Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steps of Progress in Michigan Forestry There is a growing conviction among the people who have been most thoughtful about the future of our State, that the method which has been pursued of inducing people to go on poor lands simply because they are cheap, is a mistaken one as a matter of State policy, and an injustice to immigrants. A wiser plan would be for the State to cover the thin lands with a forest growth that shall be of permanent benefit to contiguous agricultural lands, and aid in every way the farmer to a more intensive method of farming the better lands. In the course of another year the Commission will probably be able to obtain a wider array of facts and figures to establish its contention that this is the locality for a large and permanent State forestry preserve. In connection with this main idea, the Commission has had called to its attention in various ways the desirability of utilizing the same region as a game pre serve, for the purpose of perpetuating within our borders the more useful of our animals which made their home in our peninsula under the primitive conditions of our State. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Advance Movement in Michigan Forestry For some years the friends of the forestry movement in Michigan have had in mind the organization of a body of people who should utilize the Association in the interests of reforestation in Michigan along the same lines of work which have been accomplished in the State by the Horticultural Society and which have resulted in developing such a tremendous commercial and amateur interest in horticultural progress. The work of the State Horticultural Society had led up to this by inserting forestry subjects into its programs from time to time, and even giving up whole sessions of its conventions to forests and forest management. It remained for Mr. Thornton A. Green, of Ontonagon, Michigan, to actually initiate the movement which led to the formation of the Michigan Forestry Association, on the 29th and 30th of September, 1905. Mr. Green, through correspondence, acting as provisional secretary, had canvassed the State for membership and secured something over 300 members upon which the society should found its structural work. The first thought was to hold the initial meeting at Mackinac Island, so as to be convenient to both Peninsulas. It subsequently developed, however, that so large a portion of the membership was in and about Grand Rapids, and the season of the year at a time when it might be difficult to secure a large attendance from outside the immediate locality in which the meeting should be held, that Mr. Green and his associates decided it was best to launch the organization at Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mr. Chas. W. Garfield made local arrangements for holding the day part of the meeting in Park Congregational Church; and upon invitation of the Grand Rapids Board of Library Commissioners, the evening session was held in Ryerson Library. Prof. Filibert Roth, of Ann Arbor arranged the details of the provisional program, and it was printed and sent out over the State. A literary bureau was opened at Grand Rapids previous to the meeting, and circulars and letters were sent out in large numbers, the Grand Rapids newspapers taking hearty interest in the undertaking and devoting a good deal of space in their columns to the work of advertising the convention. The Michigan Tradesman which has a large circulation in the State, published for several weeks previous to the Convention articles upon the subjects which would naturally come before the Convention, which were prepared by Prof. Roth and Mr. Garfield. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Michigan-Forestry Commission: For the Years 1907-1908 We have successfully maintained that it is a proper function of the State to own a permanent forest domain upon which shall forever be protected a permanent forest cover. While the Commission has not, from limitation of funds, accomplished very much in practical for estry, it has strengthened the argument for State forestry in its con duct of a small area devoted to growing State forests by protecting it from the devastation of fire in an economical manner; it has demon strated that on abandoned lands, which after years of experience the State could not dispose of, it can grow timber, and through the salvage of what would otherwise be worse than waste because food for fire, the Commission has furnished an object lesson, better than any carefully studied argument, in favor of utilizing the waste lands of the State for the development of a permanent forest cover. Even in the meager results from actual planting in the open, the Commission has also demonstrated something of the possibilities of con ducting forestry on waste lands by. Growing nursery stock and plant ing in the field. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book First Annual Report of the Michigan Forestry Commission written by Michigan Forestry Commission and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Annual Report of the Michigan Forestry Commission: For the Year 1900 The Michigan Forestry Commission, in acting under the provisions of the statute which provides for its organization, has met with many serious difficulties, the principal one being the lack of authority to secure statistical matter upon which to base propositions looking to the solution of the forestry problem of the State. It has opened a wide range of correspondence, and upon the material thus gathered, together with observations in certain parts of the State and investigations con ducted through the Land Office, it has based the proposed legislation which will accompany this report. The Commission believes that its powers should be widened, its meth ods of work should be supported by the ability to pay for active assist ance in carrying out a broad policy, and that the foundation of this policy should lie first in a statute of limitations which will forever quiet the title to an immense area of land peculiarly adapted to the purpose of reforestation; second, in effective fire and trespass laws; and third, in an intelligent prosecution of a policy that will be thor oughly business-like in its management. Feeling that the members of the Legislature would like, as far as possible, to have the same data placed before them which has influenced the Commission in its recommendations, we have, in addition to the official report made to the Governor by the Commission, added brief papers upon the various phases of the forestry question in Michigan by men of broad experience and well-grounded views. These men have been of inestimable assistance in shaping the ideas of the members of the Commission with reference to the obligation of the State as connected with our forestry problem. The members of the Commission have found on every hand interested men and women who have very clear conceptions of the importance of the forestry problem; and here and there we have found people who have given sufficient thought to the matter to make wise and far-reach ing suggestions.
