Book Design and Development of Stepped Frequency Continuous Wave and FIFO Noise Radar Sensors for Tracking Moving Ground Vehicles

Download or read book Design and Development of Stepped Frequency Continuous Wave and FIFO Noise Radar Sensors for Tracking Moving Ground Vehicles written by Teoman Emre Ustun and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The design and development of two different, small, low-cost, low-power radar sensors are presented in this thesis. A stepped frequency continuous wave (SFCW) radar and a first-in-first-out (FIFO) noise radar are designed and implemented to detect and track moving ground vehicles through weedy foliage. This is done with both the target and radar close to the ground. In addition, the operating principles of both radar systems are presented from a mathematical point of view. The target tracking is performed both in range and azimuth. A monopulse technique is used to track targets in azimuth. Each of these radar sensors is implemented using state-of-the-art, surface mount, and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components. The operating band of the SFCW radar is chosen as 3.0 - 3.6 GHz. The design procedure of a new concept radar, called FIFO noise radar is presented in detail. The FIFO noise radar is operated at a center frequency of 3.3 GHz with a bandwidth of 100 MHz. The performance characteristics of both radar sensors are presented. It is shown that the SFCW radar is a feasible radar sensor for tracking moving ground targets in both range and azimuth, because of its high amplitude sensitivity and stability. The range tracking capabilities of the FIFO noise radar sensor are also presented.

Book The Ambiguity Function of the Stepped Frequency Radar

Download or read book The Ambiguity Function of the Stepped Frequency Radar written by Jen-Chih Huang and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High range resolution radar systems have many advantages such as target classification, resolution of multiple target, accurate range profile and detection of low radar cross section (RCS) targets in clutter. High range resolution requires large bandwidths. Stepped frequency waveforms can achieve high range resolution by increasing the effective bandwidth without increasing the instantaneous bandwidth which would increase the hardware requirements including higher analog to digital (AID) sampling rates which are limited by existing technology. Under today's hardware limitations, the stepped frequency waveform becomes very important. This thesis briefly discusses the stepped frequency radar and associated signal processing, it investigates the ambiguity function of the stepped frequency waveform and the stepped frequency radar system. Mathematical expressions of ambiguity functions are derived and the improvement of clutter suppression capability for the stepped frequency radar by rejecting initial pulses is also discussed.

Book OFDM Coupled Compressive Sensing Algorithm for Stepped Frequency Ground Penetrating Radar

Download or read book OFDM Coupled Compressive Sensing Algorithm for Stepped Frequency Ground Penetrating Radar written by Mohamed Metwally and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dating back to as far as 1940, the US road and bridge infrastructure system has garnered quite the status for strategically connecting together half a continent. As monumental as the infrastructure's status, is its rate of deterioration, with the average bridge age coming at a disconcerting 50 years. Aside from visual inspection, a battery of non-destructive tests were developed to conduct structural fault assessment and detect laminations, in order to preemptively take preventive measures. The mainstream commercially favored test is the impulse time domain ground penetrating radar (GPR). An extremely short, high voltage pulse is used to visualize cross-sections of the bridge decks. While effective and it does not disturb traffic flow, impulse radar suffers from major drawbacks. The drawbacks are namely, its limited dynamic range and high cost of system manufacturing. A less prominent yet highly effective system, stepped frequency continuous wave (SFCW) GPR, was developed to address the aforementioned drawbacks. Mostly developed for research centers and academia, SFCW boasts a high dynamic range and low cost of system manufacturing, while producing comparable if not identical results to the impulse counterpart. However, data procurement speed is an inherent problem in SFCW GPR, which seems to keep impulse radar in the lead for production and development. I am proposing a novel approach to elevate SFCW's data acquisition speed and its scanning efficiency altogether. This approach combines an encoding method called orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and an emerging paradigm called compressive sensing (CS). In OFDM, a digital data stream, the transmit signal, is encoded on multiple carrier frequencies. These frequencies are combined in such a way to achieve orthogonality between the carrier frequencies, while mitigating any interference between said frequencies. In CS, a signal can be potentially reconstructed from a few samples below the standardized Nyquist rate. A novel design of the SFCW GPR architecture coupled with the OFDM-CS algorithm is proposed and evaluated using ideal channels and realistically modelled bridge decks.

Book Effect of Phase Errors in Stepped Frequency Radar Systems

Download or read book Effect of Phase Errors in Stepped Frequency Radar Systems written by H. E. VanBrundt and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stepped-frequency waveforms are being considered for inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging from ship and airborne platforms and for detailed radar cross section (RCS) measurements of ships and aircraft. These waveforms make it possible to achieve resolutions of 1.0 foot by using existing radar designs and processing technology. One problem not yet fully resolved in using stepped-frequency waveform for ISAR imaging is the deterioration in signal level caused by random frequency error. Random frequency error of the stepped-frequency source results in reduced peak responses and increased null responses. The resulting reduced signal-to-noise ratio is range dependent. Two of the major concerns addressed in this report are radar range limitations for ISAR and the error in calibration for RCS measurements caused by differences in range between a passive reflector used for an RCS reference and the target to be measured. In addressing these concerns, NOSC developed an analysis to assess the tolerable frequency error in terms of resulting power loss in signal power and signal-to-phase noise.

Book Radar Sensor Networks

Download or read book Radar Sensor Networks written by Lei Xu and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we have studied totally eight topics which are focused on but not limited to radar sensor networks (RSN) from a signal processing perspective. We propose the definitions of ZCZ/LCZ (Zero Correlation Zone/Low Correlation Zone) sequence-pair sets, provided three methods to construct optimized optimized punctured LCZ/ZCZ sequence-pair sets and study their properties in chapter 2 and 3. We further investigate the waveform design problem for radar system, radar sensor network, sonar sensor network and MIMO radar system from chapter 4 to chapter 7. In addition, we study radar sensor network from the view of information theory in chapter 8. We also study compressive sensing and apply it to RSN to further investigate the system performance in chapter 9 and chapter 10. In chapter 11, we briefly conclude our work in this dissertation. The main innovation works of this dissertation are as following. We propose the LCZ/ZCZ Sequence-pair Sets that have ideal autocorrelation sidelobes and cross correlation values during LCZ/ZCZ. We also provide three methods to construct the Optimized Punctured LCZ/ZCZ Sequence-pair Sets which is a specific case of the LCZ/ZCZ Sequence-pair Sets. We not only theoretically prove that the sequence-pair sets constructed by our methods satisfy the definitions of the Optimized Punctured LCZ/ZCZ Sequence-pair sets, but also provide examples for each method and analyze properties of the Optimized Punctured LCZ/ZCZ Sequence-pair sets to help further investigating our proposed codes. The main purpose of pulse compression is to raise the signal to maximum sidelobe (signal-to-sidelobe) ratio to improve the target detection and range resolution abilities of the system. We apply the Optimized Punctured Binary Sequence-pair to the Radar system as the phase coded waveforms which is a kind of pulse compression codes. Comparing with the Barker and P4 codes of corresponding length, the Radar system within the Optimized Punctured Binary Sequence-pair could clearly improve the detection performances. Since multiple radar sensors can be combined to form a multi radar system to overcome performance degradation of single radar along with waveform optimization, we theoretically study RSN design using phase coded waveforms. We apply our newly proposed codes to RSN and analyze the detection performance of the system. We also apply the proposed ternary codes to the Sonar Sensor Network (SSN) as pulse compression codes for narrowband pulse signals and simulate the target detection performance of the system. We provide two MIMO radar systems using our proposed codes as orthogonal pulse compression codes to study the direction finding performance of the MIMO radar systems. We theoretically analyze the two MIMO radar system models and simulate the direction finding performance of the system. We also studied the RSN from the view of information theory. We investigate the use of information theory to design waveforms for the measurement of extended radar targets in RSN. We optimized the estimation waveforms that maximize the mutual information between a target ensemble and the received signal within additive Gaussian noise so that characteristics of the target could be well recognized. Finally, we provide and analyze a CS-SVD method to simplify the signal recovery algorithm and introduce CS to RSN using pulse compression technique. Our idea is to employ a set of Stepped-Frequency (SF) waveforms as pulse compression codes for transmit sensors, and to use the same SF waveforms as the sparse matrix to compress the signal in the receiving sensor. We obtain that the signal samples along the time domain could be largely compressed so that they could be perfectly recovered by a small number of measurements. We develop a Maximum Likelihood (ML) Algorithm for Radar Cross Section (RCS) parameter estimation and provide the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) to validate the theoretical result.

Book Velocity Compensation in Stepped Frequency Radar

Download or read book Velocity Compensation in Stepped Frequency Radar written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As compared to the commonly used constant frequency radar waveforms, the stepped-frequency waveform can achieve high range resolution while still retaining the advantages of lower instantaneous receiver bandwidth and lower analog-to-digital sampling rate. However, the relative radial motion between the target and the stepped-frequency radar will result in performance degradations, such as range error, loss in signal-to-noise ratio, and degraded range resolution. The solution to this problem is to apply velocity compensation to the received signal, which can eliminate the degradations due to Doppler effects. Three velocity compensation schemes for the detection of a moving target in clutter are designed, discussed, and compared in this thesis. Also, a simulation is presented to verify the concepts, and simulation results are compared and discussed. (AN).

Book Stepped Frequency Ground Penetrating Radar

Download or read book Stepped Frequency Ground Penetrating Radar written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stepped frequency ground penetrating radar system is described comprising an RF signal generating section capable of producing stepped frequency signals in spaced and equal increments of time and frequency over a preselected bandwidth which serves as a common RF signal source for both a transmit portion and a receive portion of the system. In the transmit portion of the system the signal is processed into in-phase and quadrature signals which are then amplified and then transmitted toward a target. The reflected signals from the target are then received by a receive antenna and mixed with a reference signal from the common RF signal source in a mixer whose output is then fed through a low pass filter. The DC output, after amplification and demodulation, is digitized and converted into a frequency domain signal by a Fast Fourier Transform. A plot of the frequency domain signals from all of the stepped frequencies broadcast toward and received from the target yields information concerning the range (distance) and cross section (size) of the target.
