Altre opere abbiamo su questo grave argomento, che, o per estensione o per dottrina o per pregio di stile, potranno dagli eruditi essere anteposte alla presente; ma niuna fin qui e sembrata ne piu feconda di notizie in poeo votame raccolte, ne piu adattata alla comune intelligenza, e quindi opportuna agli studj giovanili. Percio e dessa tuttavia il manuale dei maestri di scuola, il libro con cui la gioventu studiosa incomincia a conoscere i fasti di una Letteratura cosi antica ed illustre e feconda quale e la nostra. Mosso da tali considerazioni il tipografo-editore della Biblioteca Nazionale, volendo inserire arila sua raccolta anche un libro di Storia Letteraria, preferiva quello del Maffei, tanto piu che essendo tuttavia in vita l'autore, oragli dato sperare di ottenerne e miglioramenti ed aggiunte per la ristampa della encomiata e ricercata sua opera. Lo che infatti e avvenuto, come nella nota 2 dell' Avvertimento l'autore stesso dichiara, e come sara facile rilevare a chiunque far voglia il confronto delle antecedenti con la presente edizione, della quale il tipografo-editore ha acquistato la proprieta che intende porre sotto la tutela delle leggi veglianti.Ma la grave eta e il non poter fare piu uso della sua vista non consentivano al Maffei di dare da se medesimo a questa edizione tutte le cure che il tipografo-editore desiderava, e che ciascuno naturalmente brama di rivolgere a vantaggio dell' opera propria.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Postosi ai servigi del Duca fu onorato da molte illustri ambascerie ai doge di Vea nezle al duca di Savoia Emmanuele Filiberto 'all' imperatore Massimiliano, ad Enrico lil eletto re di Polonia, e quindi ai Po lacchi medesimi quando avendo Enrico abbandonato il trono Spero il duca alfonso di ottenerlo, nel che fu deluso non ostante l' accortezza e le cure del Guarini nei procurargli quella coro na. Tornato a Ferrara e caduto in disgrazia 'del suo principe visitò le corti di Mantova, di Firenze e di Urbino. Essendo egli di umore alquanto difficile e fastidioso, c'induco a credere che se in tanti e si spessi cambiamenti ebbe qualche parte l'insta bilità delle corti, molta ancora ne avesse la naturale sua inco stanza. Trovandosi nell' ottobre nel 1612 per certe sue liti in Venezia, compiè i suoi giorni travagliati, lasciando oltre la ci tata pastorale, alcune lettere e rime, il Segretario, cinque ora.
