Book Stepping Out of Darkness Into the Light

Download or read book Stepping Out of Darkness Into the Light written by Edna L. Lester Blue and published by . This book was released on 2021-12-10 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stepping Out of Darkness into the Light is a book of action. The Word of the Lord says, "faith without works is dead" (Jms.2:20,26). This book assists God's people in the appointed time to move out from the comfort zone and into a faith walk where the power of God resides. Whenever there is need for change, there is also resistance to change. This resistance presents evidence of fear. Since fear is the absent of faith, it must be dealt with by any means necessary. The Bible says that without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb.11:6). Therefore, it is pertinent that we be relieved of this fear, whatever the cost. The absolute absence of fear will probably never be accomplished in our human state of being. However, there are some steps that we can take that will alleviate many of the symptoms and allow us to move to the next level in God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Stepping Out of Darkness into the Light ushers the reader into the presence of God beginning with ten chapters of devotional reading. Devotional time spent with God is preparation for the coming events at any given time. The segments that follow, introduce a transitory method utilizing biblical steps that bring the readers into an even more intimate relationship with God. When we are confident about our relationship with God, we are better able to represent Him in our daily walk. The world's need for peace is more prevalent than ever before. While God's people may not be in position to bring peace to the world, we can start with ourselves. Utilizing the steps presented in this book will assist in uncovering the dark places in our lives and stepping into the light, one step at a time.

Book Called Out of Darkness

Download or read book Called Out of Darkness written by Anne Rice and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first memoir from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Interview with a Vampire—a "very affecting story of a well-known prodigal’s return ... [a] vivid, engaging tale of the journey of a soul into light” (Chicago Sun-Times). Anne Rice was raised in New Orleans as the devout child in a deeply religious Irish Catholic family. Here, she describes how, as she grew up, she lost her belief in God, but not her desire for a meaningful life. She used her novels—beginning with Interview with a Vampire—to wrestle with otherworldly themes while in her own life, she experienced both loss (the death of her daughter and, later, her beloved husband, Stan Rice) and joys (the birth of her son, Christopher). And she writes about how, finally, after years of questioning, she experienced the intense conversion and re-embracing of her faith that lie behind her most recent novels about the life of Christ.

Book This Brilliant Darkness A Book of Strangers

Download or read book This Brilliant Darkness A Book of Strangers written by Jeff Sharlet and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A luminous, moving and visual record of fleeting moments of connection.” —New York Times Book Review, Editors’ Choice A visionary work of radical empathy. Known for immersion journalism that is more immersed than most people are willing to go, and for a prose style that is somehow both fierce and soulful, Jeff Sharlet dives deep into the darkness around us and awaiting us. This work began when his father had a heart attack; two years later, Jeff, still in his forties, had a heart attack of his own. In the grip of writerly self-doubt, Jeff turned to images, taking snapshots and posting them on Instagram, writing short, true stories that bloomed into documentary. During those two years, he spent a lot of time on the road: meeting strangers working night shifts as he drove through the mountains to see his father; exploring the life and death of Charley Keunang, a once-aspiring actor shot by the police on LA’s Skid Row; documenting gay pride amidst the violent homophobia of Putin’s Russia; passing time with homeless teen addicts in Dublin; and accompanying a lonely woman, whose only friend was a houseplant, on shopping trips. Early readers have called this book “incantatory,” the voice “prophetic,” in “James Agee’s tradition of looking at the reality of American lives.” Defined by insomnia and late-night driving and the companionship of other darkness-dwellers—night bakers and last-call drinkers, frightened people and frightening people, the homeless, the lost (or merely disoriented), and other people on the margins—This Brilliant Darkness erases the boundaries between author, subject, and reader to ask: how do people live with suffering?

Book Wandering in Darkness

Download or read book Wandering in Darkness written by Eleonore Stump and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only the most naïve or tendentious among us would deny the extent and intensity of suffering in the world. Can one hold, consistently with the common view of suffering in the world, that there is an omniscient, omnipotent, perfectly good God? This book argues that one can. Wandering in Darkness first presents the moral psychology and value theory within which one typical traditional theodicy, namely, that of Thomas Aquinas, is embedded. It explicates Aquinas's account of the good for human beings, including the nature of love and union among persons. Eleonore Stump also makes use of developments in neurobiology and developmental psychology to illuminate the nature of such union. Stump then turns to an examination of narratives. In a methodological section focused on epistemological issues, the book uses recent research involving autism spectrum disorder to argue that some philosophical problems are best considered in the context of narratives. Using the methodology argued for, the book gives detailed, innovative exegeses of the stories of Job, Samson, Abraham and Isaac, and Mary of Bethany. In the context of these stories and against the backdrop of Aquinas's other views, Stump presents Aquinas's own theodicy, and shows that Aquinas's theodicy gives a powerful explanation for God's allowing suffering. She concludes by arguing that this explanation constitutes a consistent and cogent defense for the problem of suffering.
