Book excerpt: This book represents a first attempt to investigate the relations between Law and Agroecology. There is a need to adopt a transdisciplinary approach to multifunctional agriculture in order to integrate the agroecological paradigm in legal regulation. This does not require a super-law that hierarchically purports to incorporate and supplant the existing legal fields; rather, it calls for the creation of a trans-law that progressively works to coordinate interlegalities between different legal fields, respecting their autonomy but emphasizing their common historical roots in rus in the process. Rus, the rural phenomenon as a whole, reflects the plurality and interdependence of different complex systems based jointly on the land as a central point of reference. “Rural” is more than “agricultural”: if agriculture is understood traditionally as an activity aimed at exploiting the land for the production of material goods for use, consumption and private exchange, rurality marks the reintegration of agriculture into a broader sphere, one that is not only economic, but also social and cultural; not only material, but also ideal, relational, historical, and symbolic; and not only private, but also public. In approaching rus, the natural and social sciences first became specialized, multiplied, and compartmentalized in a plurality of first-order disciplines; later, they began a process of integration into Agroecology as a second-order, multi-perspective and shared research platform. Today, Agroecology is a transdiscipline that integrates other fields of knowledge into the concept of agroecosystems viewed as socio-ecological systems. However, the law seems to still be stuck in the first stage. Following a reductionist approach, law has deconstructed and shattered the universe of rus into countless, disjointed legal elementary particles, multiplying the planes of analysis and, in particular, keeping Agricultural Law and Environmental Law two separate fields.

Book Environment and Urbanization in Modern Italy

Download or read book Environment and Urbanization in Modern Italy written by Federico Paolini and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the second half of the 1940s, when postwar reconstruction began in Italy, there were three notable driving forces of environmental change: the uncontrollable process of urban drift, fueled by considerable migratory flows from the countryside and southern regions toward the cities where large-scale productive activities were beginning to amass; unruly industrial development, which was tolerated since it was seen as the necessary tribute to be paid to progress and modernization; and mass consumption. In his fourth book, Federico Paolini presents a series of essays ranging from the uses of natural resources, to environmental problems caused by means of transport, to issues concerning environmental politics and the dynamics of the environment movement. Paolini concludes the book with a forecast about the environmental problems that will emerge in the public debate of the twenty-first century.

Book Rights for Ecosystem Services

Download or read book Rights for Ecosystem Services written by Giulia Sajeva and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-12 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses how protecting the rights of local communities can contribute to the alleviation of ecological harms through the development of an innovative 'Rights for Ecosystem Services' framework. Ecosystem services describe the range of social, ecological, and economic benefits that people obtain from nature. Recognising the role of local communities, and criticizing the very use of the term services, this book draws on arguments for the rights of nature. Against a market approach to nature conservation it thereby transforms the current 'Payments for Ecosystem Services' framework into a unique 'Rights for Ecosystem Services' framework. With reference to a case study from Sicily, the book develops such a framework as a crucial means through which the environmental role of local communities can be recognised, protected, and fostered. Employing insights from a range of disciplines, this book will appeal to scholars working in the areas of environmental law, legal theory, political philosophy, human rights, and environmental studies, as well as others with practical concerns in the fields of conservation science and local communities' rights.

Book Cultural Severance and the Environment

Download or read book Cultural Severance and the Environment written by Ian D. Rotherham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-09 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major book explores commons, lands and rights of usage in common, traditional and customary practices, and the cultural nature of ‘landscapes’. Importantly, it addresses now critical matters of ‘cultural severance’ and largely unrecognized impacts on biodiversity and human societies, and implications for conservation, sustainability, and local economies. The book takes major case studies and perspectives from around the world, to address contemporary issues and challenges from historical and ecological perspectives. The book developed from major international conferences and collaborations over around fifteen years, culminating ‘The End of Tradition?’ in Sheffield, UK, 2010. The chapters are from individuals who are both academic researchers and practitioners. These ideas are now influencing bodies like the EU, UNESCO, and FAO, with recognition by major organisations and stakeholders, of the critical state of the environment consequent on cultural severance.

Book The Right to Vegetarianism

Download or read book The Right to Vegetarianism written by Carlo Prisco and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-12-07 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that vegetarian and vegan people should be guaranteed the right to eat according to their beliefs. The author claims that the right to vegetarianism is backed by the human and civil rights recognized in the constitutions of several nations. The first half of the book is based on the history of the main philosophical issues involved in eating plant food, from Phytagoras to Francione, while the second part is intended to compare different western legal systems and their report with human and animal rights. The Right to Vegetarianism represents a cross between animal and human rights and also serves as a proposal to support veganism from a different approach: not just as an animal right not yet recognized by the law, but also as a human right, already enforced by the law.
