Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1803 and 1853, some 80,000 convicts were transported to Van Diemen’s Land. Revising established models of the colonies, which tend to depict convict women as a peculiarly oppressed group, Gender, crime and empire argues that convict men and women in fact shared much in common. Placing men and women, ideas about masculinity, femininity, sexuality and the body, in comparative perspective, this book argues that historians must take fuller account of class to understand the relationships between gender and power. The book explores the ways in which ideas about fatherhood and household order initially informed the state’s model of order, and the reasons why this foundered. It considers the shifting nature of state policies towards courtship, relationships and attempts at family formation which subsequently became matters of class conflict. It goes on to explore the ways in which ideas about gender and family informed liberal and humanitarian critiques of the colonies from the 1830s and 1840s and colonial demands for abolition and self-government.

Book excerpt: The American Senior Golf Association consisted of 900 men. Twenty four men are selected annually for the International Team. One year the team plays the Europeans for the King Leopold Cup, the next year they play the Japanese for the Prince Nabashima-Quittner Trophy. Managing 24 men and their wives and the golf matches is more than one man can handle. Fortunately I had four men who helped me 'stay the course' during my years as Captain from 1985 - 1993. 'This book will greatly enrich your love for the game of golf as well as your love for the Lord Jesus Christ. I share both of these loves with Curtis. Hopefully this book will stir you to use the game of golf to spread God's love to all those you come in contact with. It contains some wonderful stories which will bless you as they have me.' -Wally Armstrong, PGA Professional

Book excerpt: A stunning new novel from New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Wein, a prequel to the award-winning Code Name Verity. Before Verity . . . there was Julie. When fifteen-year-old Julia Beaufort-Stuart wakes up in the hospital, she knows the lazy summer break she'd imagined won't be exactly like she anticipated. And once she returns to her grandfather's estate, a bit banged up but alive, she begins to realize that her injury might not have been an accident. One of her family's employees is missing, and he disappeared on the very same day she la nded in the hospital. Desperate to figure out what happened, she befriends Euan McEwen, the Scots Traveller boy who found her when she was injured, and his standoffish sister Ellen. As Julie grows closer to this family, she experiences some of the prejudices they've grown used to firsthand, a stark contrast to her own upbringing, and finds herself exploring thrilling new experiences that have nothing to do with a missing-person investigation. Her memory of that day returns to her in pieces, and when a body is discovered, her new friends are caught in the crosshairs of long-held biases about Travellers. Julie must get to the bottom of the mystery in order to keep them from being framed for the crime. In this prequel to Printz Honor Book Code Name Verity, the exhilarating coming-of-age story returns to a beloved character just before she learned to fly.
