Book Stepping Stones

Download or read book Stepping Stones written by Marilea C. Rabasa and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addiction is a stealth predator. Unrecognized, it will grow and flourish. Unchecked, it destroys. Marilea Rabasa grew up in post-WWII Massachusetts in a family that lived comfortably and offered her every advantage. But they were also haunted by closely guarded family secrets. Alcoholism reached back through several generations, and it was not openly discussed. Shame and stigma perpetuated the silence. And Marilea became part of this ongoing tragedy. From an unhappy childhood to a life overseas in the diplomatic service to now, living on an island in Puget Sound, Stepping Stones chronicles Marilea’s experiences, weaving a compelling tale of travel, motherhood, addiction, and heartbreaking loss. The constant thread throughout this story is the many faces and forms of addiction, phantoms that stalk her like an obsessed lover. What, if anything, will free her of the masks she has worn all her life? An inspiring, poignant recovery story, Stepping Stones tells how Marilea took on the demons that plagued her all her life—and defeated them.

Book excerpt: Many people know more about the planets Venus and Mars than they do about our home planet, Earth. Unique in our solar system, and so far as we know in the Universe itself, the Earth has been evolving for the past five billion years, and is the result of the dynamic interplay of astronomical, physical, and chemical forces ranging from the vast to the barely perceptible. The evolution of the Earth has never been predictable. Life has come very close to being extinguished many times. After each such crisis, the survivors and their genes have diversified and grown in number to exploit allopportunities. Without such traumas it is hardly likely that evolution's pace could have reached its present advanced level; that of conscious life capable of changing the world, contemplating it, and in doing so changing itself at geologically stupendous rates. In Stepping Stones, Stephen Druryexplores how such a seemingly fragile world could have been formed and developed. Looking at the astonishing leaps, and near catastrophes that have occurred along the way, intermingled with inexorable but slow change, the book interweaves the evidence from geology, physics, biology, and chemistry,to tell an extraordinary story of the Earth's evolution spanning nearly five billion years.

Tony wanted to help clients ensure that they wouldn’t outlive their money—and possibly even have enough saved to accomplish their bucket-list goals. However, after several years of running a numbers-first business and serving his clients well in their financial lives, a family crisis changed his thinking. Tony’s mother retired from her job as the director of a hospice agency, and she quickly fell into a deep depression as she lost her purpose and fulfillment derived from a lifelong career she had been passionate about. On March 22, 2011, Tony’s mother tragically took her own life. After this life-changing tragedy, Tony made it his goal to help pre-retirees not repeat the mistakes his mom made as she transitioned from her career into retirement. Book Stumbling Blocks and Stepping Stones

Download or read book Stumbling Blocks and Stepping Stones written by Duane E. Jennings and published by . This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stumbling Blocks and Stepping-Stones is a two-volume publication which vigorously examines Mormonism's long struggle with those it has traditionally deemed as sexually and gender transgressive -- its LGBTI members. It emboldens Latter-day Saints and fellow Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex, believing or disaffected, to dialogue with one another and consider the very real possibility of their full acceptance within the beloved faith community. It makes five enormous contributions: (1)It analyzes the "clobber scriptures" -- those most frequently used to end conversations on the topic -- drawing on a broad spectrum of Jewish, Christian, and academic scholars. The book provides connatural context and reasonable interpretations that broaden the discussion beyond "because God said so."(2)It provides a stimulating overview of scientific research on homosexuality in nature (severely undercutting the "homosexuality isn't natural" argument), what's currently known about the causes/influence on homosexuality, and the history of homophobia that has brought us to our current position. (3)It argues, persuasively, in my opinion, for ways in which the gospel can and does (and the church could and should) include lgbti members in full fellowship. (4)The longest section--part 4--provides a history of interactions between the church and its lgbti members. Because of my love for history, this is my favorite section, even though a lot of it seems like "baby step forward, giant step backwards," especially now. (5)The tone models a combination of compassion, serious scholarship, and firmly founded discipleship that should be elements that govern how the dialogue can and should be conducted.

Book excerpt: In the spiritual successor to the best-selling Touchstones, the author continues to explore masculinity and sobriety. Now well beyond recovery’s trailhead, we confront life itself: it isn’t merely abstinence and coping skills, it’s a triumph. Stepping Stones guides your self-help discovery along its next steps, ensuring your recovery finds inspiration, meaning, and brilliance. For many of us, sobriety began uncomfortably. Treatment and counseling unearthed addiction’s thumbprint—substance use, anger, resentments, and behavioral patterns around sex and intimacy—as well as challenged perspectives about religion and spirituality. As addictive behaviors and mind-sets gave way to both mental health and physical wellness, our new sense of self emerged, and our family and friends supported our continuing transformation. This self-help meditation book is designed for men to keep moving forward in recovery. Recovery is well-earned, but life never slows—nor should it. Stepping Stones advances a person’s recovery so that it emerges as a comfortable journey that stays in stride with a person’s overall life and experiences. It offers insight into the many masculine roles men undertake—father and son, friend and lover—and provides actionable meditations for leading a full life. Life isn’t about recovery; recovery is about life.

Book Stepping Stones

  • Author : Olive Margaret Roberts

  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Stepping Stones written by Olive Margaret Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olive Roberts's story, interspersed extracts from her husband Ron's account of his war years and subsequent work for GCHQ, is a warm-hearted and personal account of a very interesting life. Throughout, her resilience and optimism shine through, even as she moves away from her beloved North East to explore the exotic shores of Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Mediterranean. Her account is humorous and knowledgeable, casting light on the constraints of the 1930s, the fear and exhilaration of the war years and, eventually, the chance to see the world and become immersed in cultures that a person of her background would otherwise have little access to. Olive's story is a remarkable one. Beginning in the North East of England in the late 1920s, her life encompassed the aftermath of the First World War, the upheavals of World War Two and the unexpected post-war opportunity to travel and see the world. Born in Morpeth, Northumberland, in March 1928. An older brother died in early childhood. Her parents had suffered the hardships of a working-class upbringing but at the time of her birth were happy and settled into family life. This was all to change with the death of her father, who died in 1934 of TB, the result of a chest weakened by a gas attack during World War One. Her mother married again, but after just two years she died while giving birth to twins. These children were adopted and Olive was left as an orphan. Soon after this tragedy her grandparents stepped in and raised her in East Bolden, Co. Durham. They were old-fashioned and strict, but had her best interests at heart and there was a large family around to mitigate some of their rules and regulations. Olive was clever and went to a school for bright but poor children in Sunderland. During this time war with Germany was declared and she recalls the full force of the Blitz on Sunderland and Newcastle. However, amidst the fear there was much excitement too! Olive left school and went to work at a firm of solicitors' in Sunderland, as well as standing in rationing queues for the little luxuries she needed. During the war she met a sailor, Ron, her grandmother did not approve but the pair were reunited at war's end, marrying in the summer of 1949. Ron had been a radio operator during the war and, after several peacetime jobs, was recruited by the government to work with the fledgling GCHQ. Three sons arrived in quick succession as they moved around the UK before finally making the journey abroad, to Singapore, where Ron worked to protect Britain's interests in the Far East. For the entire family, a life of real adventure would begin at this point. Olive's account of settling into a completely new country, with three small boys in tow, is both illuminating and hilarious. Subsequent secondments to Hong Kong (where Olive worked for the British Army's top brass) and Cyprus are equally insightful. After many years abroad, Olive and Ron moved home permanently. Ron retired from GCHQ and they moved to Gloucestershire to be near two of their sons. However, Olive and Ron developed similar macular degeneration problems with their eyes and, after discovering that the NHS would not fund the treatment they needed, became dedicated campaigners for a change in the rules. Their efforts paid off, and now people suffering from the same condition are funded by the NHS. However, the victory was bittersweet, because it was during this period that Ron was diagnosed with cancer, passing away in April 2007. Olive now had to learn to live without the man she'd been married to for almost 60 years and, as she says, 'it was either sink or swim. So I swam.' Olive was determined not to get bogged down in grief so she joined various groups and classes, took up painting with relish and got to grips with the internet.
