Book Separation of Atlantic Herring Clupea Harengus Stocks in the Southern Gulf of St Lawrence Using Digitized Otolith Morphometrics and Discriminant Function Analysis

Download or read book Separation of Atlantic Herring Clupea Harengus Stocks in the Southern Gulf of St Lawrence Using Digitized Otolith Morphometrics and Discriminant Function Analysis written by S. N. Messieh and published by Dartmouth, N.S. : Fisheries and Oceans, Canada. This book was released on 1989 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The identification of Atlantic herring stocks inhabiting both sides of the northern Atlantic has been the subject of numerous investigations for many years. In more recent years, the discreteness of the spring and autumn herring populations in the Gulf of St. Lawrence was established, a separation important for delineating proper fishery management units. Otolith characteristics, such as shape and first year's growth, were used in both the Gulf and Newfoundland regions, but the method used requires well-trained technicians and was criticized because of its subjectivity. A semi-automated microcomputer-based measuring system was developed for otolith measurements in the Gulf region to eliminate such subjectivity. The method uses a microscope with a drawing tube and a digitizer interfaced to a personal computer which analyzes the digitized otolith measurements using software packages. This report presents results using this system to separate herring spawning groups by otolith morphometrics.

Book Stock Identification Methods

Download or read book Stock Identification Methods written by Steven X. Cadrin and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stock Identification Methods, 2e, continues to provide a comprehensive review of the various disciplines used to study the population structure of fishery resources. It represents the worldwide experience and perspectives of experts on each method, assembled through a working group of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. The book is organized to foster interdisciplinary analyses and conclusions about stock structure, a crucial topic for fishery science and management. Technological advances have promoted the development of stock identification methods in many directions, resulting in a confusing variety of approaches. Based on central tenets of population biology and management needs, this valuable resource offers a unified framework for understanding stock structure by promoting an understanding of the relative merits and sensitivities of each approach. - Describes 18 distinct approaches to stock identification grouped into sections on life history traits, environmental signals, genetic analyses, and applied marks - Features experts' reviews of benchmark case studies, general protocols, and the strengths and weaknesses of each identification method - Reviews statistical techniques for exploring stock patterns, testing for differences among putative stocks, stock discrimination, and stock composition analysis - Focuses on the challenges of interpreting data and managing mixed-stock fisheries

Book Computer Vision Technology for Food Quality Evaluation

Download or read book Computer Vision Technology for Food Quality Evaluation written by Da-Wen Sun and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book in this rapidly expanding area, Computer Vision Technology for Food Quality Evaluation thoroughly discusses the latest advances in image processing and analysis. Computer vision has attracted much research and development attention in recent years and, as a result, significant scientific and technological advances have been made in quality inspection, classification and evaluation of a wide range of food and agricultural products. This unique work provides engineers and technologists working in research, development, and operations in the food industry with critical, comprehensive and readily accessible information on the art and science of computer vision technology. Undergraduate and postgraduate students and researchers in universities and research institutions will also find this an essential reference source.· Discusses novel technology for recognizing objects and extracting quantitative information from digital images in order to provide objective, rapid, non-contact and non-destructive quality evaluation. · International authors with both academic and professional credentials address in detail one aspect of the relevant technology per chapter making this ideal for textbook use· Divided into three parts, it begins with an outline of the fundamentals of the technology, followed by full coverage of the application in the most researched areas of meats and other foods, fruits, vegetables and grains.

Book North Sea Region Climate Change Assessment

Download or read book North Sea Region Climate Change Assessment written by Markus Quante and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an up-to-date review of our current understanding of climate change in the North Sea and adjacent areas, as well as its impact on ecosystems and socio-economic sectors. It provides a detailed assessment of climate change based on published scientific work compiled by independent international experts from climate-related disciplines such as oceanography, atmospheric sciences, marine and terrestrial ecology, using a regional evaluation and review process similar to that of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of our changing climate, discussing a wide range of topics including past, current and future climate change, and climate-related changes in marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. It also explores the impact of climate change on socio-economic sectors such as fisheries, agriculture, coastal zone management, coastal protection, urban climate, recreation/tourism, offshore activities/energy, and air pollution.

Book Population Production and Regulation in the Sea

Download or read book Population Production and Regulation in the Sea written by D. H. Cushing and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-06-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do fish populations regulate themselves? Why do some fish stocks flourish and then die away? These questions have fascinated fisheries scientists for decades, and in the last twenty years answers have begun to emerge. In this comprehensive 1995 account, David Cushing shows how the fate of fish larvae which live close to the centres of production in the sea has a crucial effect on population regulation. He shows how the timing and development of tidal fronts in particular regions has profound implications for fish and plankton production, which in turn affects fish recruitment. If recruitment of fish larvae into the pool of adult fish is insufficient, stocks may fail. It is only by understanding these processes that we can hope to recognise the implications of global climate change on marine populations. This book will be essential reading for all those interested in marine ecology and fisheries biology.
