Book Biology of the Northern Pike in Oahe Reservoir 1959 Through 1965

Download or read book Biology of the Northern Pike in Oahe Reservoir 1959 Through 1965 written by Thomas J. Hassler and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variations in length, weight, and maturity of northern pike in Oahe Reservoir were associated with sex and year class. Females were larger and more numerous than males. Catches were dominated by the 1959 and 1962 year classes; the 1964 year class was missing. Annulus formation began in April and was completed by July. SInce impoundment, large year classes have been associated with a rise in water level above previous high levels in spring and continuation of the higher level though early summer.

Book Stock Assessment of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2022

Download or read book Stock Assessment of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2022 written by Matthew Albert and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of northern pike Esox lucius ≥450 mm fork length (FL) was estimated in Harding Lake during 2022 using a 2-sample mark–recapture experiment for a closed population. The first sampling event occurred 1–3 and 6–10 June and the second occurred 10–12, 16–18, 23, 25, and 30 August. Hook-and-line gear was used exclusively in both events. Estimated abundance of northern pike ≥450 mm FL was 949 (SE = 114; 90% CI = 761–1,137). Northern pike 450–599 mm FL made up 58% (SE = 9%) of the estimated population and fish ≥600 mm FL accounted for 42% (SE = 11%). The water level at Harding Lake has increased over the past 7 years and is currently at the target elevation of 717 ft above sea level. The higher water level has created and improved habitat for northern pike. This abundance estimate demonstrates that the northern pike population is continuing to increase along with the water level.

Book Stock Assessment of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2020

Download or read book Stock Assessment of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2020 written by Laura Gutierrez and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Harding Lake, an updated estimate of northern pike abundance is needed to determine if the population is large enough to reopen the sport fishery. In this lake, the abundance of northern pike = 450 mm FL declined from roughly 2,500 fish in 1993 to 500 in 1999. This decline was attributed to a loss of rearing habitat in shallow vegetated littoral areas and prompted the sport fishery to be closed in 2000. In 2007, water was diverted from Rogge Creek to raise the lake level and re-establish northern pike habitat. As of 2012, the population had not rebounded to its numbers in the early 1990s, and the sport-fishery has remained closed. This study will estimate the abundance and length-composition of northern pike = 450 mm FL in Harding Lake using a two-event mark-recapture experiment to determine if, and in what capacity, the sport fishery is ready to be re-opened. The capture and recapture events will take place in June and August 2020.

Book excerpt: The northern pikeOCosometimes affectionately known as the OC aquatic wolfOCOOCois one of the most sought after and mythologized fishes in Minnesota, but until now there have been few books devoted to the history and ecological management of the species. Based on pioneering research carried out in Minnesota by leading pike specialist Rodney B. Pierce, "Northern Pike Ecology, Conservation, and Management History" is the most complete collection of information to date on the species, for everyone from scientists and conservation biologists to general readers and recreational anglers. A tremendously important game fish and resource both in Minnesota and throughout the northern hemisphere, northern pike populations directly reflect local geology and human influence, playing a key role in the health of freshwater ecosystems. As urbanization spreads and the human population continues to grow, pike populations face increasing pressure, requiring new ways of looking at and managing the species. In Minnesota, groundbreaking work has been conducted on northern pike: analyses of stocking success and investigations into the relationships within fish communities, the management of rearing marshes, environmental effects on natural production, the genetics of northern pike, and strategies for scientifically monitoring pike. The state has been a leader in developing fishing regulations to help restore large pike, among many other measures designed to ensure the future quantity and health of a key species in MinnesotaOCOs waterways. Weaving significant historical scientific literature and technical details together with his own research, PierceOCOs benchmark study documents and synthesizes the long history of northern pike management and describes the latest efforts being taken to better understand and manage this critical and renowned species. Book A Biological Analysis and Population Assessment of Northern Pike Inconnu and Lake Whitefish from the Mackenzie River Delta Exploratory Fishery 1989 93

Download or read book A Biological Analysis and Population Assessment of Northern Pike Inconnu and Lake Whitefish from the Mackenzie River Delta Exploratory Fishery 1989 93 written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploratory fishery was carried out in the Mackenzie River Delta 1989-93 to assess the commercial fishery potential in the area. Broad whitefish were the target species of this fishery, but other species such as northern pike, inconnu, and lake whitefish were also harvested. In this report, biological data from these three by-catch species are analyzed to assess the impact of the fishery on population abundance & structure. Trends in size & age frequency, age at maturity, sex ratio, growth rates, and mortality rates are examined to determine whether the fish populations have remained healthy & stable at current harvest levels. Recommendations are made regarding the commercial fishery and research.
