Book Evaluation of Test Methods for Stiffness Properties of Hot Mix Asphalt HMA

Download or read book Evaluation of Test Methods for Stiffness Properties of Hot Mix Asphalt HMA written by Stephen Alan Cross and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current 1993 AASHTO "Design Guide for Design of Pavement Structures" uses resilient modulus to assign an "a" coefficient to hot mix asphalt (HMA) to determine the required thickness of the HMA layer for a given traffic loading and subgrade support condition. There are several methods to determine the modulus of a mix for use in determining the "a" coefficient. Modulus results are a function of the test method and curing conditions. Therefore, the test method and curing conditions would have an effect on the "a" coefficient used in thickness design and, hence, the thickness of the pavement layers. A need was voiced by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) to evaluate the available test methods for determination of the stiffness properties of HMA.

Book Resilient Modulus and the Fatigue Properties of Kansas Hot Mix Asphalt Mixes

Download or read book Resilient Modulus and the Fatigue Properties of Kansas Hot Mix Asphalt Mixes written by Stefan A. Romanoschi and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research study aimed to determine the dynamic modulus, bending stiffness and fatigue properties of four representative Superpave Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) mixtures used in the construction of base layers of Kansas flexible pavements and to compare the measured values with those predicted by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Design Guide. To achieve these objectives, asphalt concrete beams were tested in third point-bending at constant strain, at four temperatures and four levels of strain. Dynamic resilient modulus tests were performed on asphalt cylindrical specimens at five temperatures and five loading frequencies. Multi-linear regression analysis was performed to develop a linear relationship between the bending stiffness and the fatigue life for the asphalt mixes tested.

Book Fatigue and Stiffness Evaluations of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement in Hot Mix Asphalt Mixtures

Download or read book Fatigue and Stiffness Evaluations of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement in Hot Mix Asphalt Mixtures written by Feipeng Xiao and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recycling of existing asphalt pavement materials produces new pavements with considerable savings in material, money, and energy. Understanding the ability of an asphalt pavement containing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) to resist fracture from repeated loads is essential for the design of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures. However, reaching a better understanding of fatigue behaviors of these pavements continues to challenge researchers all over the world, particularly, as recycled materials with more complex properties are being used in HMA pavements. This study explores the utilization of the conventional fatigue analysis approach in investigating the fatigue life of asphalt mixtures containing RAP. The fatigue beams were made with two asphalt binders, two aggregate sources, four RAP contents (0 %, 15 %, 25 %, and 30 %), and tested at 5 and 20°C. A total of eight mixtures was evaluated and 64 fatigue beams were tested in this study. The test results indicated that the addition of RAP, as expected, increased the viscosity, G*sin?, and creep stiffness values while reducing the m-values. However, no obvious trends were found for stiffness and fatigue life of mixtures as the RAP content increased. Statistical analysis results indicated that for binders and mixtures containing 30 % RAP, the utilization of softer binder significantly decreased the viscosity, G*sin?, and creep stiffness values; however, there were no significant differences in the stiffness and fatigue life values of these mixtures.

Book Development of a Simplified Asphalt Concrete Stiffness fatigue Testing Device

Download or read book Development of a Simplified Asphalt Concrete Stiffness fatigue Testing Device written by Nam H. Tran and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanistic-empirical flexible pavement design procedures proposed for use within the 2002 Design Guide require the input of the dynamic modulus (E*) of hot-mix asphalt concrete. In addition, the E* test has been proposed as a "simple performance test" for use in mixture design and construction quality control. The objective of this study included conducting the dynamic modulus test, evaluating the accuracy/variability of test results, and constructing master curves for the mixtures tested. The hotmix asphalt mixes tested in this research are typically used for pavement construction in Arkansas, and binder content and air voids were varied to simulate typical construction variability. The analysis showed that the variability of the average dynamic modulus for each set of four replicates was acceptable. Since the dynamic modulus tests were run at intermediate temperatures in this study, a modified procedure, using Arrhenius and power functions, was employed to construct the master curves. Based on the master curves, the effects of aggregate size, binder content, and air voids on the tested asphalt mixtures were evaluated and determined to be consistent and reasonable. The testing procedure and results of this study were recommended for use in a new project to characterize the stiffness of Arkansas mixtures to prepare input data for the proposed 2002 Design Guide.
