Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds and Mammals of the Stikine River Region of Northern British Columbia and Southeastern Alaska In years past the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology has conducted several expeditions to the coast of southeastern Alaska, covering in all a large part of that district, and one to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, nearby and of somewhat similar character.1 As one result of this field work the Museum has obtained a representative collection of the birds and mammals of this strongly characterized northwestern coast region of North America. Of the closely adjacent interior of British Columbia, however, the Museum contained no specimens whatever. Book excerpt: September 1979. When thirty-something Peter Rowlands loaded up his Landcruiser and took canoe Dimples to join his friend Hal Marsden on a paddling adventure in northern BC’s backcountry, he never expected one river—Stikine—would radically change the course of his life. Rowlands became so enchanted by this 640-kilometre stretch of wild beauty, he joined the ranks of citizens calling for protection of the Stikine River, its watershed, and its Indigenous communities. Facing layers of bureaucracy and the cavernous pockets of big business, Rowlands found himself tangled in a multi-decade morass, where money always seemed to eclipse mother nature. Written to highlight the importance of heathy ecosystems and stressing the importance of fresh water to global health, Stikine Odyssey exposes questionable relationships between government and industry in hopes of furthering awareness and encouraging improvement. Stikine Odyssey: From Adventure to Activism with The Great River is a story of complexity, evolution, and staggering beauty, much like the river itself. Rowlands is a natural storyteller whose humour and passion are perfectly complemented by Gary Fiegehen’s striking photography. Stikine Odyssey is sure to captivate a vast range of readers beginning with outdoor adventurers, history buffs, and the environmentally conscious everywhere.

Book excerpt: These chapters are mainly a republication of the series of letters appearing in the columns of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat during the summer of 1883, and in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and the New York Times during the summer of 1884. To readers of those journals, and to many exchange editors, who gave further circulation to the letters, they may carry familiar echoes. The only excuse for offering them in this permanent form is the wish that the comparatively unknown territory, with its matchless scenery and many attractions, may be better known, and a hope that those who visit it may find in this book information that will add to their interest and enjoyment of the trip. In rearranging the original letters many errors have been corrected and new material incorporated. During brief summer visits it was impossible to make any serious study, solve the mysteries of the native people, or give other than fleeting sketches of their out-door life and daily customs. Elaborate resumés of the writings of Baron Wrangell and Bishop Veniaminoff have been given by Professor Dall in his work on "The Resources of Alaska," and by Ivan Petroff in the Census Report of 1880 (Vol. IX.), and have ivsince been so often and so generally quoted as hardly to demand another introduction to those interested in ethnology. Such mention as I have made of the traditions and customs of the Thlinkets is condensed from many deck and table talks, and from conversations with teachers, traders, miners, and government officers in Alaska. Wherever possible, credit has been given to the original sources of information, and the "Pacific Coast Pilot" of 1883 and other government publications have been freely consulted. The nomenclature and spelling of the "Coast Pilot" have been followed, although to its exactness and phonetic severity much picturesqueness and euphony have been sacrificed.
