Download or read book Stopping Time Techniques for Analysts and Probabilists written by L. Egghe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-09-27 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers convergence of adapted sequences of real and Banach space-valued integrable functions, emphasizing the use of stopping time techniques. Not only are highly specialized results given, but also elementary applications of these results. The book starts by discussing the convergence theory of martingales and sub-( or super-) martingales with values in a Banach space with or without the Radon-Nikodym property. Several inequalities which are of use in the study of the convergence of more general adapted sequence such as (uniform) amarts, mils and pramarts are proved and sub- and superpramarts are discussed and applied to the convergence of pramarts. Most of the results have a strong relationship with (or in fact are characterizations of) topological or geometrical properties of Banach spaces. The book will interest research and graduate students in probability theory, functional analysis and measure theory, as well as proving a useful textbook for specialized courses on martingale theory.

Download or read book The Technique of Pseudodifferential Operators written by Heinz Otto Cordes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-02-23 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pseudodifferential operators arise naturally in a solution of boundary problems for partial differential equations. The formalism of these operators serves to make the Fourier-Laplace method applicable for nonconstant coefficient equations. This book presents the technique of pseudodifferential operators and its applications, especially to the Dirac theory of quantum mechanics. The treatment uses 'Leibniz formulas' with integral remainders or as asymptotic series. While a pseudodifferential operator is commonly defined by an integral formula, it also may be described by invariance under action of a Lie group. The author discusses connections to the theory of C*-algebras, invariant algebras of pseudodifferential operators under hyperbolic evolution, and the relation of the hyperbolic theory to the propagation of maximal ideals. The Technique of Pseudodifferential Operators will be of particular interest to researchers in partial differential equations and mathematical physics.

Download or read book The Ergodic Theory of Discrete Groups written by Peter J. Nicholls and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-08-17 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction between ergodic theory and discrete groups has a long history and much work was done in this area by Hedlund, Hopf and Myrberg in the 1930s. There has been a great resurgence of interest in the field, due in large measure to the pioneering work of Dennis Sullivan. Tools have been developed and applied with outstanding success to many deep problems. The ergodic theory of discrete groups has become a substantial field of mathematical research in its own right, and it is the aim of this book to provide a rigorous introduction from first principles to some of the major aspects of the theory. The particular focus of the book is on the remarkable measure supported on the limit set of a discrete group that was first developed by S. J. Patterson for Fuchsian groups, and later extended and refined by Sullivan.
Download or read book Squares written by A. R. Rajwade and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-10-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many classical and modern results and quadratic forms are brought together in this book. The treatment is self-contained and of a totally elementary nature requiring only a basic knowledge of rings, fields, polynomials, and matrices, such that the works of Pfister, Hilbert, Hurwitz and others are easily accessible to non-experts and undergraduates alike. The author deals with many different approaches to the study of squares; from the classical works of the late 19th century, to areas of current research. Anyone with an interest in algebra or number theory will find this a most fascinating volume.
Download or read book Hilbert C Modules written by E. Christopher Lance and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-03-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilbert C*-modules are objects like Hilbert spaces, except that the inner product, instead of being complex valued, takes its values in a C*-algebra. The theory of these modules, together with their bounded and unbounded operators, is not only rich and attractive in its own right but forms an infrastructure for some of the most important research topics in operator algebras. This book is based on a series of lectures given by Professor Lance at a summer school at the University of Trondheim. It provides, for the first time, a clear and unified exposition of the main techniques and results in this area, including a substantial amount of new and unpublished material. It will be welcomed as an excellent resource for all graduate students and researchers working in operator algebras.

Download or read book The Grothendieck Theory of Dessins D Enfants written by Leila Schneps and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-07-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dessins d'Enfants are combinatorial objects, namely drawings with vertices and edges on topological surfaces. Their interest lies in their relation with the set of algebraic curves defined over the closure of the rationals, and the corresponding action of the absolute Galois group on them. The study of this group via such realted combinatorial methods as its action on the Dessins and on certain fundamental groups of moduli spaces was initiated by Alexander Grothendieck in his unpublished Esquisse d'un Programme, and developed by many of the mathematicians who have contributed to this volume. The various articles here unite all of the basics of the subject as well as the most recent advances. Researchers in number theory, algebraic geometry or related areas of group theory will find much of interest in this book.
