Book excerpt: Still Stepping: A Family Portrait is a twenty-two year, long-form portrait of a family as it cruises along, gets clobbered by a treacherous childhood illness, and then moves forward. Amidst the quotidian of life, my photographs and the family's words-from letters, an essay, a documentary and interviews-provide an intimate window into a world turned upside down then righted by two shaken but determined parents. The book follows the family as it figures out how to care for a severely disabled child, and rights itself to the new reality by the will and persistence (and humor) of the four family members. The narrative is presented in two parts. The first begins with the untroubled days of early childhood. It follows the Morgan-Orton family as they seek a diagnosis for nine-year-old Parker's increasingly disturbing behavior and learn the worst of news-that it is Childhood Onset Schizophrenia (COS). It continues with the period of adaptation and moving forward; shaken but determined, the family finds a new rhythm. The second part, the Postscript, presents the children in their twenties with all four offering unvarnished reflections on their lives and concerns for the future.

Book excerpt: After narrowly escaping with her life, Aphrodite wakes up to find herself at the demigods' base camp--a gorgeous tropical island. Powerless and injured, she has no choice but to glamour herself as a demigoddess in order to find out what's really going on. Lucky for her, she's not alone. Ares is with her, also in disguise. But she soon realizes she might be more of a liability than an asset when her panic attacks and nightmares threaten to expose them both. Ares is as anxious as anyone to shut down the demigods' plot. But right now, all he can think about is Aphrodite. He almost killed her, for Gods' sake! And though the timing couldn't be any worse, he's falling hard and fast. He'll do anything to protect her . . . even if it means sacrificing himself. Still, they find allies in the most unexpected places . . . More goddess than demigoddess, Medea is married to the rebel leader, Jason. But there's something odd going on. Jason is acting very strange, and Medea finds herself drawn to a new demigoddess who mysteriously arrived on the island half-dead. She senses there's more to this visitor than meets the eye. Little does she guess . . . War is coming, there's no doubt. But, in her weakened state, does Aphrodite have any hope of surviving it? Kaitlin Bevis spent her childhood curled up with a book and a pen. If the ending didn't agree with her, she rewrote it. Because she's always wanted to be a writer, she spent high school and college learning everything she could to achieve that goal. After graduating college with a BFA and Masters in English, Kaitlin went on to write The Daughters of Zeus series.

Paradise is a land of splendor with virgin forests, lakes, and streams filled with the abundance of wildlife. The head of the family is the tough and hardened but godly man, former Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant John Bootan. He and his business partner, Dan Lupa, are professional hunting guides. They book fly-in clients from the United States and other countries for Alaskan big game hunting and fishing. John's outfitter team includes four nephews, their wives, a niece, and hired help. Whether their story takes you to the war scenes of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, the dangers of big game hunting, or the lost romances of their past, their courage and spirit exemplify the heart of a true American Christian family. In The Homecoming a thirteen-year tribulation continues involving John's oldest nephew Brandon. An emotionally torn veteran, who lost his most precious possessions before his Vietnam trauma: His faith in God, his wife to be, Marcy Lamore, and his dignity as a man. In a desperate search for a meaning and purpose in life, he is fostered by the sage wisdom of his Uncle John and the devoted love of his younger brother Bud. However, Bud's recent marriage to Elaine Petry is a threat to Brandon, fearing that she has taken Bud away from him. In their homecoming to Paradise, a clash between husband and wife, between brother and brother, and between sister-in-law and brother-in-law unfold. To save his family from destruction, Brandon seeks refuge at Little Splendor, land also owned by the Bootans. Months later after leaving Paradise, Brandon learns of a hunting disaster involving Bud and quickly joins his family for a search and rescue. It becomes a long journey back home for the Bootans as they struggle with the natural elements, their fellow man, and ultimately with themselves.
