Many are the open problems in physics that call for extremely precise standards, many are the advances in metrology made possible by a deep and assiduous study of the underlying physics. One has just to think of the enormous sophistication required in the measurements of some absolute quantities such as the Avogadro, the gas, or the gravitational constants. It is also worth noticing that not only the units of a metrological system are interrelated through the fundamental constants, but also the latter find their full significance when they are determined through the most exacting metrological experiments. Over the past decade many improvements took place and these are discussed in this book; from one side the old caesium SI second definition has found a new realisation, with the “fountain” approach, replacing the classical thermal atomic beam. The use of “cold” atom techniques, in which bunches of inert atoms are collected, slowed down, and cooled, has opened a number of new and unexpected avenues for metrology and fundamental constants; one of these possibilities being the atom interferometry. Another important “quantum jump” was the demonstration of the possibility of performing a direct frequency division in the visible, using ultra short femtosecond pulses. In addition, the possibility of “counting” electrons or photons gave a fundamental support to the development of single-electron capacitance standards and to new scenarios in the absolute calibration of photo-detectors.

Cold War-related research has mostly interpreted it as an instrument to pursue European integration, or to solidify détente "from below". However, municipalities were not only administrative, neutral actors, but also bearers of political content. This is particularly visible in the case of Italian towns located in the Western bloc, guided by socialist-oriented administrations, and their "twin" counterparts in the German Democratic Republic. This volume explores the connections initiated by such towns in the 1960s-1970s, focusing on socialist-specific conceptions which fueled the policies implemented by "red" municipalities, in managing local economies and social policies, but also in maintaining a lively and interconnected transnational microsociability among grassroots activists. Despite the increasing ideological divergences between Eastern and Western communists, and between Italian democratic communists and the more dogmatic and repressive, strictly pro-Soviet ones in the GDR, communication continued to flourish on the local level. The book explores what still linked the two worlds together, the "bright side of socialism": in this case, a common symbolism related to the past, practical exchanges in the present dimension, and a shared future imagination and conception of the town on the basis of a socialist horizon, built around welfare and services for citizens and workers.

This method would uncover the origins and development of Gramsci’s concepts using the same method that Gramsci himself believed would allow us to grasp ‘the rhythm of thought’ in Marx. The present work embraces this perspective and puts it to work in two ways. Its first part analyzes the relation between structure and superstructure and the concepts of hegemony and the regulated society. Lo scontro a livello economico si è radicato con forza soprattutto dopo la conclusione della Guerra Fredda e si presenta come un conflitto in crescita, nel quale non solo gli attori coinvolti sono spesso tra loro interdipendenti, ma agiscono all’interno di una rete globale che non ha dei riferimenti geografici o giuridici precisi e unici, complicando ancora di più la lettura del quadro d’insieme. Per annientare il proprio nemico nella guerra economica qualunque mezzo è lecito – dalle misure protezionistiche fino allo spionaggio o alle attività di lobbying – e non vi sono strutture che determinino limiti o stabiliscano un ordine. In particolare, con l’enorme diffusione dei mezzi di comunicazione, la guerra economica si è avvalsa sempre più di un suo strumento efficace: la guerra dell’informazione. Gli attori coinvolti, siano essi Stati o imprese, usano questo strumento per aumentare il proprio raggio d’azione a livello planetario (basti pensare alla possibilità di comunicare in tempo reale da una parte all’altra del mondo), ma anche come mezzo marcatamente offensivo (manipolando a proprio vantaggio, per esempio, le informazioni destinate ai consumatori).
