Book excerpt: The main character in CYBER TREK is called Mankin (Yes, Mankin, not Mankind.) He is like our inner correcting force observing all things . . . but made few comments. The following is a concise insight into CYBER TREK. Migrants left their island homes with great hopes and found otherwise. Culture shock treated in a light-hearted manner. Discussion of the stifling British old-boys system on the island . . . a time when the advantaged brown-skinned colonialists emulated the British, and practiced a fiercer type of social exclusion against the disadvantaged Blacks. Marcus Garvey's legacy and the Rastafarian Movement (Beating down Babylon!) . . . Authentic Jah discussions! Changing Caribbean politics (Jamaica specific), and the rise of the notorious gunman. Return of the deportees and the old political "Father confessors!" The old conniving politicians whom now want to confess their misdeeds. (Poking fun at the system and its leadership--in some instances it is not really funny.) Insight into the religious ideas of the wishy-washy political preachers that populate the islands--religious beliefs and practices of island groups. Not to be taken seriously--a fun thing! Political (politricksians) insecurity, silly inter-groups rivalry and biases of the various Caribbean island groups. Another political look, comparing Garvey's time with the present-day free-market system . . . Was Garvey wrong in his skepticism of the NAACP? Was he wrong in denouncing Haile Selassie for losing the war to the Italians? Dialogue between two radicals: one is the younger pro-Malcolm X (Kenworth), the other older pro-Garveyite (Simnally.) These guys interspersed their radical streetwise 1960-70s dialogue throughout the manuscript. Finally tired and old migrants now pining to return to their homeland . . . What are their chances for peaceful retirement in an island society gone mad with lawlessness and corruption?

  • Pages : 91 pages

Download or read book Taken written by Geoff Kemp and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narrators in Taken seem to be constantly hovering between different worlds: dream and reality, despair and enlightenment, love and detachment. On the one hand, the collection is a narrative: the use of a dramatic three-act structure bears this out. Taken begins with evocations of a troubled childhood and follows their consequences to a final resolution. On the other hand, Taken suggests that life is an endlessly unfolding cycle. Like any drama, the forward momentum is driven by conflict. The hard realism of some poems is contradicted by the surreal qualities of others. Moments of enlightenment sit alongside moments of doubt. Epiphany is balanced by a cosmic view of time. And like any cycle, the arrangement of the poems, and many of the poems themselves, repeat and return to the same concerns. The spiritual predicament that emerges from the collection is deeply personal, concise, unflinching. The poems are accessible but offer no easy answers. To read this collection from start to finish is to undertake a journey that circles slowly but relentlessly towards healing.

Book excerpt: This is the exciting fourth volume of Jay P. Newcomb’s epic, Visigothic Saga. In book three, Adawulf Hister, the tyrannical sorcerer of Dakkia, had engineered the kidnapping (by the centaurs and the satyrs) of the four-year-old leprechaun child Liam O’Hurleyhune and imprisoned him in Mandraki Castle on Cyclops Island in the far-off Hellene Sea. Also taken was the faun woman Amberwose and her five-year-old faunling Rockwose. Hister demands that in exchange for the lives of the hostages, Molly O’Hurleyhune travel to Cyclops Island and hand over to his servants the Heart of the Sea, which is the all-important eighth piece of the All-Seeing Eye—a powerful device of magic, which, if Hister is able to reassemble, will spell disaster for the world. With the All-Seeing Eye in place in his new Tower of Babel, Hister hopes to accomplish his evil scheme of bringing about the Gotterdammerung (twilight of the gods) and his conquest of all Midgard! But the forces of good have risen to the challenge and have assembled a force of gallant knights, the Knights of Víðarr (Vitharr). This new order of knights are aptly named—named after the angel of vengeance from Asgard called Víðarr; for Queen Gwynnalyn Volsungsdottir (who is the grandmaster of the Order of the Knights of Víðarr) has vowed an oath of revenge against the sorcerer and his minions who’ve committed this outrage. But it is a race against time for the gallant knights on their legendary journey. They must travel thousands of miles o’er land and sea and, along the way, fight off barbarians, confront King Minus of the Cyclopses, as well an evil sea dragon in order to save the hostages—before Hister has them cruelly executed! Meanwhile, King Sigurd will take the Tervingian Army and all his thanes on a legendary journey of their own to strike at the minions of the dark powers within their own territory. To do this, he must traverse a vast forest called Myrkvidr, which is the haunt of a wicked dragon named Fafnir. Sigurd must confront Fafnir in a life-or-death battle for the survival of him and his army. The elves, too, have their own legendary journeys to accomplish, and the soul of the world is hanging in the balance.
