Book excerpt: Excerpt from Step by Step, the Governance of Empire The essay which follows is based on the essay which won the prize of one hundred guineas offered through the "Standard of Empire" by a patriotic and public-spirited correspondent for the best short essay (3,000 words) on "The Governance of Empire." That competition closed September 1st, 1909, the announcement being made March 11th, 1910. "Essays were sent in from British subjects living in practically every country in the world, a circumstance which affords eloquent testimony to the widespread and patriotic interest taken in the subject of the competition, and incidentally may be regarded as a gratifying indication of the wide area over which the Empire newspaper travels." Firstly, as a colonial, my desire is to present a colonial view of the imperial idea, and, secondly, to endeavour to arouse among my countrymen, in the United Kingdom especially, a greater interest and pride in the Empire beyond the seas. My critics may point to the number of able works bearing directly or indirectly upon the British Empire which have been published within recent years, and it may even be said that I am repeating an oft-told tale, that many of the suggestions which I now put forward, with all due deference to these self-same critics, have been made before. My reply is, The thing that hath been, is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun (eccles. I. Book A New Government for the British Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New Government for the British Empire Classic Reprint written by F. W. Bussell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Government for the British Empire The first enquiry must ask, what is the nature of the State, -its origin in a narrow kindred circle, its extension by kingship, slavery, or conquest, and the accidental and artificial character of most of the con geries called Nations' to-day? The body politic is treated in the light of various analogies, which seem to help us to understand its aim and purpose; as family, flock, army, organism, benefit or mutual aid' society. Attention will be drawn to the fact that modern nations are the creatures of Royalty, and rest on tacit or explicit covenants between rulers and ruled - a contract visible enough, even in the earliest days, between government or ruling class (nearly always alien and invading), and a subject race. This is true in our own time, when the State appears in the light of a joint-stock corporation for common life and mutual profit, with a shifting board of directors chosen by the Shareholders. Here, the con tract is explicit, and its secular and utilitarian motive conspicuous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Government of the British Empire Classic Reprint written by Edward Jenks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the British Empire IT is, perhaps, needless to say, that this book is not in tended to compete with the standard works on the Consti tution which have been produced by eminent writers, such as the late Sir William Anson, the late Bishop Stubbs, or Professor Dicey, happily still with us. Still less does it claim to rival the classical monographs on the various aspects of the Constitution which are the work of experts in the strict sense. It is written only in the hope that those who have not yet the leisure, or who have not. Yet arrived at the age, to appreciate these larger works, will be enabled by it to look forward to that advantage at a later date. And the immedi ate prospect of a largely increased electorate, combined with the great stimulus of interest in problems Of government pro duced by the war, would seem to make that hope reasonable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Empire on the Anvil: Being Suggestions and Data for the Future Government of the British Empire By the masses, but gathering strength with improved intercommunications and the growing recognition of essential mutual interests. The military assis tance, freely offered in the Sudan in 1885 and in South Africa in 1899 - 1902, supplied an object lesson alike of the strong sentiment of our fellow subjects overseas and of their military spirit, which powerfully appealed to the public imagination. Thus, in the years before the bursting of the storm, forces have come into play which have worked in the direction of closer political interchange and of tentative organisation for defence. Other forces of local origin have brought about the federation of two important groups of contiguous Colonies and may have helped to disseminate the federal idea. Book An Analysis of the System of Government Throughout the British Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Analysis of the System of Government Throughout the British Empire Classic Reprint written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Analysis of the System of Government Throughout the British Empire It has been estimated that the Empire of Rome at the height of its power covered 1,600,000 square miles of territory and was acknowledged by about 85 millions of subjects. King George V. reigns to-day over 11,400,000 square miles of territory and over a population of 410 millions. The British Empire therefore surpasses the Empire of Rome - the only true Imperial precedent - by a margin infinitely greater than that which separated Rome from the Eastern dominations which preceded it. It far surpasses in extent, in wealth and populousness any which Napoleon saw in his dreams under the Egyptian stars. It differs moreover from every Empire which has dominated the world in the fact that its territory is not continuous, or even relatively continuous. Its ramifications embrace every continent, its interests are paramount on every sea. The expanse of its territory is matched only by the complexity of its organisation - a complexity which is amply demonstrated in the succeeding pages. This complexity is not entirely due to the haphazard manner in which the Imperial power has been built up, now by the fortune of war or the exigencies of strategy, now by the need for securing order in outlying territories, now by the natural expansion of a virile people. It is due at least as much to the fact that the constitution, or rather the constitutions, of the Empire reflect every dominant phase of the British genius. Book The Path of Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Path of Empire Classic Reprint written by George Lynch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Path of Empire The peopling of Siberia will be done otherwise. At present there is an annual surplus in the Russian birth rate Of I, 61 3, 000. The population of Russia doubles In sixty years, so that about the middle of this century there will be more Russians on the earth than at the time of the last census in 1897. There is much Similarity to the Russian plan Of peaceful campaign, in the motives which have prompted the Japanese to build the railway from Fusan to Seoul, and much of the same results that it has effected, may be seen being effected there. The railway lines which are opening up China are no less interesting. I would be the last to advocate a policy of territorial aggression in the East - we want to do business there, not to acquire terri tory, or to have the burden Of government upon us. It is in the direction of Opening up the country to trade that all Our efforts should be concentrated, and the work of our diplomatists ought to be directed more than they are, to furthering our commercial interests. If China were con vinced that the Powers wanted no more territory, she would be the more inclined to open her doors for trade. With regard to the three provinces of China, comprising Manchuria, which Russia has now practically annexed, if it is not now too late, the strongest diplomatic pressure, ought to be brought to bear to insist on this immense and rich territory, the importance Of whose resources we do not fully realise, being thrown Open to the trade of the world. When Russia is being allowed to break her solemn promise to evacuate it, such a condition is the least compensation that might be looked for.
