woman in man's place; the high-born and highly-educated Princess of a somewhat less rude day, whose inmost spiritual nature was so profoundly and injuriously modified by her social position; the brilliant literary denizen of "La Bohème", etc. All these were curiously distinct manifestations of womanhood, and if any measure of success has been attained in the endeavor to represent them duly surrounded by the social environment which produced them, while they helped to fashion it, some contribution will have been made to a right understanding of woman's nature, and of the true road towards her more completely satisfactory social development. Volume 1: St. Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) Caterina Sforza (1462-1509) Vittoria Colonna (1490-1547) Volume 2: Tullia D'Aragona (c. 1510 - c. 1570) Olympia Morata (1526-1555) Isabella Andreini (1562-1604) Bianca Cappello (1548-1587) Olympia Pamfili (1594-1656) Elisabetta Sirani (1638-1665) La Corilla (1740-1800)

Book Conversion to Catholicism in Early Modern Italy

Download or read book Conversion to Catholicism in Early Modern Italy written by Peter A. Mazur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, conversion took on a new importance within the Catholic world, as its leaders faced the challenge of expanding the church's reach to new peoples and continents while at the same time reinforcing its authority in the Old World. Based on new archival research, this book details the extraordinary stories of converts who embraced a new religious identity in a territory where papal authority and Catholic orthodoxy were arguably at their strongest: the Italian peninsula. Through an analysis of both the unique strategies employed by clerics to attract and educate converts, and the biographies of the men and women—soldiers, aristocrats, and charlatans—who negotiated new positions for themselves in Rome and the other cities of the peninsula, a new image of Italy during the Counter-reformation emerges: a place where repression and toleration alternated in unexpected ways, leaving room for negotiation and exchange with members of rival faiths.

Book Templars in Bologna A Multidisciplinary Approach

Download or read book Templars in Bologna A Multidisciplinary Approach written by Giampiero Bagni and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to use a multidisciplinary approach to study the Knights' Templars of Bologna, Italy. Archaeological, scientific, historical and archival sources are combined to consider the Templars in the context of Bologna’s growing economic and political power during this period. A complete picture of urban and suburban Templar properties in Bologna is provided, detailing lucrative activities such as Templar land use, agricultural innovations and wine production. Because the Crusades were influential in this era and directly impacted the urbanization of the city, the Bolognese Templars are also studied in relation to the five other military orders in Bologna, including the understudied Crucifers and Knights of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many formerly unexplored historical and archival sources are integrated with scientific data from this project’s archaeological excavations and architectural surveys of the Templar House in Bologna, allowing for its precise dating and the development of an architecturally accurate 3D film reconstruction of this property. Particular attention is also given to the Order's rise and fall under the ecclesiastical governance of the archbishops of Ravenna, as well as the Templar trial conducted by Archbishop Rinaldo da Concorezzo. In addition, the biography of the famous Templar brother Peter of Bologna is explored, due to his considerable impact on the events of the Templar trial of 1310. While many Freemasons believe Peter of Bologna escaped from the Paris trial and went to Scotland in 1313, bringing information crucial to that organization’s founding, the research included here suggests that Peter returned to Bologna instead, serving as a Hospitaller until his death in the city in 1329. This book therefore suggests alternative conclusions regarding Peter of Bologna’s death and legacy, based on the latest available interdisciplinary research.

Book Townscapes in Transition

Download or read book Townscapes in Transition written by Carmen M. Enss and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did urban Italy come to look the way it does today? This collection of essays assembles recent studies in architectural history and theory exploring the historical paradigms guiding architecture and landscape design between the world wars. The authors explore physical changes in townscapes and landscapes, covering a wide range of architectural designs from strict modernist solutions to variations of regionalism, mediterraneanism and national style from all over Italy. Specifically, the volume explains how conservation, restoration and town planning for historic areas led to the production of heritage, and elucidates the role played by architects like Marcello Piacentini, Innocenzo Sabbatini, Mario De Renzi and Giulio Ulisse Arata.

Book Itinerari di storia sociale dell educazione occidentale Volume Secondo

Download or read book Itinerari di storia sociale dell educazione occidentale Volume Secondo written by Rita Minello and published by Edizioni Nuova Cultura. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
