Download or read book Confessions of A Steam Age Ferroequinologist written by Keith Widdowson and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2019-10-04 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ferroequinologist (noun) Someone who studies the 'Iron Horse' (i.e. trains and locomotives). From the Latin ferrus 'iron' and equine 'horse' + -logist As the British steam era drew to a close, a young Keith Widdowson set out to travel on as many steam-hauled trains as possible – documenting each journey in his notebooks. In Confessions of a Steam Age Ferroequinologist, he cracks these books open and blows off the dust. His self-imposed mission, that of riding behind as many Iron Horses as possible prior to their premature annihilation, led to hours of nocturnal travels, extended periods of inactivity in station waiting rooms, missed connections and fatigue. However, any downsides of his quest were compensated by the camaraderie found amongst a group of like-minded colleagues who congregated on such trains. This is a book that no self-respecting ferroequinologist should be without.

Download or read book Palmer Mills written by Roger Holden and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palmer Mills were cotton spinning mills in Stockport, Cheshire. Originally built in around 1822 by James Marshall they were extended considerably over the following three decades. They ceased operating in the early 1880s, by which time they were old and obsolete. A new company purchased the mills and largely demolished them before building a new mill, which was completed in 1887. A second mill was completed in 1890. With the decline in the cotton industry, the mills closed in 1931. The No.1 Mill was demolished in 1937 but the No.2 Mill continued in various uses until it was demolished in 1999. This well illustrated book is a history and technical description of the mills in the context of the Lancashire cotton industry.
