Download or read book Training the Steve Reeves Way written by and published by Greg Sushinsky. This book was released on with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Arnold, cinematically and in bodybuilding annals, there was Steve Reeves. With the breathtaking lines and classic style, the man took his genetic blueprint and raced away with it, creating arguably the most impressive physique in the history of the planet. No, not the biggest (though he had great size), and no, not the most ripped (though he had considerable definition), but certainly as greatly and carefully proportioned, shaped and attended a physique as we’ve ever seen. You might get a vastly better physique by incorporating something of the Reeves approach to training. Not that you’ll be Reeves--you don’t get Larry Scott’s arms by doing his arm workout, but in the case of Reeves-style training, your chances are very good that you’ll be on the road to achieving your own best physique, with your own individual style. Sound good? Let’s go.

Download or read book Steve Reeves Legends Never Die written by Deborah Stewart and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Steve Reeves had three major parts: First there was Steve Reeves the ultimate, and in my opinion, incomparable world class bodybuilder. He won all the National and International bodybuilding titles without using steroids, artificial enhancers or unethical practices. Steve was hard-working and innovative. His sharp mind and determination mixed workouts with nutrition to create a magnificent male body. Next there was Steve Reeves the actor who filled our movie theater screens with sensational, larger than life portrayals. He played the lead in fifteen movies including Hercules, The Thief of Baghdad, Duel of the Titans, Son of Spartacus, and Goliath and the Barbarians. His personal favorite was Long Ride from Hell - his only Western Last there was Steve Reeves the rancher, horse breeder and author. Steve was never deluded about being a great actor. He made movies in order to build a nest egg which enabled him to own and enjoy a couple of ranches back home in the Western United States. Ranching was always his first love and passion. This Steve Reeves was mostly out of the limelight. He spent his time hard at work digging post holes and breeding gaited Morgan horses. This book is about my life with Steve Reeves, the rancher, during the last seven years of his life. It is written from the perspective of a woman who was (and will always be) deeply, madly in love with Steve Reeves I am writing these memories down now due to concerns that dementia, the disease which has devastated my mother's mind, may be germinating in me. It is a case of "before I forget what I can still remember." I have relied heavily on my personal journals to bring focus to that which the passage of time, my series of small strokes and what might be dementia, has fogged. I do not want the memory of my Stephen (Steve Reeves to millions of fans) to dissolve and become forever lost. He was such a remarkable man. Once I knew him, I would never be the same. Steve Reeves was more than just an actor with a powerful physique. He was quite brilliant. He would examine a machine, tool or product and then explain how he would change this part or that aspect to improve its function. He used a complex combination of his natural creativity with his work experience and logic to improve the workings or the designs of many things. Experiencing first hand his ability to improve on every-thing that arrived on the ranch (from a brand-new Featherlite horse trailer to halters and toilet roll holders) made me wish his fans could realize how much more there was to their Steve Reeves. His face, his physique, his movies and his voice were only a small part of the total man. Add to those attributes, among other things, his expert knowledge of physical training and nutrition. His work ethic was unsurpassed and his determination to improve the Morgan horse breed was tragically interrupted. (Black and White Version)

Download or read book Sandow the Magnificent written by David L. Chapman and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Reeves, or Charles Atlas, there was Eugen Sandow, a muscular vaudeville strongman who used his good looks, intelligence, and business savvy to forge a fitness empire. The German-born Sandow (1867-1925) established a worldwide string of gyms, published a popular magazine, sold exercise equipment, and pioneered the use of food supplements. He even marketed a patented health corset for his female followers. Among the colorful figures who played a part in Sandow's life are Bernarr Macfadden, Florenz Ziegfeld, Lillian Russell, and others in sports and the theater. Sandow the Magnificent is the story of this first showman to emphasize physique display rather than lifting prowess. Sandow's is also the story of the earliest days of the fitness movement, and Chapman explains the popularity of physical culture in terms of its wider social implications. Sandow was a proponent of exercise to alleviate physical ailments, anticipating the field of physical therapy. By making exercise fashionable, he encouraged the fitness craze that still endures. As the first superstar in his field, Sandow also pried open some surprising cracks in the Victorian wall of prudery. His nude photographs, a kind of soft-core pornography, were anxiously sought by both male and female admirers, and after many of his major public events he gave private "receptions" wearing little more than a G-string.

Download or read book American Hunks written by David L. Chapman and published by arsenal pulp press. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "American hunk" is a cultural icon: the image of the chiseled, well-built male body has been promoted and exploited for commercial use for over 125 years, whether in movies, magazines, advertisements, or on consumer products, not only in America but throughout the world. American Hunks is a fascinating collection of images (many in full color) depicting the muscular American male as documented in popular culture from 1860 to 1970. The book, divided into specific historic eras, includes such personalities as bodybuilder Charles Atlas; pioneer weightlifter Eugene Sandow; movie stars like Steve "Hercules" Reeves and Johnny "Tarzan" Weismuller; and publications such as the 1920s-era magazine Physical Culture and the 1950s-era comic book Mr. Muscles. It also touches on the use of masculine, homoerotic imagery to sell political and military might (including American recruitment posters and Nazi propaganda from the 1936 Olympics), and how companies have used buff, near-naked men to sell products from laundry detergent to sacks of flour since the 1920s. The introduction by David L. Chapman offers insightful information on individual images, while the essay by Brett Josef Grubisic places the work in its proper historical context. David L. Chapman has written many books on male photography and bodybuilding, including Comin' at Ya!: The Homoerotic 3-D Photographs of Denny Denfield. Brett Josef Grubisic is author of the novel The Age of Cities and editor of Contra/Diction: New Queer Fiction.

Download or read book Mr America written by John D. Fair and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Map[s] the shifting definitions of gender and masculinity . . . provides the rare insight into the world of bodybuilding that only an insider could offer.” —Sport in American History For most of the twentieth century, the “Mr. America” image epitomized muscular manhood. From humble beginnings in 1939 at a small gym in Schenectady, New York, the Mr. America Contest became the world’s premier bodybuilding event over the next thirty years. Rooted in ancient Greek virtues of health, fitness, beauty, and athleticism, it showcased some of the finest specimens of American masculinity. Interviewing nearly one hundred major figures in the physical culture movement (including twenty-five Mr. Americas) and incorporating copious printed and manuscript sources, John D. Fair has created the definitive study of this iconic phenomenon. Revealing the ways in which the contest provided a model of functional and fit manhood, Mr. America captures the event’s path to idealism and its slow descent into obscurity. As the 1960s marked a turbulent transition in American society—from the civil rights movement to the rise of feminism and increasing acceptance of homosexuality—Mr. America changed as well. Exploring the influence of other bodily displays, such as the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia contests and the Miss America Pageant, Fair focuses on commercialism, size obsession, and drugs that corrupted the competition’s original intent. Accessible and engaging, Mr. America is a compelling portrayal of the glory days of American muscle. “An entertaining narrative of the bodybuilding subculture in America.” —Kirkus Reviews “Deftly written and superbly researched.” —Journal of Sport History
