Book When Trucks Stop Running

Download or read book When Trucks Stop Running written by A.J. Friedemann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-09 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In lively and engaging language, this book describes our dependence on freight transport and its vulnerability to diminishing supplies and high prices of oil. Ships, trucks, and trains are the backbone of civilization, hauling the goods that fulfill our every need and desire. Their powerful, highly-efficient diesel combustion engines are exquisitely fine-tuned to burn petroleum-based diesel fuel. These engines and the fuels that fire them have been among the most transformative yet disruptive technologies on the planet. Although this transportation revolution has allowed many of us to fill our homes with global goods even a past emperor would envy, our era of abundance, and the freight transport system in particular, is predicated on the affordability and high energy density of a single fuel, oil. This book explores alternatives to this finite resource including other liquid fuels, truck and locomotive batteries and utility-scale energy storage technology, and various forms of renewable electricity to support electrified transport. Transportation also must adapt to other challenges: Threats from climate change, financial busts, supply-chain failure, and transportation infrastructure decay. Robert Hirsch, who wrote the “Peaking of World Oil Production” report for the U.S. Department of Energy in 2005, said that planning for peak world production must start at least 10, if not 20 years ahead of time. What little planning exists focuses mainly on how to accommodate 30 percent more economic growth while averting climate change, ignoring the possibility that we are at, or near, the end of growth. Taken for granted, the modern transportation system will not endure forever. The time is now to take a realistic and critical look at the choices ahead, and how the future of transportation may unfold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you afraid of or unable to create intimacy or closeness with your intimate partner? Do you find that sometimes you create emotional, communicative, or even physical distance from that special someone in your life, even when, deep down, you really don't want to? If so, you share the relationship style psychologists refer to as the distancer. Distancers are often afraid of being engulfed or controlled by their partners. They fear rejection, vulnerability, and dependence. Sadly, they also tend to have short and unhappy relationships. If you want to stop running from love in your life, this book offers a simple, step-by-step approach you can use to move beyond your fear of intimacy and start building strong and lasting relationships. The exercises and self-evaluations in the book will help you become aware of how you operate in romantic relationships. You'll review and reassess your relationship patterns, deciding what changes you want to make in future relationships. Then you'll commit to actions that can make it happen.

Book When Can I Stop Running

Download or read book When Can I Stop Running written by John Podlaski and published by John Podlaski. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 Rave Review Review Book Club awards: BOOK OF THE YEAR The year is 1970, and the story follows the two soldiers - impressionable Detroit teenagers - during their long night in a Listening Post ('LP'), some 400 meters beyond the bunker line of the new firebase. Their assignment as a "human early warning system" is to listen for enemy activity and forewarn the base of any potential dangers. As they were new to the "Iron Triangle" and its reputation, little did they know that units before them lost dozens of soldiers in this nightly high-risk task and referred to those assigned as "bait for the enemy" and "sacrificial lambs." As he sat in the pitch-black tropical jungle - with visibility at less than two feet - John's imagination took hold throughout the agonizing night and, at times, transported him back to some of his most vivid childhood memories - innocent but equally terrifying at the time. As kids, we instinctively run fast to escape imaginary or perceived danger. Still, as soldiers, men are trained to conquer their fears and develop the confidence to stand their ground and fight. It's time to stop, as running is no longer an option. Review by Gary F Jones: This is a long short story or novella about a young man's response to fear from when he was 7 years old until he was in Vietnam in the early 1970s. The story alternates back and forth between things that scared him as he grew up in Detroit and the things that terrify him in the jungle of the Iron Triangle in Vietnam. The tales are engaging and pleasant to read. However, he got into more frightening situations as he was growing up than I even came close to.

Book STOP RUNNING FROM JEZEBEL CONFRONT YOUR GOLIATHS

Download or read book STOP RUNNING FROM JEZEBEL CONFRONT YOUR GOLIATHS written by DrCL Williams and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Kings, the eighteenth chapter, the prophet Elijah terminates 450 of Jezebel’s prophets, and when she gets the message of what happened, she immediately sent word to Elijah that within twenty-four hours, he will suffer the same fate. She sent a serious message to the prophet in the light of one of his greatest victories for God. The problem was, he paid more attention to the threat than his purpose. What is hindering your progress in Christ or paralyzing your forward motion in life? Could it be like Elijah you are giving too much attention to your critics and allowing them to rob you of your God-ordained destiny? Stop running from Jezebel. David, at this time, is an insignificant shepherd boy who is sent to the battlefield by his father to feed the soldiers of Israel, which included his jealous brothers. Upon his arrival, he hears the ranting of Goliath and finds the soldiers hiding in fear. David refused to hide from the problem but confronted it head-on, and the rest is biblical history. Confronting the Goliaths in your life is the only way they are going to be removed. When mountains get in your way, the Bible tells us to “speak” to them, but when Goliath (life’s challenges) is standing between you and your destiny, you must confront it.

Book excerpt: Dr. Melissa Caudle combines a suspenseful thriller and the search for truth in regard to past lives and reincarnation in this mind-bending novel in the tradition of "This Body: A Novel of Reincarnation" by Laurel Doud, "Journey of Souls," by Michael Newton, and Past Lives, "Many Masters" by Brian L. Weiss. The result is a masterful original fiction novel as profound as it is awe inspiring. "Never Stop Running" is a page-turning thriller that begs to be read in a single sitting as this mental time travel spanning centuries and numerous past lives through regression hypnotherapy unfolds. This is an astonishing novel from an unforgettable author and is a must read. What happens when the unthinkable occurs? What would you do if your loved one all of sudden woke up and didn't know who you were or for that matter who your family was either? For David and Jackie Hennessey they had the perfect white picket fence life, marriage, family and careers until the unthinkable happened - an accident that left Jackie with no memory. The couple struggled to find the balance between what they once shared and their new life. After David discovered Dr. Grayson, a well-known regression hypnotherapist, he convinced Jackie to seek his services in order to retrieve her subconscious memories. During her sessions, her memories surfaced only to uncover her past lives which crisscross centuries in her mental time travel. Faced with a moral dilemma of believing the dreams were once a reality and twisting her religious convictions on reincarnation, Jackie questioned her sanity and feared for her life after seeing her deaths in her previous lives. She believed she could never stop running as her marriage degrades and falls apart. Based on real events of regression hypnotic sessions of one brave woman, this is a tale of destiny and soul mates not to be missed. The most intriguing book you'll read all year. You don't have to believe in reincarnation to enjoy this tale, but it will get you to thinking about the possibility.

Book The Incomplete Book of Running

Download or read book The Incomplete Book of Running written by Peter Sagal and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Sagal, the host of NPR’s Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! and a popular columnist for Runner’s World, shares “commentary and reflection about running with a deeply felt personal story, this book is winning, smart, honest, and affecting. Whether you are a runner or not, it will move you” (Susan Orlean). On the verge of turning forty, Peter Sagal—brainiac Harvard grad, short bald Jew with a disposition towards heft, and a sedentary star of public radio—started running seriously. And much to his own surprise, he kept going, faster and further, running fourteen marathons and logging tens of thousands of miles on roads, sidewalks, paths, and trails all over the United States and the world, including the 2013 Boston Marathon, where he crossed the finish line moments before the bombings. In The Incomplete Book of Running, Sagal reflects on the trails, tracks, and routes he’s traveled, from the humorous absurdity of running charity races in his underwear—in St. Louis, in February—or attempting to “quiet his colon” on runs around his neighborhood—to the experience of running as a guide to visually impaired runners, and the triumphant post-bombing running of the Boston Marathon in 2014. With humor and humanity, Sagal also writes about the emotional experience of running, body image, the similarities between endurance sports and sadomasochism, the legacy of running as passed down from parent to child, and the odd but extraordinary bonds created between strangers and friends. The result is “a brilliant book about running…What Peter runs toward is strength, understanding, endurance, acceptance, faith, hope, and charity” (P.J. O’Rourke).
