Book excerpt: Animated Film Edition: Hi Button-bellies!My name is Steven Sockeye. Pound for pound, Sockeye Salmon are simply the best. I write to you because every fish in my redd insists my story be told. Actually it's not just my story, it is the story of all 501 of us who made it to the ocean and back without losing one Sockeye. It's a story for your little button-bellies, hopefully they can learn as we did when we shattered conventionality and from the pieces built a better existence. Instead of shunning the puny and sick, the unfamiliar and different, we encouraged everyone to contribute to our great adventure. This great adventure existed every day during our short life span. We began as 5000 strong, crammed into a batch of eggs, roe, in Sawtooth Creek deep in the mountains of Idaho. My siblings disappeared daily, gobbled up by birds and fish, washed downstream until only 501 of us remained. As teenagers we fought the turbines of many dams and pollution of the button-bellies (we also call them mammals on sticks) on our route to the ocean. We outsmarted the harbor seals that ate Sockeye Salmon by the thousands at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River. We escaped the gill nets of the stick-mammals who float on things called boats. Our greatest achievement, which made us legions of the sea, came when we met and conquered Zuss--the warrior king of the sea--and his pod of killer whales. We accomplished this because we learned to cooperate with each other, no matter how difficult cooperation seemed. Unfortunately, our cousins in the other Sockeye redds did not learn as we did and very few of them survived. That's why you call Sockeye Salmon an endangered species. Please don't be disheartened by all this loss of life, because out of great tragedy comes great humor, and we certainly experienced our share of it. My sides still ache from laughing at the stick-mammals fishing along the river's bank yelling "fish on. Fish on. I got a big one," as they chased their lines which we snagged on a submerged log the current pulled downstream. Then there were the fat bears that sat on their big bear butts at the top of the rapids, happily munching on Sockeye Salmon. We scared those bears so badly that they are probably still running as this preview reaches you. Speaking of previews, this one must come to an end as we Sockeyes will shortly come to our ends. Our spanning is over and so ends our great quest, one in which only the strongest were supposed to survive, but we showed the water world a celebration of life. There will be no offspring for us to pass our story onto after we are gone, which will be soon, so we want to pass it on to the button-bellies, so that they can learn to be better mammals as we learned to be better fish.Your soon to be gone storyteller,Steven Sockeye

Book Casting Forward

Download or read book Casting Forward written by Steve Ramirez and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Casting Forward, naturalist, educator, and writer Steve Ramirez takes the reader on a yearlong journey fly fishing all of the major rivers of the Texas Hill Country. This is a story of the resilience of nature and the best of human nature. It is the story of a living, breathing place where the footprints of dinosaurs, conquistadors, and Comanches have mingled just beneath the clear spring-fed waters. This book is an impassioned plea for the survival of this landscape and its biodiversity, and for a new ethic in how we treat fish, nature, and each other.
