Book excerpt: From the publisher. Skinny Revisited: Rethinking Anorexia Nervosa and Its Treatment offers a thorough overview and etiological explanation of anorexia as an eating disorder. Writing from a feminist sociobehavioral perspective, Maria Baratta forges a powerful argument about the role that our culture at large plays in creating the environment for disordered eating among women. Women are constantly bombarded with messages from the media to value ''skinny'' and to strive for thinness, no matter how great the dangers. Despite its seriousness, anorexia can be treated, and Baratta presents a successful treatment model that teaches how to engage an anorexic in such a way as to encourage eating. On the basis of 28 years of clinical practice, the author provides clinical cases that demonstrate the use of the ''language of the anorexic'' as a treatment intervention. Finally, the book explains how to create an individualized, healthy eating plan as opposed to following a diet designed to be applicable to anyone struggling with an eating disorder. For anyone with a professional, academic, or personal interest in anorexia nervosa, Skinny Revisited is a tremendous resource.

  • Author : Frederick M. Hess
  • Publisher : Brookings Institution Press
  • Release : 2011-04-01
  • ISBN : 0815719957

Download or read book Spinning Wheels written by Frederick M. Hess and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost everyone agrees that America's urban schools are a mess. But while this agreement has fostered widespread support for aggressive reform, Frederick Hess argues that much of what ails urban education is actually the result of continuous or fragmentary reform. Hess explains that political incentives drive school superintendents to promote reforms--to demonstrate that they are "making a difference." Superintendents have to do this quickly, both because their tenure is usually three years or less and because urban communities are anxious to see educational improvement. However, the nature of urban school districts makes it very difficult to demonstrate concrete short-term improvement. The result is what he terms "policy churn," which distracts teachers and principals from efforts to refine classroom teaching while seldom resulting in successful long-term changes. Hess argues that policymakers have misallocated resources by pursuing the "right" structure or the "best" pedagogy while paying insufficient attention to the more mundane--and more important--questions of how to implement, refine, and sustain a particular approach in their particular district. Hess explains that previous research on high-performing schools suggests that the best schools are characterized by focus and by an ability to develop expertise in specific approaches to teaching and learning. To help educators and policymakers adopt and nurture a focused agenda, he recommends institutional changes that increase the effectiveness of performance outcomes and reduce the incentives to emphasize symbolic reform.

Book Today Is My Monday

Download or read book Today Is My Monday written by Alura T Jefferies and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-08-14 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not your typical fitness book that would like for you to mimic everything that they have done to get you to a possible mirror image of themselves. This is a book about gaining knowledge, power and changing mindsets. I want the reader to feel that they are important enough to take a little time out to care for their bodies. As a Personal Trainer and Nutrition Counselor I constantly run into people that know nothing about changing their lives for the better as far as fitness and nutrition. The fundamentals are not there so they do not dare to attempt. I have seen so many fly by night fad diets that give false hopes and dreams but none try to start where most people are at, the beginning. Good nutrition and exercise working together has been the key to better health all along. Unfortunately living in a microwave society there are many that will come along trying to sell you pipe dreams. They leave out the parts telling that it is extra hard work that takes a lot of focus, dedication, soul searching and sacrifices. There are no short cuts, but with hard work and tenacity you will gain a better more fulfilling life. This book will not only give you the very basics for starting your journey but will also give you encouragement to stick with it for a life time. Changing your life first starts with changing your mind and gaining an understanding of what you need to do to care for it. If you start with that then the possibilities are unlimited. Hopefully Today is your Monday.
