Book excerpt: When Stonington's four founding fathers first laid eyes on the bucolic shoreline inhabited by the Pequot tribe, it was impossible for them to predict that the future state of Connecticut would produce nearly four centuries of American history. What became their sleepy coastal borough flourished from a "stony town" into what is now known as Stonington. Fishermen, whalers, and sealers would lead a boom in the 1800s, shaping a lifestyle that still persists as a testament to the area's heritage. Stonington survived major wars, an economic depression, and catastrophic hurricanes to thrive as an intimate yet welcoming community that harbored major motion pictures such as Mystic Pizza, Amistad, and Hope Springs. The town became a haven for Pulitzer Prize poet James Merrill and sustained a 1990s tourism revitalization that transformed it into one of New England's most precious hidden gems. Today, delectable seafood restaurants, charming shops, an abundantly rich historical heritage, and a picturesque seaside ambience put Stonington and its history at the quintessential forefront of every excursion to southeastern Connecticut.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stonington Battle Centennial: A Record of the Celebration of August Eight, Ninth and Tenth, Nineteen Hundred and Fourteen It may be objected that there is too much detail in the recital of the preliminaries of the celebration, but it was believed that the story of how the plan grew might be of service to other communities intending to celebrate anniversaries of their own. Some useful hints may be gathered from the experience of those upon whom the management of the Stonington Battle Centennial devolved. An endeavor has been made to give credit wherever credit was due for the success of the celebration, but it is certain that some names have been inadvertently omitted. Indeed it would not be practicable to put on record the individual services of all those who helped to carry the picturesque enterprise through. There were literally hundreds who gave generously of their time and efforts to the task. All that can be said by way of acknowledgment is that there was harmonious co-opera tion from the first and that everyone's contribution of labor and counsel had its share in the consummation. Book excerpt: Mystic was one of the most active shipbuilding ports along New England's southern coast during the mid-1800s. At the end of the age of sail, Mystic made a successful transition to a new economy based on textile and machine manufacturing, maritime engineering, and small craft building. These industries carried the village into the twentieth century. Today Mystic is a world-class tourist destination, a community that is both divided and unified by the Mystic River. The history of Mystic mirrors the history of many coastal New England towns, but the images here are unique to this southeastern Connecticut region and will be recognized by both residents and visitors alike.
